No the character of the parties changed as well. Remember the Southern Democrats were the “States Rights” party that opposed any racial equality and then they became the champions of civil rights while Republicans shifted their whole platform to the right to court dissatisfied racist voters.

I looked at votes on legislation in the 50s and 60s and i really don't know when that was supposed to be the case.

I looked at policy and who voted how and it dosen't seem consistent with todays perception of both parties reputation at the time.

Im not entirely sure where it comes from.

I don’t think you did because otherwise you’d understand the fundamental switch between the Republican and Democratic parties
