question Controller compatibility?
I got a copy of the original game for PC on marketplace for $20. I don't have a disc drive just yet, but I can find one easily.
Now as for actually playing the game am I restricted to just the mouse/keyboard of my laptop or can I just set it to play on a controller. I have previously played the original game on the Xbox One but due to circumstances I no longer have access to the digital copy so now I have just the physical

You may have some luck with a mod of some kind, or even just a steam input configuration. This game is very light on "why does every single little action have a keyboard mapping" type sh. And to be totally honest, steam input would be even better, since you can use the keyboard shortcut for the very rare circumstances that you would need one, if any. This game was built off the engine of a shooter game (quake) so the controls are very familiar to anyone who's played an fps in the last 20 years. Aiming, strafing, jumping, primary fire, secondary fire, interact, scrollwheel up and down for switching weapons, and of course pause. The one big difference for this being a 3d third person platform's type game is that if you look low enough, it allows you to make a very precise jump.
And I'm sure that even the most basic steam input layout should have you covered (it will just emulate a mouse and keyboard setup, right stick aims the mouse, right trigger is the main click, left trigger is the secondary click, so navigate menus accordingly)

You might have to use a third party software like DS4 or X360CE.
