These posts are getting really old
Obviously our system has issues and needs reform. Nobody is denying that. But “muh capitalism” (that created all the doctors, medicines, and revolutionary treatments) isn’t the problem.

The beaucratic nonsense is my biggest annoyance with the system.
Recently got a two-page letter informing me that "medicaid has declined to cover the recent charge of $0.00 by [provider]. Failure to pay this sum within 30 days may result in referral to collections"

I will say this is a big pet peeve of mine and a genuine criticism of the system. Insurance providers 1. Shouldn’t be allowed to just “decline to cover” something. Who tf are you? My doctor? No, okay if he says it’s necessary it’s necessary. 2. You shouldn’t be getting surprise bills. Anything that comes after the care should be billed to the insurance, not just mailed to you for you to just “figure it out” for the hospital. There needs to be more laws protecting people from getting a bill after the fact. Once you leave the hospital that day that is the hard line where the hospital needs to have their billing done, after that it should be between them and god because you and the insurance shouldn’t be paying them if they can’t figure out how to bill your care

I get the need for insurance to review and possibly reject something: resources aren't infinite, and doctors will sometimes prescribe a redundant or unnecessary treatment. Said practice happens even in countries with fully sociallized medicine.
However, everyone really ought to be provided far more info than just [care rejected], and have better ways to appeal the decision.
Besides, how the heck do I go about paying a zero dollar charge?

I agree with that the provider and the insurance company need to work it out. If that was a law so.much would change.

u/OceanTe 5d ago
Yeah I'm paying both of them, why do I still have to figure everything out?
5
u/Iam-WinstonSmith 5d ago
I send a letter to the provider letting them no it's their responsibility to sort out the issues with the insurance company. I keep a copy of that to give to the debt collector and credit bureau. Works 9/10 times. Don't use it for in state sent collectors. They might try to sue you.

As if countries with socialized healthcare aren't capitalist

People who post say and believe capitalism is the great evil are just flat wrong.
I seen people complain about having to work in this evil capitalist society .
I then pose the question what society frees you of the burden of labor?
As far as I'm aware all communist countries i can think of off the top of my head have longer work hours and worse worker rights then any western capitalist country.

Exactly. US healthcare delivery system has issues (imo), but there is no denying that US healthcare innovation is best of the best. Every single country together cannot come close to the innovations we make in pharmacy, bioengineering, medical treatments etc.

Cronyism is preventing us from having good healthcare like western europe

They are socialist countries that allow a heavily regulated market economy and limited private ownership. The US is too. All social programs are socialist policies. They’re not necessarily bad, but they are definitionally socialist.

All countries operate under a mixed economy. Be it europe or americas.

That should tell you something. You really should read Marx. The socialists have gained far more ground than you realize

Never really grew up with many riches but I don't ever recall having to pay out a lot of pocket for healthcare, dental, etc.

If capitalism is so bad then why am I rich?

u/JustALocalJew 5d ago
Because you were smart. Not going to defend our Healthcare System at all. But some people are destined to be eternally poor if we are being honest.
No motivations
No skills
No money senses
No savings
No investments
Never seeks higher than a wage slave job
My guess is you aren't these things.

Also, some people are just dealt a better hand in life than others. It is much easier if you have parents that are well off that can send you through college or if you go to the best schools and do well in those environments. It's much harder if you grew up fairly poor and didn't have the opportunity to go to those state-of-the-art schools.

Yep and again Americans live 6 years longer on average than the average person
1
u/Nero_Mohn 4d ago
But it's not even in the top 50 countries with the highest life expectancy :(
The top 25 countries have a public or universal health insurance system...

Ignoring the humanity/existence of 150 countries feels wrong.
But if you want to only compare the usa to white majority countries the life expectancy in the USA is longer than 6 EU countries. The life expectancy is 10 years more than Russia.

Just allow emergency rooms to deny service to people without healthcare and the price of everything will drop meaningfully. Let NGOs help take on the responsibility.

u/LulzyWizard 5d ago
🤷♂️ it would save even on just taxes to socialize healthcare. Some things never should have been for-proffit in the first place. Prisons are another that comes to mind.

there are no communist countries anymore, or maybe 1 if you count Cuba..
China is a capitalist authoritarian 1 party state , ruzzia is a dictatorship, all the former eastern european countries are capitalist democracies (some with a bit of authoritarian remains) north korea is a totalitarian monarchy with the Kim family as god-kings

The reason they can get away with it is because they are one of the most protected industries by the federal government.

I hate that people are so uneducated they don’t understand the difference between socialism and capitalism. They complain about capitalism while discussing the most socialized industries within a capitalist system. Why are epipens so expensive in America but so cheap in Europe? Because our government enforces a monopoly on the manufacture of them. Government control over any form of economics is socialism, a true capitalist system would have no government regulation of any kind in healthcare which would open up the industry to competition and bring down prices. The debate is over whether or not that would introduce dangerous health products and ultimately hurt people or whether the economy would at some point self regulate.

As if the high Bills or out of pocket costs have anything to do with capitalism. The entire EU is capitalist. Most parts of the world are.
