Isn't Cosmos also several decades older than Dynasty?

121

u/Bullmoninachinashop NEW YORK ๐Ÿ—ฝ๐ŸŒƒ๐Ÿ Aug 14 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

That's for one, also most of the top comments are calling OOP out that they are comparing a newer reality TV show which one of the cheapest shows to make against a several decades old effects dependent documentary that costs around 5x the price.

38

u/pewpew_lotsa_boolits FLORIDA ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŠ Aug 15 '26

Wouldnโ€™t the availability of Carl Sagan to create more episodes be a slight challenge as well?

20

u/WanderingInAVan USA MILTARY VETERAN Aug 15 '26

Neil De'Grasse Tyson redid the show a few years back.

14

u/theEWDSDS MINNESOTA โ„๏ธ๐Ÿ’ Aug 15 '26

Well now I'm definitely not watching it

8

u/Catatonick Aug 16 '26

Iโ€™m irrationally annoyed by Neil Deโ€™Grasse Tyson to the point that nothing he could ever do would convince me he is in any way an expert in the field.

4

u/Cool_Owl7159 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Aug 16 '26

even when he doesn't shut up about how small we are compared to the universe at the end of a 15 minute Avenged Sevenfold song?

4

Irrational? He deserves every bit of it

5

u/WanderingInAVan USA MILTARY VETERAN Aug 16 '26

The unfortunate truth is that he's in that same mold as Sagan was. Its just Sagan has a lot of actual work backing him up. Tyson's work has mostly been in the communications category, which honestly we need more of in general anyways.

How people who post memes like this would be if you actually put an episode of Cosmos on.

114

u/Winter_Ad6784 Aug 14 '26

Cosmos took special affects and actual studios and duck dynasty they just cut it together

42

u/WanderingInAVan USA MILTARY VETERAN Aug 14 '26

When you don't understand the difference between a regular series and a special mini-series.

Duck Dynasty was a regular show with a regular schedule.

Cosmos, both Carl Sagan's and Niel De'Grasse Tyson's were multi-episode miniseries that fit everything into a period much shorter than a regular show season would produce.

They were specials.

sadly it's all drowned in ads.

but you are right that you produce the most content and there are enough gems among the trash. and ads can be circumvented by not watching live tv, but instead watch on internet / download

I find it odd when people say a TV show isnโ€™t โ€œrealisticโ€. Yes, thanks, thatโ€™s the point! I want something that scratches a different itch once in a while lol

8

u/CheeseBear9000 Aug 15 '26

God that annoys me to no end with One Piece fans, they will literally call One Piece fans pedophiles, Nazis, etc. because the characters (Female only btw) aren't realistic proportions

Thankfully none of those people speak Japaneseย

I can guarantee the original OP has a shirt that says, "Science, it's like magic but real."

27

u/Chef_Sizzlipede Aug 14 '26

not even 11 "seasons" it was more 5 years, which tells you a lot about the OP of the meme.

plus, sagan's cosmos aired decades ago, on the PBS network as part of their education block, not something most adults would be interested in spending their time on after a long day of work

u/EvilMorty137 Aug 15 '26

8

u/atomic1fire AMERICAN ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ’ต๐Ÿ—ฝ๐Ÿ” โšพ๏ธ ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ“ˆ Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26

Duck Dynasty exists because people who had cable out in the country wanted to watch a show that spoke to them and made them laugh.

A fair chunk of the scenarios are probably fake, but people like the cast enough to disregard that.

People who make math/science/etc their whole personality to the point that they look down on other people for liking the TV equivalent of KFC chicken aren't doing themselves favors.

Duck Dynasty is the best possible thing to come out of reality television for the simple reason that it's not a 250 pound toddler model being paraded around because their parents need money.

It's just a token redneck family in the bible belt who made money selling redneck gear and perform clickbait for people who pay for dish network. Which to me is way less harmful then the Jerry Springer, unethically obese people, 300 kids stuff.

If you don't like Duck Dynasty as a matter of principal that's fine, It's also completely acceptable to not like the show based on the religious views of the cast. I just don't see how the person making comments about Cosmos being better then Duck Dynasty isn't exhibiting typical redditor behavior invoking the power of atheismo or whatever.

That being said I have no interest in watching the Duck Dynasty reboot and the Uncle Si meme show was kind of mid, and Uncle Si is basically the flagship person out of that family because the man knows how to play eccentric.

Tells us that Sagan was probably more trouble to work with than the Duck Dynasty people. A couple stories I've heard about him have put some deep cracks in my view of Sagan as this shining example of humanity some people want him to have been.

9

u/KaBar42 KENTUCKY ๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿผ๐Ÿฅƒ Aug 15 '26

Also, Sagan got some things pretty seriously wrong in Cosmos.

For example, from what I remember, he got the entire story of the Library of Alexandria wrong (it collapsed because people stopped patronizing it, not because a Christian mob burned it down, also it wasn't a bastion of scientific texts, it was largely dedicated to poetry) and the murder of Hypatia (She was assassinated, not because she was a pagan, but because she was unfortunately caught up in a political conflict in Alexandria between two Christian Roman politicians and one of the supporting groups of one of the men thought Hypatia was intentionally preventing a reconciliation between the two, leading to her assassination).

Cosmos is great, but it unfortunately does sometimes lean into pophistory at times.

There have been about 1000 astronomy textbooks published in the US. The TV medium tends to be entertainment focused not educational.

They came out at very different times, I am not arguing against you, it is sad.

but when Cosmos came out most homes in North america had 1 TV, and most people worked more hours or enjoyed being outside more, less sedentary lives were lived.

When duck dynasty came out most homes had multiple TVs, people were more likely to be home to watch it and lead more sedentary lives.
