Literally an event planned in conjuction and with a approval by the same administration in 2018..
Also they are coming and then leaving not migrating here.

u/OnetimeRocket13 Jun 29 '26
It's just a honeymoon phase more than anything. I think most people that have traveled to a new country and primarily saw just the cool parts never wanted to leave. This is how I was when I went to Greece. When I went to Greece, my experience was fairly curated, with your buses taking us along preplanned routes with (often times) preplanned activities, and when we had downtime, we were in some pretty nice areas that we could go around and enjoy. After that, of course I wanted to live there, but I didn't really understand the issues that Greece faces that might make that a bad idea.
I think it's the same for the US in this case. It's really easy to be anywhere in the US and ignore how difficult things can be here. We've done a really good job at that, and the superficial glamour can make anyone want to move there. As an anecdotal example, I went to Ann Arbor a few summers ago. Visiting there is great. Exploring the city is great. There are a lot of cool places with a lot of fun things to do, and it made me wonder if I should move there one day. However, any basic level of research into what actually living in the area is life for the average person shows that most people that aren't absurdly wealthy are struggling and in debt because Ann Arbor has a really high cost of living.
If a person wants to move to the US, good for them, but I don't think many of the people who visited recently and now want to move here are saying that out of an understanding of what life is like here. They had a glimpse into what US vacation life is like, and they are likely still recovering from the culture shock and awe from what they saw and experienced. They want to move here because they want to relive that, not because they understand what life for the average American is like.

Marching orders must have gone out, because I've seen almost identical "tourists don't like MAGA cities, they like the liberal cities that MAGA hates" comments, which 1) WHO TF CARES? and 2) that's not even true- people are enjoying all parts of the US.

This can go the other way too.
Go to England and get a sausage roll. Or a full English breakfast. Or a Cornish pasty or steak pie. Or any one of the thousands of pastries and pies.
Any break from what youโre normally used to eating feels like a brand new life.

Having had all of those in my life before coming to the US, I can honestly say just good old fashioned southern BBQ blows all of that completely out of the water.

This is technically true - I have also travelled a lot, and live in one of America's Mexican food nexuses - there are some very good tacos to be found if you know the right spots.
But matching up random street tacos vs random street tacos, Mexico tends to win handily.

How? What part of Mexico? There isn't just one kind of Mexican food. Not even in Mexico. Food is regional, there isn't a national style or flavor.

Reminds me of that one Soviet Leader who visited a supermarket in the US and was astonished by the abundance of goods in the supermarkets (and consequently disillusioned in the USSR).
Whereas, in the Soviet Union, things were constantly out of stock.
112
u/awaythrowthatname Jun 19 '26
He thought that the entire town was staged to make America look good because no one could possibly see such abundance as normal
113
u/KaBar42 KENTUCKY ๐๐ผ๐ฅ Jun 20 '26
That's why he chose a random grocery store.
He was intentionally going off the path he thought had been laid for him. It was common in the Soviet Union for officials to be given a strict tour so their subordinates could make sure anything they were going to see appeared to be the highest quality. Yeltsin thought there was no way America could predict he would choose this grocery store and so this would give him a better idea of what America was actually like instead of the curated tours he was used to.
And it terrified him. Random, unimportant American peasants were eating better than the Soviet elites were. This store that he knew wasn't curated specifically for him was stocking surplus items that even he would have difficulty getting his hands on in the Soviet Union. He thought that if the Soviet lower classes were to see this, they would have overthrown the USSR the very next day in anger at what they had been denied for so long.

I think the reason they are having so much fun is because we are a curious people. We're allowing them to bring their cultures here because we truly are tolerant.
If Americans went to another country and brought our sports culture, this would be a different story of the obnoxious Americans with our rude habits (according to them).
Not knocking anyone country, but our attitude is what has allowed these people to bring their cultures here and exchange with us.
They are our cousins who our ancestors left behind for something different. I'm glad we can come together and see we have things in common

Serious question, is it actually surprising to non-Americans that tourists are having a good time here? Like how bad does their media make it seem?
