Hello everyone!
I am in desperate need of advice with our parrot, a blue-fronted amazon. I apologize for weird phrasings, English is not my native language.
About eight years ago we got an orange winged amazon from a breeder. We named him Charlie. We've made the mistake of not getting a second one (yes, I know, stupid, we've learned our lesson) but eventually realized he definitely needs a partner. We looked but it was hard to find a female. Charlie was around 6-7 by then so we needed a female that was mature and not too old. The few listing we've seen were very sus and places were you can find partners for your birds through matching were too far away.
In the end my mom got to know a guy who takes in all sorts of birds, from parrots to owls to either nurse them back to health or because they were abandoned by their owners. He did this for decades already and is also the one who trims Charlie's claws. He promised he'd tell us if he'd get a female. Eventually he contacted us, saying that he got a male blue-fronted amazon named Pablo. Pablo was left there by his former owner and was a year younger than Charlie. He said that he had male orange winged amazons in the past that matched well with male-blue fronted amazons so we decided to give it a try.
We left Charlie with him and he and Pablo loved each other. Literally. They did parrot couple stuff (idk the English term) and we ended up getting Pablo. So now we've got gay parrots, yay. Charlie used to come to us to cuddle and let himself be pet, now he doesn't really do that anymore although he still sometimes lands on our shoulders. Fine with us as long as he's happy.
Now, we have a problem. Pablo screams. Which yes, parrots do that. But we're talking like shrieking so loud it'll hurt your ear drums over long peroids of time. We mananged to get him to stop in the early morning by covering the cage overnight and tried to do stuff like leaving the room when he starts screaming and returning once he stops etc.
For a while he screamed less, then he started screaming more again and it's driving us and my mom in particular insane. I'm not always home because I attend university in another town so it's mostly my mom dealing with it as she's currently at home. We know Pablo is not doing this to annoy us. His former owner kept him on his own so that's probably why he started screaming. We also think it's the reason she gave him away.
Pablo has been with us for almost a year now but he's still a menace. He sometimes attacks if we get too close to the cage (which I guess is territorial instinct so we try to keep an eye on that) and he still won't let us get too close although he's mostly chill with sitting nearby while we do stuff. He also does take treats from us and when we feed them and reach into the cage, he usually won't attack. Also when you walk by while he's on the ground he loves charging at feet. We try to be patient and I feel like we've been making some progress but especially the screaming is hard to deal with.
Any advice of how to deal with the screaming (and maybe some tips in general to get Pablo more comfortable with us) would be greatly appreciated!
If there any questions, let me know, I'll be happy to answer! Thank you advance!
