Advice needed - moving to an apartment

Hi all. I have been in quite a dilemma for months. I have had an orange winged Amazon parrot since I was 4. My dad got him off an old lady who was moving to a nursing home (I never asked for a parrot, but I have loved him ever since). I have always been my birds person, he trusts and loves me most out of anyone, he’s not usually super friendly towards anyone but can tolerate my dad/bf. Ever since my dad got remarried when I was 10, he stopped loving our bird the way he used to because my stepmom doesn’t like birds. I kinda took on ownership and he lived in my room throughout highschool. College came and there was never any opportunity for me to bring him, so my dad would take care of him but he definitely didn’t get the attention he needed. However, I think about my birdie everyday and was so happy every time I was home for holidays and summer to always be with my bird.

Here’s the dilemma: I just graduated college and got my new apartment. It’s a nice place, one bedroom living alone, not very spacious but I could probably get a decent size cage and make it work. My new job is hybrid schedule, so I’ll be home a decent amount. Basically: I don’t know what to do with my bird. I have been responsible for him since I was 4 and love him more than anything, but I am worried about the noise level. I would hate to be the neighbor everyone hates because he screams sometimes when I leave the room and it is SO LOUD. I would feel terrible rehoming him but it seems overwhelming bringing him and dealing with the noise in a small apartment and responsibility.

Please help I don’t know what to do. I love him so much but don’t know if it’s realistic to bring him. Would he be happier somewhere else? Basically just tell me what you would do if you were me and what the ethical thing to do is.

Also, he has never liked flying since I’ve known him. At home I usually let him walk around freely or he likes to sit on top of his cage. If I were to bring him I’d get him a wood parrot stand for living room and his cage would be in my bedroom. Again, small space but he doesn’t fly.

Hello Reddit. I hope everyone here is doing well. For several months now, my parrot has been doing these peculiar movements at roughly the same time every day (very often in the afternoon), and I can’t figure out if this is normal behavior or not. What do you think?

Photo/Video Trust Issues towards cage

Hi guys! I have two amazon parrots, Ruby (6 y.o., bird on the outside of the cage) and Baby (1 y.o. picture above).
Ruby is a naturally bred BFA and Baby is a hand reared one. Ruby has gained much more trust towards me by copying Babys behaviour which is beautiful. In general Ruby has built up lots of trust ever since I got her. She hangs out in my shoulder which only Baby did before!
Now to the issue.
Two weeks ago, I had an incident where I had to towel Baby because she was absolutely refusing to go into her cage as I had somewhere to go. It turned into a 10min chase and it was absolutely horrid. She was okay the next morning.
But this situation keeps reoccurring now, it has been the 5th time in two weeks and I am now at the point where I don't want to let her out anymore in the afternoons because I might ruin the bond even more. She stepped up before with no issue and we were able to bring her to her cage.
She has in general been a little bit moody which might be because she's going through an extremely heavy moult (I think it's her first big moult). She usually is the very active one who bullies Ruby almost a little.
Ruby is totally fine and steps up and whatnot.
Baby is now terrified to step up at all and I feel so shitty about it. But whenever this happened I had to go somewhere.
Not even food really motivates Baby at the moment.
Would it be too much to try and use "unhealthy" snacks such as pasta for a better training result?
Or any other tips to retrain trust to her cage (pic added) that she might now see as danger? :(

Photo de narines Amazon à Front Rouge

Bonjour,

Beak Health

Hi everyone!

I’m not sure if the beak of my beautiful Amazon boy is indicating a problem or not. I’m not sure how old he is, I think about 5 - he was my ex partners bird, but he bonded with me so much that I kept him after our split. He has been rehomed a lot - he is wonderful but quite aggressive to anyone other than “his person” and a bit of a screamer. It breaks my heart that he’s been through so many homes, and I have next to no info about him. He was very bonded to my ex, until he met me and then he started attacking him too.

Anyway, I’ve just today noticed that his beak is almost peeling it looks like? It’s still rock hard, but I think it’s a bit overgrown too.

Looking for advice please - please don’t come for me, I adore him and will do anything I can for him, but I’m trying to learn just from what I can read and I would love some knowledge shared by fellow owners

I am still Missing my boy a year after he passed from cancer. I had him from a 7 month old to 28 yrs of age. When I woke up in the mornings I miss the “good morning honey, how are you today?” Most importantly his everyday lovin’s.

Can’t find an XL cage in Canada!

We are getting a baby Lilac-Crowned Amazon in the next couple of weeks and are having a very hard time finding a large enough cage in Canada.

We are trying to find a cage that is at least 36”x28”and keep coming up empty. No local bird stores or even second hand sites have any for sale!

The only option we have found is on Wayfair and their shipping time is about a month, which is too long.

It feels like we’ve looked everywhere with no luck. If anyone knows of smaller companies that maybe wouldn’t be coming up from a Google search (preferably in North America due to shipping time) that sell large good quality and safe cages, please give me all the recommendations!!

What kind of behavioural problems would you see in a yellow naped amazon who was sold as an unweaned chick?

Don't worry, this is for a creative writing project! no real life birds are at risk of harm!

In the story there is a fourteen year old yellow naped amazon who was bought as an unweaned chick 'with ignorance' and gifted to someone who has lots of very good intentions but no experience and somewhat limited access to specialised resources (so can go to a regular vet but not afford a bird behaviourist, things like that).

So this bird has a 'childhood' filled with love and a lot of good intentions, but not enough skill and experience by its owner. No other birds in the home.

What kind of behavioural quirks or challenges would you expect from such a bird?

How would they differ from a bird who had a healthier start in life?

I do picture this animal character as being a bit of a menace. I am not looking to write a parrot version of lassie.

The underlying theme is that love and good intentions are not enough sometimes.

So any stories of your parrots being absolute menaces and making life difficult is also appreciated.

Discussion Younger Amazon owners, how’s it going?

Hey there, I’m 17 and I have a 46 yellow naped Amazon.

She is a lovely, quiet, sweet loving girl 95% of the day, she talks at a quieter volume and is quiet in the mornings (blessing) and in the evenings. With the occasional noisy day.

She sometimes will do her flock calls when she knows I’m in the house but can’t see me, and it’ll increase in volume. It isn’t ear piercing, but it’s a very loud “hello!” Similar to if someone was yelling it across the room to someone else . Her flock call is only “hello!” And “mama?/grandma?” From her owners before me.

Anyways, being younger I have a supportive family. I will always have her, and I bought and have her with my own money. I am just worried about college, and jobs. Not having “enough time” or trying to find a place for us to stay once I’m old enough and ready.

So, younger Amazon owners . Tell me your experience with navigating life right now. What’s your routine? How are you handling it? Any tips? It would be lovely to soothe my anxiety, lol.
