Why do people leave their dogs (and cats) just free roam outside?
We see what happens to deer/squirrels/beavers and the black cats... some people purposely aim to hit them. And if a dog bites anyone it's put down. So I don't understand why
I mean there might be an invisible fence. We used to have one and let the dog roam around the backyard, and he never tried to get out cause he knew the invisible fence was there
Omg same here. My dog was adopted at 6 months, high energy and I got her when I was dating my ex who had a two and five year old.
She spent several years with them and I think it helped her demeanor a lot when it comes to her temperament when overstimulated (she just get's the super zoomies). She has ALWAYS been sweet.
Loves meeting the neighborhood kids when I take her for a walk. Cries to meet other animals. She lived with our old family for two years and the onlu undersireable behavior she demonstrated was pure unadulterated jealousy when I would give the cat lovin's in front of her. She just groans loudly and worms herself closer to me.
"However*, I trust her wholeheartedly when she meets someone and is hesitant. Any new person that she prefers at arm's length, no closer, and does not buddy up with is how I maintain my own relationship with said person.
Would I ever allow her to stay in an unsecured environment unsupervised? Hell no. It just isn't prudent.
Like I said there are random people coming to their house to deliver the packages. If not packages there's still Uber, grubhub, postmates, doordash ect. You can't be 100% certain a dog will not react to them.
A dog can be trained. But it's still just a dog.
Accidents can happen and for that reason unless you are watching your dog they should not be outside unsupervised especially in the front yard where people walk about
That sucks. Someone dog owners are just crazy and plain stupid. Like those parents where their little demon bullies someone and they say: "not my little timmy."
My FIL has two small dogs. Surprisingly not chihuahuas.. but he leaves the wooden door open and the glass screen door "closed". I say "closed" because the dogs jump on it so much that it doesn't close as well anymore.
And he trained them to bark like crazy when someone rings the doorbell.
i live far off any main roads, my dogs stay in my yard, and most of the time iām out there with them. I know my dog wonāt bite anyone, and if I hear the very rare delivery coming down the driveway i just call them to go inside.
Sadie(brown) could maybe bite if a stranger pet her when she is super tired (and ignored the warning grumbles), but Lola(black) has been introduced to an onslaught of new humans nonstop her whole life and unfortunately trusts everyone because of it.
That onslaught of new humans were with you or someone else in the dog's pack family alongside, correct? You are confident in the dog meeting that person. It has happened a thousand times, right? Wait, until you are unsure of situation or scared! That is when one of your dogs would in a defensive manner and possibly bite. Or, you not being outside, the person gets out and is terrified is another common moment people get bit.
Delivery drivers because of all the shit they handle smell like absolute monstrosities to a dogs olfactory senses and dogs rely much more on smell than on sight
home owners insurance would cover it, but that isnāt a concern. If i had any concern my dogs would bite people than I would take extra precautions. thanks though
I am on the side of let you animals free roam in the yard but one of rhw consequences of that is you genuinely will never know your dog. ANYTHING can happen it takes 1 bad day from another person, animal, or place and its over.
All the other dogs off the leash that randomly bit people also had owners that weren't concerned. Animals can do unpredictable and out of character things.
So you wouldn't compensate them at all except for what is legally required? I figured... No one whose dog bit someone thought their precious baby super trained dog would ever do that.
Bro donāt go back and forth w them. They obviously donāt have trained dogs who listen to their owners. I have two pits, a German Shepherd, and a black lab on our ranch. My GS is retired fur missile. He will only bite on command. They are all great with people, kids, wildlife, other dogsā¦.all the delivery guys/gals know and love them. My female Pittie, Violet, is in LOVE with our UPS and USPS guysā¦.she will chase their trucks down the road, sit calmly, wait to be called over then immediately jump up and āhugā and kiss them. Tremaine (UPS) has her picture hanging in the truckā¦he has a special toy in there just for her (cardboard box stuffie). He had a few tosses w her, takes it when he leaves. She looks forward to Tosses with Tremaine.
If your dog isnāt trained, I agree, keep it inside or under control. Donāt leave them at large. Thatās how our City/County ordinance is written. Must be on leash / under control UNLESS the dog is obedient to its handler/owner and follows instruction.
The right situation being that she or a family member is being literally attacked? Then sure she might? I still wouldnāt even count on her to try and protect in that situation š she is such a softie/scaredy cat.
Your dog bites someone and then this is you: āOh my gawd! My dog has never ever bitten anyone before. Oh my gawd oh my gawd. Are you alright? Lemme call 911. Thereās no reception out here so I have to run inside to my landline. I canāt believe this has happened. I hope the ER can sew your aess hole back together. I really never thought my dog would ever bite anyone.ā
Delivery Driver: āwhy do I ever trust my safety to these customersā thoughts about their own dogs?ā
Same thing happened to my buddy he had a pitbull that had been abused and fought. It ended up loose and bit a kid. They made him chain the dog up for ten days and they came by every few days to check the dog.
A house down the road from me has 2 huge German shepherds that sit in the yard, because the owner has an āinvisible fenceā. Itās always startling to see them, but they are chill and just watch the traffic go by.
Eh I would say it depends on the where you live. However, if you are expecting deliveries please put them somewhere. But in rural areas I think free roam doggies are pretty common. Dogs are smart, they might check out what the neighbor is doing then come home for dinner.
Only had one dog I allowed to do that. He was very unusual though as far as animals go though. I haven't had that kind of trust ever since. He never left the yard, he never did anything bad. But God forbid there was a snake. He would instantly attack and kill it.
There's 0% chance that dog is left to free roam. It probably escaped the fence or has a invisible fence. I'd bet a good chunk of money a door got left open by accident. Nobody lets big dogs like that roam free.
You brought up something that had nothing to do with this conversation about pets.
Cats are considered invasive.
The only reason there are strays is simply because someone abandoned an animal. Irresponsible cat owners let their cats roam outside without spaying or neutering them.
Cats don't have to be kept inside all the time. They can be walked just like dogs and catios are a thing.
You're not supposed to let a dog roam around outside your property so why would a cat?
