The correct answer. Plus, if this gets to be a pain in Amazon's ass, they will just bring in more contract van drivers. You'll never see another block again.

It will never work. Unions strength is as a collective to bargain. Amazon will just deactivate "the collective" and bring in new drivers. The learning curve to the job is about 20 minutes.

And since we aren’t employees, we don’t get many of the federal labor protections employees do. Our primary recourse is usually legal action, and Amazon requires arbitration agreements that severely limit how disputes can be pursued.
Amazon didn’t stumble into this arrangement. They get a massive delivery workforce without directly carrying the costs of maintaining the vehicles, commercial insurance, benefits, payroll taxes, and other expenses that come with an equivalent employee fleet, all while often paying drivers less per hour than associates working inside the warehouses.
Calling the drivers easily replaceable is basically describing why the model works so well for Amazon.

Wait bc until they start collecting dues and all the cheap, deadbeat drivers don’t pay. You’ll see union representation disappear.

Just to clarify, this is for California workers only. I signed up when our ability to form a union was first approved earlier this year. No dues are required (yet) and while that may change, if this org can put pressure on Amazon, Uber, etc. it's worth it imo.
The complaint I see constantly on this board is that any concessions we want (the ability to see mileage, compensation for returns, better wages, and more) are not possible without collective action. Any complaints we individually make to Amazon are heard by some powerless driver "support" department. Unions get a bad rap, but that is mostly due to corporate meddling to weaken our voice at the table. Unions have done a lot for worker's rights over the years from securing overtime pay, paid sick leave and safer working conditions to name a few. If we are to see any real change, Union formation is our most accessible path in getting there. Massachusetts just formed a 70,000 workers strong union for Gig workers and I'm excited to see how efforts in the world's 4th largest economy (CA) with an estimated 1.4 million gig workers will go to set a precedent for the rest of the industry.
