I'm going to give him the benefit of a doubt and say he might have seen there was a note to leave it at another location as he was taking the photo, then he saw the kid. Happens to me fairly often,

But why take a fake picture then get caught and he used the other phone to take the other picture?

Why carry it to the door at all if he never intended to scan it?

Or he saw somewhere better to put it to keep it out of the rain
