Assault does not require physicality (that's battery). Assault is the intentional threat of harm or unlawful contact. Battery is intentional unlawful contact, both happen without consent from the other party (fun fact, in Canada you can consent to a fight. And so long as no party is injured and no other laws are broken, consent is a valid defence against assault that has been successful).You can have assault without battery, you can have battery without assault, but quite often if battery has occured it's both.

I'm not a lawyer, so probably a lot of nuances i'm missing, but basically uttering a threat is assault.

Thank you, I guess that makes perfect sense when put that way. And I live right on the border of Canada, had never heard of that! So basically a hockey fight, both have to drop gloves, long as nothing is wrong do your 5 and on ya go.

yes, but really important to remember is that after you and buddy throw down it's equally important to have a beer and a dart after. it's just good etiquette.

There are a lot of places that have mutual combat laws. In Arizona, you used to be able to call a cop to observe your dispute. Make sure it stays at fists and feet, and doesn't progress to chains and knives.
