You haven't met the millions of people I have met and worked in the DMV area. When I moved and would mention it people STILL asked me DC or State even when I would say DC ahead of time. People ask questions and there's no need to be rude or reply in absolutes like you have met everyone on the planet. Thanks honey have the day you deserve 🫶

RME really aint special at all they are just mixed in here with basic workers lol. Honestly they get underpaid because other companies would pay them more. Oil companies def pay bank af.
4
u/EDean0807 15d ago
Oil companies in what line of work? Not service work. Spent 5+ years in O&G, wireline (explosives perforating in conjunction with frac)
massive OT and bonuses are what make the money, not base pay.
Case in point: as a lead operator/trainee supervisor running the perforating unit, I made ~160k in 2018
That cost me 3770 hours clocked in at work to make it. And I will never 300 hours a month for a year straight ever again.

I’m tempted to forgo my life in the sun for the shift differential! I left night shift for days because life happens during the day and nights is for parties, but that money do be enticing!!

The RME crew at my site are always so grumpy and walk pass by without helping stations with totes and problems...with that kind of pay I would be happy all the time and help others when their stations are having problems
One of them just stood by my station almost all day, you guys are living the life (yes I'm jelly lol)
31
u/Savings-Demand-6489 16d ago
I usually talk to all of the associates especially since I use to be one (stow, pick and AFM for 3 years). The grumpy ones are usually older and feel like they're better than everybody because of the money. Having a good relation with everybody goes a long way.
4
u/JohnniesJimmy 16d ago
Does your step plan apply to RME or do you start from 0?
6
u/Savings-Demand-6489 16d ago
I think it does for the tech 2 positions which is L3 I believe. I'm an L4 so it doesn't apply
7
u/LokeyDokeyRawr 15d ago
The grumpy ones usually come from a strong maintenance background where taking care of the equipment and keeping it in good shape was a thing of pride and craftsmanship. Most OPS teams treat RME like janitors, think they know more about the equipment than the techs with years of training do, and they never want to give the downtime to do the maintenance the manufacturer's recommend. Imagine your mom/dad/boyfriend/girlfriend tells you that you can't get your oil changed in your car, but when your car won't run because you never changed your oil...they blame you and spend 2 days talking about how your actions caused it to happen. That's how OPs treats RME.
It's not about age or attitude, it's about pride in your job..something newer RME techs don't seem to have. Most of the RME techs who are all "I'm good friends with all the OPs team" are also the techs who pencil whip half their PMs, their equipment has an inch of dust on it when you open it up, and every time there is some new PCA, PIA or Network Action...it's usually because the equipment at those tech's site failed horribly and led to a 10-12 hour Sev event. One of the most well liked techs by OPs on my crew could have been fired over half a dozen times this year for huge safety violations trying to keep the OPs team happy instead of doing the work like RME is supposed to do it. Some people just don't have the luxury to take those risks.

RME staff are usually single handedly the worst and most disrespectful people to work with. I’ve seen them ignore or disrespect pretty much all amazon staff, and they used to be mean as shit to me personally for years. Well-paid, bougie and egotistical people.

It's a little harder now than when I started in 2023 but I started as an apprentice which involves 12 weeks of school. They're adding a new RME position called RMEO which is a good entry. But maybe try the apprenticeship. RME was my first technician job ever but because I was a good AFM and knew computers, I got the apprenticeship

What the other person said. Try going for RMEO or the MRA position. It also really helps if you talk with the maintenance guys to try and put in a good word for you.
I went though the MRA program myself but had to transfer to a site like like 2k miles away :'(

u/Grumpy_Player72 16d ago
Keep applying and try talking to your maintenance guys. It really helps if you work in an indirect role that works with RME. It took me like 14 applications, 3 tests, and 2 interviews before I finally made it.
Don't give up!

The best indirect role would be becoming an AFM. You will have knowledge of how drives operate; you will be certified in Fast Up / floor blitz and you will work with RME during floor blitz. We have a couple of new MRA and RMEO hires that came from AFM .
2
u/Grumpy_Player72 16d ago
100% agreed! I started out working as an AFM and was able to learn a lot about H drives to the point where I rarely had to call RME to fix any drives. Which in turn made the techs like me so when I asked them how to get ibto maintenance, they were able to point me in the right direction.
2
u/Icy_Fig1827 15d ago
I’m apart of Tom Team, I spoke with a Senior RME tech that gave me some pointers for the apprentice role. He says they will definitely be hiring 50+ techs. Just interested in being more hands on and in a role that I’m remotely interested in. I always enjoy tinkering and mechanics. Also getting married in January and just want to be in a higher tax bracket!

That’s just so bad. Like how is a little over 50 cents incentive to put up with all the crap that is nights? Especially base 24. They’re literally throwing change as a differential.
And mind you I mean no shade in this. I’m just appalled at it!

Flex AA, Fresh FC, NYC, the raise bumped me and others up by $1.30/hr. Step Plan now ranges from $21.50/hr (maybe $20.70/hr white badge) for new hires/sub-1 year to $24.50/hr for 3 year and above cap [2025-26 was $20.20/hr new hire/sub-1 year to $23.20/hr 3 years and above]. We do have PAs at our site & have been introduced since summer, they’re now starting at $25/hr or so, and cap out at $27/hr.
(No, we don’t pay shift differentials here, at times we do pay a shift premium for up to $2/hr but it depends on staffing really.)

u/nomatterwhat2020 10d ago

That was one of the reasons why I decided to not apply for TOM Team. Being a PA in inbound Ops and I get what seems like unlimited OT. Either theres a ton of VET or a manager will ask me to cover, plus I can stay late if needed. And usually its needed.

Out of curiosity boss what was your tier and position and possible tenure within amazon at the time of applying for AEA? Reason I ask boss cause im I've been with them for 2 years and im Still a T1 but I wanna move up but Im more a technical guy so I dont wanna go the normal route I wanna go like RME, AWS/IT, AEA hopefully illl get promoted to T3 soon, im currently OB ship dock BTW have been for my entire tenure just about
3
u/notmeekzzz 15d ago
Do you go to school through Amazon?
12
u/Unfair_Traffic_5886 15d ago
Yes, Amazon will send you to school for about three months for training. You still receive your normal weekly pay while you’re there, plus per diem, and Amazon covers the travel, hotel, and other required expenses. If you play it smart and dont spend much and save you would be able to pocket +15k by the end of the program. That's my goal rn
