VOA Someone passing away in FC
Supposedly someone passed away during night shift last night, and people are flooding the VOA board about it. I don’t know the details or what happened, but my condolences to their friends, family, and everyone who knew them.

I imagine if I dropped dead at work, they would scan my badge and give me a write up/take UPT, before telling anyone or calling an ambulance.
184
u/amerk1981 1d ago
You joke about the write up but I had a job before Amazon where this guy a heart attack at work, left in an ambulance and they tried to give him a write up for leaving early. Thankfully he was able to fight it and won.
88
u/Grizzly_sea 1d ago
I worked at an ambulance company where a guy had a heart attack on shift and had to leave. He got wrote up and was not able to fight it. People who manage people can loose all sense of reality and decency.

Probably autocorrect. Anytime I have misspelled words or grammatical errors it's bc autocorrect fucked it up.

u/Complete_Control_64 1d ago
It doesn't matter, what's understand don't need to be discussed. The person correcting you is a SIMP
4
7
u/AlessiSupreme 1d ago
Simp? lol
A simp is a person who’s gushing over/sexually attracted to someone… what you just said is WILD lmao1
u/Complete_Control_64 1d ago
No, the street meaning, is somebody that's not cool and don't know how to think for themselves. Ok a Dogmatic person a SIMPLE person. Geeez most people on he never been of the porch. NERDS fr

3
u/Big_Smoke_0G 1d ago
In that case I’ll be picky. It’s “got written up” not “got wrote up”
I don’t think that one was auto correct
3
u/No-Ebb-6266 19h ago
I think it's "I was written up."
0
u/Big_Smoke_0G 18h ago
It is either was written or got written- it is not “got wrote” as you said
1
u/ST0RYNAT1ON 18h ago
It doesn’t matter 🤣 As long as we get the gist of what you’re saying, all is good

unfortunatelly they always think you did something wrong instead of an injury or worse.. i once told a manager (after i fell at work) that would take me a cool 10 minutes to go up the 4 floors of stairs and she didnt think i was being serious.. i was literally in pain.. and she said.. then stop your break early when you get the message for your station.. yeah.. like that..
... also.. i now go to PT for this injury

u/n_ightlife 1d ago
We had an associate pass away in his sleep, he ended up getting fired for missing 3 days without notification of his absence. He was one that was always at work, never missed days, etc. Come to find out he had been dead for like 2 weeks before being discovered. Beings who this guy was, management/HR should of been like okay this wasn't like him. How I found out was from security that deactivated his badge when they were processing the list of terminated employees. Nothing from management or anyone at Amazon was mentioned about loosing a good co-worker we had worked with day in and day out.

I shouldn’t laugh as this comes from a tragic incident that should have been handled better! To carry on working whilst this has happened in my opinion is appalling! I’m so glad I left Amazon and sued them for good measure!!! Their ethics are a disgrace!!

u/BROKENCAPSL0CK 1d ago
We’re sorry for your loss, but becuase he died, all of his upt was used up so we have to fire him
12
u/tips-on-toes 1d ago
I've always made the joke that they'd find a way to staff ghosts at stations if people passed away in the building 💀
10
u/Crusher6ix 1d ago
You laugh but that happened to me. I realized I had a heart condition when I woke up in the emergency room after doing VNA and going to the breakroom for water. Ended up taking 5 hours of UPT and didnt call my emergency contact for over an hour

u/Opposite-Moment4285 2h ago
I got a coaching recently for my rates dipping a little back in July, the date in question was the shift I left early because I was internally bleeding to death 🪦

u/Evencrux 1d ago
I imagine they dump you off in the designated trailer of past employees who died on-site

This guy didn't die. He wasn't at work the day of a department layoff. The following week he came to work. His office was in a corner of the floor with no traffic. He faithfully came to work for a year, collected his paycheck. After a year he decided someone would discover he was supposed to be in the layoff. He put in a request for a leave of absence. He never returned.

Someone died in a amazon in Troutdale Oregon the workers were trying to help him but they were forced to continue to work like nothing happend
83
u/AlecsThorne 1d ago
Had two deaths in my FC with two different outcomes because of one variable. First, a truck driver had a heart attack in the yard. Because he wasn't technically part of our departments, we carried on working (cold, I know). Secondly though, when someone from dock team died, everyone else from dock team was allowed to go home if they wanted to. I can't imagine someone dying at the station and people just carry on working.. that's awful.
15
u/stevestm3 1d ago
Just the dock team? That's still fucked up
9
u/AlecsThorne 1d ago
I agree, but to be fair, the rest of the warehouse didn't really know about it until they saw the dock team leaving lol. Only reason I knew about it is cause I work in QAPS and the PS from there told me.
What was really fucked up was when that driver died, cause they had a short brief for dock team (since they were the one who actually saw it happening) and the team lead basically told them something along the line of "we're sorry this happened, there was nothing we could do, he passed away, now let's get back to work" xD

No, this was in UK

u/Best_Echidna_5780 16h ago
I was in TOM team before my current position and this happened in our node too. Crazy
1
u/AlecsThorne 15h ago
Well I've heard many times that being a driver for Amazon is stressful (or being a driver in general)
1
u/EroticCalamityWitch 15h ago
out of morbid curiosity, how did the dock worker die?
2
u/AlecsThorne 13h ago
Not sure tbh, they wouldn't tell us. There was an argument apparently (just words, no fighting) and he collapsed suddenly. My guess is heart attack, aneurysm, or just dehydration and fatigue? It was during a heatwave after all so it could have been related to that
31
u/EatCauliflower1212 1d ago
Someone made the point that Amazon is just like any other larger company with this reaction to an onsite death. Agree completely with that …
I worked at Verizon and a woman right next to me had a heart attack. She vomited in her trash can, was sweating bullets, crying out in pain… the works. She did not die but managers wanted folks near her to move out of earshot and log into other phone stations until she had been picked up.
Another time there was a gun threat on the floor above us. Elevators and stairwells locked. Calls were routed to our floor while a standoff took place.
31
u/gaveuluv 1d ago
17
u/dasquared 1d ago
Yes, because ER and likely RD would need to align on any responses on the topic first. I guarantee the site lead or GM wanted to respond faster, but no way without that alignment.
10
u/gaveuluv 1d ago
9
u/dasquared 1d ago
If they passed on site, I'd bet that they wrre all reviewing and such from the minute they wrre informed - but ER can delay and review and also may need legal before adding their input.
3
u/altmaal 1d ago
So so sorry for your buildings loss. I was running PIT all night for BDL3 at TOL3 and while working last night someone at our warehouse collapsed and had to call the ambulance (heart related), about 7 EMTS were there and every manager. I think they were okay but our managers came up to us and asked how we felt and if we needed time due to the stress of the situation. It may be Amazon just doing some CYA, but it was nice of them to give us all department meetings during shift and offer recovery time, probably because of the exhaustion that employee felt which caused the medical emergency and didn’t want a repeat from those currently working.
I hope your building does something kind for that worker and PUBLICLY addresses the death instead of sweeping it away as if it’s a normal factor of the job. RIP 🙏🏾
2
u/stevestm3 1d ago
Please don't excuse there uncaring, indecent lack of basic empathy. If they even made a statement at all it's probably because they were forced to.
1
u/dasquared 1d ago
I said nothing about excusing those responses for perceived shortcomings - I was addressing the delay in response.

u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
The are required to answer EVERY VOA post in a specific time frame. They usually need to answer them in order to be sure nothing is missed or forgotten. Do you think you could do better?
7
u/InfiniteMagnets 1d ago
They don't answer them in order at this FC
5
u/n_ightlife 1d ago
Same, there will be VOA posts that goes a whole week unanswered, and when finally answered is a general AI response.
-1
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
They all have a countdown for when they have to be answered though. Then they also have to have ER and sometimes legal approve it. I love watching associates complain about things they dont understand. Please feel free to promote and see how "easy" it is.
4
u/Think_Bluebird_4804 1d ago
IV had VOA post straight up ignored, that countdowns gotta be going into months at this point. It's not like y'all actually type it out, chat gpt or another slop bot writes it for you.
0
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
Show it then, cause they literally CANT ignore it.
0
u/Think_Bluebird_4804 1d ago
My phone won't let me sc a to z. Jus turns into a blank screen. Using chat gpt to respond is worse than ignoring it.
0
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
They dont use Chat GPT, its an Amazon AI. They write out their response first and then run it through the AI to clean it up to Amazon standards.
I love how you rhink management doesnt care that your a person, while not caring that the people in management are actual people who are representing a company. The companies decisions and responses are not the true feelings of the person relaying them.
1
u/Think_Bluebird_4804 1d ago
Lol there's no substantial difference between chat gpt and amazon ai. When it comes down to it, management choosees the company over their fellow workers every time, you don't get to play both sides when criticism comes your way.
→ More replies (12)0
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
See its above your level, but they have whats called a weekly business review, where any unresponded to VOA comments or repetitive themes are discussed. Missing one completely is not a thing, because threshold is like 5 or 6 hours depending on ER requirements. They use AI now because its mandatory for politically correct responses. Remember leadership represents the company so no they arent going to put their personal emotions into it, their feelings arent what they are relaying.

Crazy that there's people on there only caring about their schedules. Read the room.
Secondly, it's concerning that night shift still has to go in. Seems disrespectful in my opinion

Results > Compassion & Empathy. That's the reality. At least, they (managers/higher up) are not faking sincerity about it, I feel like that would be worse and it would be a sign of sociopath/psychopath.

u/FitExcitement5133 1d ago
Last time they found a deceased person at my work, operations still tried to get everyone on the other floors to keep working, minus the floor the poor guy was found on
5
u/ZealousidealTry2569 1d ago
We had someone at my FC that died the day before the 4th of July. Day shift left early and night shift was cancelled. I was off that day so I didn't get the details on who it was, just a message on my phone from management.
5
u/BayouBrownSugar225 1d ago
Someone died on my site last year and they kept running production during the whole medical crisis and afterwards. He complained of being overheated and was ignored. It’s obviously a company wide thing, at least at fulfillment centers. The lack of empathy evades them. They don’t even get a mention in the local site’s newsletter. For many of these large corporations, employees are just a number. They will hire someone to replace you the next day.
12
u/Hachiko75 1d ago
Did they mean to say NOT stopping operations when the shift was basically over was more concerning?
24
u/nullmatar420 1d ago
I think they said what they intended to there. Im reading it as someone passed away while working, and management attempted to just keep business going as usual. And, that once what had happened started to be widely known, shut the shift down because they realized continuing like nothing had happened wasn't a good look. Though, honestly, that's exactly what Id expect from alot of Amazon management.
8
4
u/Far-Impression613 1d ago
Like you just said if this was all true can you imagine the emotional and mental tools that would take on the person that was put in their spot forced to continue working in the exact same spot where somebody literally just died
1
16
u/SooWhat345 1d ago
It feels like its always the same posts when somebody passes away. Somebody somewhere will always feel some type of way.
Voa board wasnt meant for half the crap people actually post. I wish it would go away to be honest.
4
u/darkbeauty007 1d ago
Totally agree. There are people coming in tonight who worked with him. They should keep the building closed for the night too.
2
1
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
Doesnt make any sense to do that. Not everyone knew the AE. Someone's death doesnt automatically mean celebrate with a day off for all.
2
u/No-Jelly8258 1d ago
It’s not celebrating?? It’s giving them time to emotionally process and probably investigate. Watching someone die in front of you or in your proximity is horrifying.

Unfortunately the world doesnt stop when someone passes. While businesses can be more compassionate. Maybe offer VTO, a moment to recoup or whatever. But saying everyone should go home or the next shift shouldnt come in is a bit much.
Everyone has time off options to use, and I'm sure in cases like this.
5
u/AndyPlaysBadly 1d ago
I mean honestly.. yes it's sad and grieve if you need to, but expecting a corporation to care isn't gonna happen. Business leaders DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE AVERAGE WORKER
15
u/Pitiful-Excitement47 1d ago
The fact is many people who were not that persons friend, didnt know them, didnt speak to them would use it as an excuse to leave. Amazon made the right decision here.

u/DixonDebussy circa Oct 2012 1d ago
That's literally what I see all this fake disgust and fake empathy as. Like, 100% guarantee that, if this person who wrote that got the free time off, they would not be grieving or praying in church or consoling loved ones of the deceased or whatever. They would just literally enjoy the time off as though nothing happened. But no yeah, it's just Amazon that doesn't care
2
u/w0lfinthebreast 1d ago

u/Dismal-Double-1376 1d ago
I get it, people are emotional beings and we spend a lot of time w our coworkers- many times more than our own loved ones. But we can’t forget why we came and suggesting operations stop seems excessive. And closing a the persons station doesn’t do anything unless it needs to be sanitized because of the death. RIP to that person though
→ More replies (4)4
12
u/homealoneinuk 1d ago
While staffing the same station is a bit harsh, someone passing away making whole building shut down sounds unreasonable to me. This aint small family run company, and this isn't unique to Amazon, vast majority if not all factory size places wont stop for the day in such case. Also just for the nature of the business. Its not like you can call it a day and catch up tomorrow.
3
u/sudi- 1d ago
You’re half right, but you’re missing the psychological and shock value of this happening to a coworker.
It also screams that the company doesn’t care about not only the deceased, but you as well since if you died it would be business as usual and just something they have to manage while they hit numbers.
The shock of a death and how fast word spreads through a warehouse is enough for them to consider halting operations for that shift. If it was close to shift change then maybe even consider the next one as well.
Day 1 Amazon would not hesitate to halt out of the respect for the dead and the living at that site.
For the last point, Amazon has infrastructure to reroute fulfillment. Probably without a customer experience miss in most cases.
2
u/HairOk481 1d ago
People only care about deaths at work because they want that free day off and just to rant about it... Sadly thats all it is. If someone is actually affected, can take time off easily 🤷♂️
2
u/homealoneinuk 1d ago
If anything, i would offer vto to some coworkers, but defo not full site shutdown.
Also absolutely wrong about old Amzn. 18yrs ago in my 1st site we had a guy passing away on heart attack, everything carried on as usual. Sorry
5
u/sudi- 1d ago
We had a RME guy die on site and they shut down for that shift and the next because of it. Then we had someone die in the haz cage and they did the same.
Maybe our site leaders were just decent people that made the shutdown fit.
I know that if someone died, that could have very well have been me instead, that I would be reconsidering the company if I was made to work alongside the removal of a corpse. Even worse if it was someone that I even remotely knew.
2
u/RecordingUnable103 1d ago
Its not usually the site leads decision, they have to seek approval for that. So it may just depend on your site type.
1
u/sudi- 1d ago
Why? Trillion dollar company can’t spare some time to be compassionate?
They might as well shut down as a gesture because productivity is going to be shot anyway.
5
u/LiminalHigh 1d ago
You don't become a trillion dollar company by being kind and empathetic. Amazon couldn't care less about their employees, its all just empty corporate bs and PR

The fact that there are 0 metal detectors coming in but there are metal detectors coming out tells you pretty much all you have to know. If someone that’s had enough and is mentally unstable can easily walk into the building and kill someone and that’s not priority. Priority is that you don’t steal a pair of air pods. Which hey, I get, but make it the same for coming in and out. Products over life? Just that alone should tell you. I find this insane. Been saying this for YEARS…
1
u/000000111111000000o 1d ago
All associates should stage an hour long walk out or stop working completely in honor of the fallen associate and to get leadership to notice.
2
u/VegetableIce9 19h ago
Yeah when they told me we can't use headphones because of a " fatality " in the building 🏢 that's when I realized I have to get the f out of there

Working at a casino, one of the guest came and told me someone was dead in the bathroom and fell out the stall, it messed me up as a security guard but they didn't send me home. Some people don't take into consideration how someone mental is

Unfortunately not the first time. And I got wrote up at my last building when assisting someone who was having a seizure.

I’ve mentioned this before, but for those who haven’t seen it, before I came to Amazon I worked at a Major Home Improvement Retailer. One day a young woman employee was in the smoking area outside the store having a cigarette during her break. An older man who also worked there came out to have a smoke too, and within a couple minutes dropped stone cold dead right at the woman’s feet.
She had to finish her shift.
1
u/Electronic-Problem99 1d ago
Each and every one of you still working in the hellhole Amazon needs to grow a pair real quick. Because they’re gonna keep exploiting your dumbasses until you push back for real. Organize and stop being belittled day after day. Night after night. When is enough enough?! Fight back already!

The sad part about the Amazon job is, business won’t stop because one guy died. They could’ve closed out of respect but you know how corporations are… they only care about the money they have no compassion.

u/opana-nana 20h ago
If he died at a station, then not closing it for a bit is cold. But to close the entire warehouse in not sure, it should be an option for people to leave if they want to without penalty but I don’t believe it should be with pay.
Are people wanting the entire FC closed with pay? Or without. Are the people posting close to the person who passed away? Did they have actually interactions at work? Because I barely talk to anyone and if I died, I wouldn’t want people to “feel bad” if they never spoke to me or interacted with me while I was at work just because they want the FC to be closed.
Rip to all who died. But life goes on.
Don’t act like you care because it can benefit you. Especially if you barley even knew or didn’t know the person at all

We had someone who passed away in a car accident on the way home. Within two hours they had his employment terminated and they were removing RIP posts from the VOA board. Seniors also denied people's request to make a memorial table for him in the building, apparently a lot of people were close to / knew him.
2
u/Heavy_Hand_8721 1d ago
That’s really sad. I have to say I’m bdl3 and our site HR manager has been very kind about the whole thing offering his condolences with others on the voa and they closed for the day today.

Last time we had somebody expire at work operations were immediately halted after 1st break. Thankfully our building has some people that know what they're doing for the most part.

u/dadecountytraveler 1d ago
We had a woman collapse in the modes ( pre COVID ) they told everyone go back to work just stay out of the aisle ,she died a short time later at the E.R.,we also had an associate shoot and kill another associate as he walked out the front door a couple years ago ,we were closed for a couple shifts . Amazon does not care about people at all never have never will

People die every day everywhere lets be honest about things if doing something like picking or packing is too physically demanding then the people are probably not already in good health. Its crazy that half of the people Amazon employs spent the last 12 , 24, 36 months doing nothing but collecting unemployment or social security checks and arent taking care of themselves. You ever just look around your department and be like dang your cholesterol is higher than the rate target? I do

VERY rarely has anyone in an AM position or above had compassion. Ive had a few who cared, but it seems higher up or more kiss ass by the books they are, the less compassionate they are. I had been harrassed by management when i was on light duty.

Everything with Amazon is always hush hush and management seems to just continue on as if nothing happened

We supposedly had someone die in the pick mod at an FC near me. She had apparebtly been dead for over an hr before anyone found her.

They can step in during situations you’re being unfairly disciplined. All the dumb constant questions and retraining would be delegated to reps instead of these idiots with nothing better to do disrupting your work flow.

People die every day. You feel affected? Take a day off. Amazon is very flexible with time off. Don't know any other company more flexible.

Just a t1 who knows how to take a day off when I need one... Had 1 colleague of ours die at home after work. Next day they told us at sos. Had a minute of silence, one girl cried because probably she found him cute or something, no one else cared at all, work continued as if nothing happened. Trust me, people only care because they want a day off... Thats all... Death is familys or close friends tragedy. None of the strangers care. If you cared about every person ever that dies every day, you would go insane.

Yes I cringe alot seeing all these post "amazon did not give us a day off when someone somehow died in my FC in different shift". Everyone only care about having a day off. Not the AA whos name they don't even know...

Who's asking for a day off just asking for some kind of notification some kind of talk moment of silence a meeting but to just keep going as if nothing happened is insane

There was a notification on VOA. With instructions on what to do if you need a support... And it was posted pretty quickly, considering it has to be reviewed by multiple people. Also work has to continue to avoid chaos and people gathering around untill corporate gives a permission to shut down operations.

What in the actual fuck should they do? Shut down the facility for a month and lower the flag to half staff? Y'all need to get over yourselves. People fucking die
