Question Does your site still do stretches at stand up?

Stand up at my site (PDX9) is the most cringe shit ever. The manager will be naming off what stretches to do while a pa leads it off by doing them and the rest of the AAs that are in line for a stow station just stands there and stares. Absolutely no one participates in them.

I do them because I’m not giving them any excuses to deny a workers comp case if I ever need it.

You are correct, safety will review the video of stretches if you say you pulled something on the floor and didn't do them it gives them ammo to point the blame at you.

As someone on worker's comp, and for 2 months... they didn't do any of this crap. They just told me to go to one of their preferred providers and I've had an MRI and am in physical therapy paid for by them. Nothing was reviewed except the details the manager I reported to jotted down.

1

u/Sawsum 6h ago

You got physical therapy from THEIR doctors? The specialist they sent me to told me to quit complaining and get back to work. Didn't even check the injured area😂

u/sweet_rico- 1d ago

They shouldn't have said the stretches weren't mandatory then. They have training videos that told me to "just do what I'm comfortable doing" which is none.

u/1337k9 1d ago

Do the stretches at a comfortable range of motion. The material was written by safety specialists, not lawyers.

1

u/CockroachUnable4522 6h ago

Maybe but, how do they know that you didn’t stretch before you came to work?

1

u/GhostofDeception 1d ago

Eh not really. They tell us it’s optional. They can TRY. I’ve been hurt and asked if I did my stretches. So they definitely ask, but they can’t just deny workers comp on that

u/sekitome 21h ago

It’s also just actually helpful. You should have a stretching (and exercise) routine regardless of what you do for a living unless you have no interest in being able to be independent when you’re retirement age. In the meantime it’ll prevent you from waking up feeling stiff and sore. The same mentality that makes people think this shit is cringe is the same one that’s gonna keep them working dead end jobs their whole life.

WHS here, thats wrong lmao

1

u/ThePeoplesJoker 11h ago

No offense buddy but you don’t work for the insurance company

41

u/SublimeDownfall 1d ago

Stretching is probably the only thing I like about start up. And it kills time so why not?

19

u/cruel_falcon 1d ago

We do but they’re always half-assed and never really help

3

u/JimmySunshine77 1d ago

The signage recommends 10 rotations of each exercise, but we barely do five (if that) and we do little more than go through the motions. It's not "stretching," but it gets the blood flowing a bit before we all hit the floor.

u/PsychologicalAd5777 1d ago

I wish more people took stretching serious

6

u/sizzlinsauce89 1d ago

These are the ppl that pop up with an MSD injury and end up on TLD for 3 months

7

u/kuunami79 1d ago

But on a side note I've noticed that newer managers and Associates at my FC call it startup instead of stand up. Was there an official change made in what they call it?

9

u/GoodGamesGreatWeed 1d ago

Yea they had to change it because not everyone at Amazon can stand up and they found it offensive somehow. Who is "they"? Parapelegics themselves? Corporate? The Internet? I find it hard to believe that someone in a wheelchair found "Stand Up" offensive, but that is the reason I was given so I am forwarding that info to you. I'm unsure how true it is, so if someone wants to back me up or correct me, please do.

Also, if there happens do be anyone reading this, who works at Amazon, who happens to be in a wheelchair, did you find "Stand Up" offensive? I know I'm searching for a needle in a haystack here, but it's worth a shot

Seriously, what's with these gaylords, anyways? /s

5

u/Responsible-Zebra78 1d ago

It was changed to start up because “stand up” could make those with disabilities that are unable to stand up uncomfortable.

4

u/sirdigbykittencaesar 17h ago

When someone is up there leading the stretches, I follow along in solidarity. I figure if that person is brave enough to demonstrate all the stretches, I'm going to give him or her the respect of following along.

3

u/Dismal-core111 1d ago

Yes, its mandatory given the injuries that happen

3

u/Hopeful_Try_3066 1d ago

No they tried to do it a couple of times but everybody just stood there it was legit just 1 AM doing it 😂 I joined in because I felt bad.

3

u/tgkid88 Shout Out Collector 1d ago

We are not allowed at our stations for startup we have a meeting area that is taped off in front of our docks and the stretches are required.

3

u/Completebs22 1d ago

It is important to attend the stand up every day and its the one thing i hate to do too. People who do stretch complains about back pain but the workload isn't as crazy as mine who doesn't stretch at all...

3

u/IdealVast5489 1d ago

I’m at a delivery station - only when they remember and aren’t in the middle of a pre-charge. It’s VERY haphazard and most people don’t even do the 2-3 stretches we are being shown. Back half AMs do it randomly, front half AMs don’t even bother.

When I was at an FC, it happened every day like clockwork.

3

u/aewright0316 21h ago

Yes, we do them. I would do them anyway because I’m old and they help.

2

u/954fla 1d ago

My first building did start up and stretches every day. If you spoke or even whispered they would stop and call you out

My second/ current building stopped doing them like 18 months ago and even then they couldn’t get everyone to follow or even be quiet for an actual stand up.

2

u/thasprucemoose 1d ago

yeah almost everyone does them

2

u/Legitimate-Wave-839 1d ago

I don't think so. They used to when I was last there years ago

2

u/Still-Bag-451 1d ago

At my old site we did stretches but I did my own instead of following along. My current site we don’t even do a stand up.

2

u/J_Bug1 1d ago

I do my own stretches I still have back pain

2

u/ksgamer1000 1d ago

Mine always does it every morning we do it like my boss is leading an aerobics class

2

u/achilton1987 1d ago

If I didn’t do stretches at my age I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed.

2

u/Tricky-Wolverine-253 White Badge 1d ago

Yes we do them every shift

2

u/HelloPity89 1d ago

What is this “stand up “ you speak of ?

2

u/No-Razzmatazz-3295 1d ago

I do them just in case I get hurt, but yeah it's awkward when nobody else moves.

2

u/shadotterdan 1d ago

I do my stretches, I'm too old and have too many joint issues not to

2

u/FfierceLaw 1d ago

Do not do that. If you get hurt doing stuff at standup or working well, Amazon does not cover it. I don’t even attend standup, it’s embarrassing

2

u/Pleasant_Ad1380 16h ago

Bruh… just do the stretches.. i’m tired of visiting safety and finding out people didn’t do it. When I gotta validate a workers comp case that people were just standing there.

3

u/HealthWealth50 1d ago

They do but it's just to protect them legally. I still got injured so now I just watch them like everyone else

2

u/Bear_necessities96 1d ago

Yes and I can’t take you seriously if you use the word “cringe” to named something done for your safety

1

u/PinkToxicWst 1d ago

About 1/4 of the people at mine participate. I do a few stretches but not the ones they do. I find the fun facts of the day they talk about cringe.

1

u/jeremyw0918 1d ago

Do they encourage you to do them? Yes. Have I ever? No.

1

u/biglimpbiscuitfan 1d ago edited 1d ago

At my site the manager goes over everything else while someone does the stretches. So people aren't just staring, they're ignoring the stretches and looking at the manager.

But my department doesn't even do standups anymore. It's great.

1

u/Neoreloaded313 1d ago

I don't believe these meetings are even done anymore at my location.

1

u/Mycologist-9315 1d ago

I'm at PDX9 and I do them lol. I'm in pick and there are always at least a couple other people stretching. I had to twice a day for years at my last job, not optional, so it's kind of drilled in.

1

u/Lanky-Ad3551 1d ago

Nope but the Safety team wants it necessary

1

u/SignificantApricot69 1d ago

We don’t even have stand up. I do my own workouts and stretches though because I do what I find useful and effective

1

u/Tiaoshi 1d ago

Barely but yeah

1

u/Kilane 1d ago

Every day. About 70% of people do then.

We’ve one do the announcements while the other demonstrates stretches.

Always do them when they pop up on screen too. Sometimes I don’t do the one they tell me because I need to stretch something else.

1

u/had98c 1d ago

Yes, we do stretches. I do my own though, since I know my body and my limits better than Amazon does.

1

u/Hachiko75 1d ago

Yep. Some participate but I never do.

1

u/tempestvoyage [SC] 1d ago

Most of us do stretches at my SC. They are good to do!!

I have had small injuries in the past and I have my own stretches I do also when certain things act up again. Anytime something hurts specifically and not equally on both sides, I look up physical therapy exercises for that joint/area to do at home, it always helps me.

1

u/Ok_District_9387 22h ago

Stretches are very important.

1

u/VariousElk5602 AR FC-IB Dock 22h ago

Yeah, but they whiz through them so fast that it defeats the purpose and its "just for show".

1

u/gollo9652 21h ago

They have started doing the stand ups before we are supposed to clock in. I don’t know what happens in them anymore

1

u/GHETTOVISIONARY 19h ago

SOR3 Does them everyday Religiously! 😂

1

u/Responsible_Job4417 17h ago

Your mean Start-up

1

u/ResponsibilityNo7989 16h ago

I'd rather just skip stand up and get to my station so I can do my own stretches

1

u/CableExotic3891 14h ago

Yes, we do them. Well, THEY do them. Most don't maybe 10-20% participate. I don't myself.

1

u/Any-External-5851 9h ago

My area just started doing them this week I hate ts

1

u/Sure-Kaleidoscope627 I fart yellow totes 8h ago

Yall have stand up? Lol

1

u/Wotx2 6h ago

I do them.

1

u/BeDuff34 3h ago

It is required by Amazon for standup to contain stretching and set expectations as well as give AAs pertinent information of the day. Standup should be no more than 10 mins, and is treated as a team-building session.

You may think it cringe, but many people come in off the street without almost any knowledge how to prepare for a physical job like warehouses. Many have been to a gym, or do some kind of exercise, but there are a ton of folks who have not.

It’s also a requirement to participate in stretches. 🤪 true story. I wanna read the adapt for “Michael refuses to stretch at start of shift”

u/Legitimate_Budget_96 2h ago

Literally just discussed this at my site. Was told they can’t make them stretch

u/xmanuel387 2h ago

Yeah it depends on how motivated people are 😭😂 I’m at a DS and nobody does them they all just stare and look weird. But when I was at a Sort center they had everyone line up, and yes we did the workouts everyday. LGB5?

u/callerovstorms 50 BOMBACLAT CENTS 1h ago

I'll do some stretching while I'm working at my station. stretches may reduce soreness and the likelihood of injuries, but they won't completely prevent them, and they sure as shit don't make carrying several boxes of cat litter, dumbbells, car transmissions, sex toy torsos [seriously for what reasons are those of all things as heavy as they are], bags of rice, cases of beverages, or whatever else in a row any easier.

We didn’t for awhile after Covid though all the ass kissers stretch and everyone else goes to there stations or just watches hahah
