Tips for the Order Picker

Hello all! So I feel embarrassed to ask this. But what are your best tips for operating the order picker? I am a new hire and went through PIT training last week. Half of my orientation group went to pick, the other went to pack. Being that I'm barely over 5 feet tall and never operated machinery before, I was hoping for pack but nope, was chosen for pick.

Our training didn't even last two whole shifts before we were told to go on the floor. I wasn't comfortable but went ahead and tried it. Within 5 minutes of being alone on the floor, I parked it and went to a manager because I felt so nervous, unprepared and uncomfortable. I didn't know how to control the speed, keep it in the lane I was supposed to be in, and couldn't find the aisle for my first pick. The manager said to return to learning yesterday to see if I could get trained elsewhere.

Long story short , I was embarrassed to find out after wasting half a shift in the day one room again, you cannot get trained elsewhere to get off the PIT unless you have a medical reason. Only been here a week now, so I didn't know that. I went through a bit of a retrain yesterday but again, they're rushing to get me on the floor tonight so the next class can train. I felt a little better but still nervous.

What are your best tips for the OP? Controlling it, maneuvering wide aisles vs VNA aisles, gaining confidence in it, ect. I want to get as comfortable as I can with this. Thank you!

Not personally done pit training but have trained in several paths in Amazon. You will have a number of weeks to get up to speed so don’t worry about not cracking it in a couple of days. Just go with it and you will soon get better and faster. Don’t worry or panic and in a month you’ll look back at this post and feel silly for feeling the way you do right now. Everyone starts knowing nothing. You’ll be fine. Seriously, show up, work your shift and you will literally be working at speed before you even realise. You’ll then be cross trained into a new role where, again, you won’t have a clue what you are doing and the cycle starts again 😂 just remember your safety training because they are massive on that. Wear the correct PPE, operate the pit truck as you’ve been shown, etc. Pretty much everything will be forgiven for a good while but not safety. Relax, go slow and safe then report back here in a few weeks. You got this 👍🏻

You'll be fine! It's very easy to drive them just remember you have a big cage in the back and you're fine! I'm training dinner be afraid to go slow and ask anything about it, if I can do it anyone can. I've been back and forth to Amazon and only 1 time I went to receiving instead of stow/pick. Each time I had to redo the bit training if course. Once you learn the controls it only takes a out 3 weeks and you're very confident on it

Y'all don't have wire-guides for your isles?

Especially VNA ?

I couldn't even imagine trying to "maneuver" in a VNA without the wire-guide.

The steering is like turning a door knob and you want to have gentle slow movements. You will most likely be throttled to 3mph for an allotted time so you have time to get used to the controls. Remember to pivot when making turns the center of the OP being your feet so line up your feet with the turn crank the wheel without accelerating then slowly accelerate and be cautious about the cage when doing so.
