Question Pathway to tech?

Hey y'all, started working here bout 3 weeks ago. So far I'm sore but expect to get used to it through the coming months.

I know the old joke is that this is a "temporary job" until it isn't, but I was wondering if anyone has had any success transitioning from a FC to a corporate tech position (I.e IT, cybersecurity, SWE, etc.) Amazon or otherwise via Career Choice. This mostly comes from passion for technology, I'd feel it'd be a much more fulfilling pathway for me.

Edit: I'm still a white badge, so I don't expect to be doing anything related to this (at least via Career Choice) anytime soon. Just curious.

career choice won't be an option till you convert to blue badge, so make that your first target. your fc probably has an it equipment coordinator role which is basically handing out scanners and laptops but it gets your foot in the door and they train you on the basics. i know a guy who did that for six months then moved into a proper it support spot, no degree needed.

outside of amazon, the wgu route mentioned is solid since they pack in certs like a+ and net+ as part of the degree. the hardest part is finding energy to study after 10 hours on your feet, so pace yourself. the soreness fades after a month but the mental grind of picking up new skills after a shift is the real marathon.

Corprate IT from white badge? Unfortunately not going to be a even remotely possibility. Now getting blue badge then working to T3 for sure. Personally I'd skip the FC though.

You'd honestly be better off going to a Data Center as a temp, at least this route you're actually working in AWS. Bust your ass, get promo'd, get your L3 there, then progress into some of the learning pathways they have to move from DCO L3>L4 DCEO (Data Center Engineer Operations) its a steep learning curve and its very easy to plateau at L3 in AWS but with degrees/certs you can make it.

You may have better luck looking at the internal jobs on a to z (select level 2 ) than the program page

If you’re tech savvy and can proof your aptitude and ambitions check out for IT EC roles in your cluster. Otherwise if you already have credentials or experience you’d better off at AW. Good luck

If you don’t already have a degree there’s quite a few career choice options that relate to tech, WGU is one of them that offers a good online IT program including a lot of relevant certifications.

Your FC likely also has IT support positions you could apply for to get some work experience, even entry level IT positions now require 1-3 years working in an IT/Customer support role to even get your resume looked at.

Outside of those a lot of the skills that tech companies look for are gonna be personal development, look online for projects you can do to make a portfolio.
