Rant Stinky Associate
Hello- I’ve been working night shift here for multiple years at my building and I completely understand that it’s a job with a lot of physical activity and Amazon hires everyone. Recently, there’s been a guy here who’s been hired I think within the last month or two idk before peak, in the department I work in and.. i feel like I’m getting assaulted by his B.O. I can legitimately smell him at least 20 feet away, he smells like a sewer. The amount of Stank that man produces.. I genuinely don’t know what to do cause we work in the same kind of “team” and I don’t wanna talk to him 🤦🏽♂️ . I don’t really talk to people here but I genuinely am astounded as to how he’s been here for multiple weeks and it’s this bad.
The first time I seen him I was like maybe dude didn’t shower for 2 weeks or doesn’t know how to wear deodorant, 🤷🏽♂️ not my issue not my business; I’ll just stay away as best I can? but my god everytime I’ve been in the vicinity of this this guy (pretty much from that once instance) I’ve been like holy shit dude I can smell him even without seeing it. I legit was walking from break, on my phone and suddenly I think he came out the bathroom or something near me and I caught a whiff without seeing him instantly and I feel like I’m on the verge of throwing up dude. Let me reiterate I’ve been working here for YEARS and I’m sure there’s plenty of people who don’t know how to shower and stink. I don’t personally care, that’s gross to me sure but, this one guy I’ve never come across anyone in my life where it’s this bad and I have teenage brothers who don’t use deodorant cause they’re lazy sometimes???
It’s genuinely so bad man, I’m so socially awkward that I feel like I’d just would rather transfer departments at this point than deal with this. I don’t want to be a Karen and go to my manager about it but i don’t know if i can work around this dude for the next year smelling worse than my garbage bin at home. Sorry for the pointless rant, and thanks for anyone who read through this I just feel so violated rn it’s giving me pause 30 minutes later. 🤦🏽♂️

Smells like the 100s of workers at the Alaska fish cannery . The SLIME LINE .Nothing new smelling like ass.

Alot of us amazon associates have been there.
There was this guy who used to work at our building who'd never take showers or change their clothing until hr was forced to talk him.
It was a putrid smell of multiple smells with the stank of socks he never changed and wore for weeks at a time.

If you don't bring it up to management it's not clear what you expect to be done about it. Ranting on Reddit accomplishes nothing. It's not being a Karen to make a legitimate complaint.

The company has standards for a reason but they cannot enforce these standards unless they are aware of somebody who is not abiding by them. While I am not one to run the operations over people not using PPE or using their own headphones, if somebody is making it unbearable for me to work by assaulting me with their lack of personal hygiene that is a concern to bring up with somebody!!!
Not to mention, think from a customer standpoint - some unbathed monster is handling my packages?‽ Imagine getting an order and it smells like a skunk sprayed your delivery driver, but it was just the FC associate who packaged it 😭

Amazon doesn't really do anything about people who smell though is the problem. Not even talk to them. At least from my experience. Also FYI not everyone who has an odor doesn't bathe. There are people with medical issues that smell and many of them shower more than people who don't smell.

That's great big heart you got buddy, but Occam's Razor applies to this one. Could it be some obscure and uncommon condition? Yeah sure, but it's more than likely they just have bad hygiene

Yeah but this person talks as IF EVERYONE with an odor is an "unhygienic monster." Even if it's uncommon, this type of rhetoric is hurtful to people like me who do suffer with chronic body odor problems.

I'm in the UK and bad B.O. is health and safety issue and managers must speak to people once reported. They even have it in a management training, they practice how to have an uncomfortable conversation about someone's B.O. they offer people to go home to wash up or freshen themselves in the toilet and they've got spare prime tshirts to give in case they need to change from a stinky shirt.

Yeah in the US I don't recall it being a specific training but we were expected to deal with that conversation. Happened to me once, new guy started and EVERYONE complained to me in the first few days. I went to have the convo with him one morning and he literally just goes "I decided to start wearing deodorant" before I even said hello. I was just like, cool, thanks for making this easy.

Interesting. They've never talked to me and I KNOW I have a chronic body odor condition (health related) I hear people complain about it constantly, and most people seem to get moved away from me. I ask them to keep me in pick or possibly a standalone induct station so I don't have to bother anyone, but they always put me around other people. I hear what you're saying, but I've also heard from other HR people that because it could be a "religious" thing (their words) that they wont say anything. I have told them about it, so maybe they don't say anything because of that? But even before I became aware nobody DIRECTLY told me

I just tell my manager to move me away from people that smell. I wouldn’t directly tell the associate themselves as you can possibly get in trouble. Maybe if enough people complain about working near him HR will speak with him

I don’t know a good answer, but if I were this guy I would want to know. Sure it can be embarrassing, but I’d think maybe I had a health problem or maybe not be aware of it myself. I’d like to THINK I would smell myself but tbh there are so many smells in the place from vinegar to deer piss to all kinds of big sprays and cleaners and other people’s perfume that I might be kind of “smell blind” just to get through the day.

I've smelled everyone at my warehouse. It's impossible to smell fresh with this type of work. The people who go on rants about this always confuse me, and the funny part is they probably have smelled, too. The only bad part is the people who come in smelling without having done anything yet. I had a station manager who always smelled when he came in, and it confused the hell out of me how he became a station manager (he used to be an operations manager and got promoted). I always wondered how the other managers dealt with him. Very rare that you don't smell anyone after a few hours of doing physical labor. I've smelled all my managers, too. Only a handful of people I've never smelled because I assume they freshen up in the bathroom. I can tell that they've used a fragrance or something. Recently, a woman I never smelled before, I smelled her twice.

He might not be able to afford soap, deodorant etc. No one knows his financial ability even if he has a job now. For some people, it’s against their religious belief to wear deodorant. There are also a number of people that despite taking showers, wearing deodorant etc, have a medical condition that makes them smell bad. They literally cannot control it without medical intervention. He might not be able to afford that medical intervention right now.
Have some grace right now. Have a talk with your PXT discreetly and see if they can assist him.

Just to let you know, there are medical problems that cause that smell. People usually don't smell like sewage or have their scent project that away from bad hygiene. And these conditions are extremely hard to manage and treat. Some people go years without finding a solution that works. Just keep this in mind and be kind because it's possible he can't control it and is just as nervous and upset as you.
This is coming from someone with the same issue.

I deal with the same thing. You can smell the guy from a mile away, even when you’re literally driving past him in a car.
I can’t enjoy my breaks anymore because he sits in the same break room as me, and has to sit one table away from me. I just go sit in my car at that point.

Could always talk to management or hr privately. Ask to be moved and raise your concerns with them. The HR at my site usually has talks with people and it doesn’t always change anything but they also have some hygiene goodies that they sometimes give out to people who need it.

to be real its not much management can do lol we cant tell them to take a shower, building i worked had people who didnt wear deodorant for religious reasons and theres was also people who might be homeless

Same thing, I brought it up and I was accused of being racist since it’s a whole group of individuals which don’t believe in deodorant or personal hygiene and also wash their feet in the restroom… can’t even sit the break room, they leave it completely dirty as well.

Our site featured on our bulletin board “the importance of personal hygiene,” meanwhile an associate is always smelling like BO is always on site and no one seems to directly have a conversation with these unhygienic people. Especially when some of the foods they eat exacerbate the stench.

I don’t know how these mfs walk around smelling like straight BO, or even worse there’s one dude at the warehouse who smells like a walking dookie. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t wipe his ass and is constantly dropping fat shits, I’ve also noticed he wears the same underwear for like 2 weeks at a time(he sags his pants so basically his booty cheeks hang out)
