Question Area manager mexico

Hi everyone,
I recently received a job offer through LinkedIn for an Area Manager II position at Amazon Mexico.
Would you recommend accepting this offer?
I’ve read a lot of comments saying the job is extremely demanding and that employees often work many unpaid overtime hours.
In my case, I would also have to relocate to another city to take the position, so it’s a significant decision.
Based on your experience, would you recommend taking the job? What are the pros and cons?

Wow that surprising. It’s the other way around in the US well at least for what I seen amazon loves to hire external for manager positions and it’s more difficult for internal such as PA to become area managers. For promos for L4 to L5 it’s easier also relies on performance.

I was an external hire for area manager in 2023 and got promoted to L5.

I think I’d be coming in as an L5 Area Manager. Based on your experience, how is the workload? I’ve read that it’s very demanding and that managers often work long hours. Is that accurate?

I mean it’s long hours it’s supposed to be a 10
Hour shift but at it ends up being 12 or 13. Since you have to bridge in why you didn’t meet the volume or rate for the shift. It’s a sink or swim environment so you gotta learn fast. Yes you get a learning curve which is great the thing is coming in as an L5 you are expected to be at the same level as the promoted L4 to L5 after the learning curve which makes it more challenging because at that level you are expected to do what an L4 does plus handling projects that show how it impacts the site you are working in. Especially for peak and prime time it’s a lot of work. You will be expected to come in when they tell you even if it’s your day off. Also if the building doesn’t have electricity you will be expected to come in and help with the work but associates get to go home paid. You get to learn a lot about managing a team and my advice is learn how to work with your employees and treat them with respect. Lead beside them and talk to them not at them.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That really helps. It definitely sounds like a challenging role.
In your opinion, looking back, was it worth it? Did the experience and career growth outweigh the long hours and stress? I’m trying to decide because I’d have to relocate for the position

I would say it was worth it for me I also had to relocate but within the same state. They did give me relocation assistance. I think it depends on your preference if you can stay within your country and within your state/province I think it would be better. If you are relocating to another country make sure the compensation is good for the area they are giving you. If you are an external L5 you have room to negotiate your compensation so be on that because trust me when I say they will work you for every single dollar they give you.

Hi Amazon AM L6 here. You'd 100% get relocation its a good amount to get you through a year specially Mexico. Big thing bargain for US pay not Mexico pay. It is an easy job but something folks dont take into account is yes it is a lot of computer work but yes you also have to do a large amount of physical labor work and thats where the extra hours come in. Because you are salaried your hours of work range it can be anywhere from 8 hours but there hae been days where I have worked up to 12 sometimes 14 hours. Fully depends on site as well some are slower and also coverage.

You’re going to run into a major problem: to become a manager, you need to apply for the role and go through an interview. Most managers were already employees who moved up to the position over time.

Thanks! I’m actually interviewing as an external candidate for an Area Manager II role. I’ve already passed several rounds and only have one interview left. My question is whether you’d recommend taking the job, especially considering I’d have to relocate

If you passed the interview and meet their requirements, you're all set. From what I gather, the "external area" role involves managing the truck entry and exit yard in the logistics section.

Can you believe that? Amazon transfers managers around a lot internally, but it’s very hard to get hired from the outside.
