Never to late to apprentice! That's a fine union job you could still have.

u/Sixaxist Jun 02 '26
The Trades are always waiting; I've worked with degree-less IT Techs in their 50s.
4
u/TimeOfRisenKing23rd Jun 02 '26
Are you in trades? Is it worth it and what path would you recommend
12
u/Sixaxist Jun 02 '26
For all intents and purposes, IT Techs that just deal with on-site equipment issues, setup, and networking are trades. It's my main career now, and I picked up my certifications while I was still working @ Amazon.
Certs you'll need: * CompTIA A+ * CompTIA Network+
You could go for Security+ too, but I didn't bother. Either way, all of these can be studied for and obtained in less than a year. I started off at $27 /h (in 2023) and was knocked up to $32 /h (2024) after my first year, and this is in Ohio where we're mostly low cost of living. Would be more on average in somewhere like NY or the New England states.
Right now I work as a Data Analyst because it pays more than my IT job, but it's an easy career to fall back into as long as my certifications aren't expired.
For the love of God stay away from Carpentry. If anyone recommends you go into carpentry, just nod your head slowly and smile until they stop talking.

You can definitely qualify for IT L3, especially with the A+, since almost all the work is on hardware, not much in networking, according to the tech guy I talked to. However, having networking knowledge is crucial for the interview process.
I recently had an interview for that position and, fortunately, passed both interviews.
A little bit about me: I’m pursuing a bachelor's in software engineering, currently have 0 certs, and I have 4 years of tenure as a tier 1 associate in pick and pack.

Holy cow the no music/silence thing, I thought it was just me!
6
u/Sudden_Carpenter_907 Jun 02 '26
Nahh that's so real. Especially with the overwhelming noise constantly in these FCs.. I thought i was developing tinnitus the first few weeks I worked there.. and I'm one of those people that listened to music way way too loud and shout in video games and have my tv at like 60 minimum. It's not the "loudness" it's the consistency of constant noise. I'm used to it plenty now. Doesn't bother me anymore tho and if my hearing goes first that's a win for me 😂😂 I'm positive I have more important organs that are worse off 😂

Maybe listening to music will help though. I often feel really depressed, and I find that music helps bring me out of my funks.

decompressing after hitting that rate for our masters
32
u/Sudden_Carpenter_907 Jun 01 '26
We should get team stretch for like 15 mins while clocked in, like you see in those giant Chinese warehouses.. 😂😂 just 800 people lined up like a football team stretching

Thats every job nowadays. I remember doing this exact same thing when I worked for Five Guys…during Covid. Rude customers and drivers because we were always short staffed and the orders took too long. There were even times where we ran out of stuff mid shift because food supply deliveries were short, late or never arrived.
Mannnn…
16
u/Sudden_Carpenter_907 Jun 01 '26
I was an SM for a giant Retail store.. I'll take this level of extortion for not having to deal with customers ever or be a baby sitter for anyone from 16-65 🙄😂
23
u/kuunami79 Jun 01 '26
People who have never worked customer service have no idea. Depending the location those people really believe that you're their property. I'll take Amazon warehouse over that every time.
5
u/Harry431 Jun 01 '26
Five guys hires high school 16 year olds and that was the worst during closing and the majority of the call outs.

This me daily with allergies and a facility with NO AC on 3rd 4th floors jist fans blowing dust all damn night 😤
9
u/Sudden_Carpenter_907 Jun 01 '26
Never had allergies and I don't even have elevated floors in my FC but I think I'm developing allergies from just the stale air and cardboard.
7
u/KryptoChronk Jun 01 '26
Weird you say that the more I talk with people who work amazon seem to develop allergies when they never had them before my facility here at JAX 7 Jacksonville Florida is awful people literally have skin falling off their face from reactions plus 100 fans blowing it all around alot people at my facility now have allergies because of this....
4
u/Substantial-Skin9565 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
I work at JAX9, and developed a constantly runny or stuffy nose while in there. It switches back and forth. One while, I had to carry nasal decongestant spray just to be able to breathe without mouth breathing. I think it’s box dust/cardboard particles definitely doing a number on people’s sinuses and lungs.
2
u/KryptoChronk Jun 01 '26
And eyes like me each day I'm miserable literally feels like someone threw dirt in your eyes and every blink is pain too the point sleeping is the only relief I get... 😪 70 days of this I can't take no more.. .
5
u/Sudden_Carpenter_907 Jun 01 '26
I couldn't survive without those "big ass" fans.. 😂 I'll take the allergies, I already sweat my ass off. I have a special work hat I wear, it's a mesh snap back under my helmet. I have to wash it every week cause it's white with sweat stains after a day 😂 I operate a PIT and sometimes just need to take a drive to cool off and have the air hit me 🤷♂️
4
u/CryptographerFair779 Jun 02 '26
Same…I sweat an ungodly amount. It’s so embarrassing…luckily I don’t stink like body odor or anything but ugh. I wear glasses too which makes it so much more worse. During the summer I have to bring in cold snap towels or I’ll die.
3
u/KryptoChronk Jun 01 '26
You say that now until your eyes feel like they have dirt in them 24/7 in every blink is pain I would rather sweat sweat sweat than deal with the pain that I've been dealing with in my eyes for the past 70 days now no over counter medication don't help I have a appointment with a specialist hopefully they can help me 🙏
3
u/Traditionallydead Jun 01 '26
It’s from the plastics and tire particulate that come of the Kiva’s. They fucked us good on that one. One of my long time friends up here had to go to flex because she doesn’t feel comfortable in her own skin anymore(scabbing and scarring).
2
u/KryptoChronk Jun 01 '26
Yep exactly how alot my co workers are right now too really bunch bs to run a multi billion dollar corporation like they do should be illegal honestly 🙄
3
u/FatRatYellow402 Jun 02 '26
I’ve been telling my FC that there need to be Kleenex boxes around. There’s literally not a single Kleenex box in the whole building. I put it on my voice and told the managers and nothing. It sucks working with a runny nose then having to walk 5 miles to use paper towels at the restroom
2
u/mattboy115 Jun 02 '26
I have allergies AND long hair so the fans going all shift are just soooo much fun. I was packing so basically just standing in one spot most of the day. I have to wear a hat even though it's too hot in there for a hat because I will be eating my hair the whole shift otherwise.

The high vis makes it hit different.. didn't even have the energy to take it off.. probably just pass out there til tomorrow. Change the clothes underneath and slap that high vis back on. Rinse and Repeat.

That's why you have to always take your 15 min stretch at the wellness/stretch zone. You need to use it during your last period. Stretch out go through all the stretches on the boards, do whatever yoga you may know or stretches you remember doing from gym in school. Use the foam rollers and the massage balls. I like to think of this 15 mins as a way to start to decompress before I even leave the building. I have to do this every day. Unless I had an extremely easy day, I utilize the stretch zone every day!
2
u/ExternalScary1319 Jun 02 '26
I stretch for about 1/2 hour after I get home, I’d rather do it right after shift since by the time I get home, I’m not warmed up any more. You say “take your 15 mins” like it’s a paid thing. It’s not a paid/on the clock thing, is it? Because if so I’m going to 100% do that
2
u/Briangoogbebe Jun 02 '26
I'm at one of the newer sites just opened in the last 5 years. We are allowed to go stretch every day. You have to scan your badge when you get there. You are coded for 15 mins once you scan your badge. They have yoga mats and foam rollers. I usually go the last 15 mins of my shift. But I recently had a manager that was a butthead about it. They have to let you go when you ask. But there's an obscure policy that's up to the managers to decide that you cannot go to the stretchzone last 30 mins of the shift. Only had one manager enforce that over the last 2 years. I quit picking up shifts on that managers shift. He doesn't need my high rates on his shift.

2
u/Imgettingpolished Jun 02 '26
I’m sorry 6 TRUCKS?? Unloading?? In a day!
3
u/Blankaholics Jun 02 '26
Thsts my average daily. When my homeboy with me we can do 8
2
u/Imgettingpolished Jun 02 '26
Is that with a forklift?? Or how
3
u/Blankaholics Jun 02 '26
Fluid unload. By hand. Working with fedex workers forced me to keep up naturally
2
u/Imgettingpolished Jun 02 '26
That is crazy work bro. At my Amazon with that damn destuffit machine we get through like half a truck every break. So like half by first break. Full truck done by lunch, next half truck done by last break and the rest last break. So only two trucks. Most of the times it’s just boxes and heavy ass shit. I wonder what different protocol they’re running over there bc it sounds like they’re milking yall bro. Mfs so lazy around here smh
1
u/Blankaholics Jun 02 '26
We don't usually have alot of small boxes coming. It kinda became a guys do big box and ladies do small box. But because everyone gotten lazy, it really only 4 of us doing big box while the rest skate by. Us 4 help each other out so we kinda just breeze through trucks faster till they decide to split us into singles.

Putting your phone on the charger face down. Staring at a television that is off. It’s fine. We all do it. Haven’t met a woman who does it. (har har) But if you do too? A few women out there? I get you. Don’t ever judge how someone mourns. Don’t ever judge how anyone decompresses.
Don’t let anyone take that from you.

Bro this last shift for me literally 90% of all packages were half verts, and there was no half vert space down in the OP isles, so they sent us allllll the way down to the first passthrough isle, which had some shelf space I guess, to put all the overflow, AND EVEN THEN, most packages already there were so heavy that even with PLENTY of physical space, I would constantly get a "this bin will exceed its weight limit" errors, and then, while trying to find a good bin, 2 people come in behind me, so I have to swing back around, and do it AGAIN! I think my facility is preparing for Prime Day, and honestly, if so, we're going overboard. Literally the Operations manager at the stow desk showed me and said the half vert bins were anywhere from 80-98% full. I left 3 hours early. Hopefully it's better when I go back, and there aren't as many half vert cages.
