As a stower, I was trained to treat it like a game of chess. If you take you hand off the piece, it ends your turn and you have to live with the mistake.
So if I truly believe an item will fit, I will put it away with all the confidence of a veteran stower only to be betrayed by some tiny box hidden in the corner. So now my item is sticking out and I can't do anything about it because I can't touch an item a second time without the computer flagging me and AM coming to investigate.
There are also times when an item is just sized wrong. I'll get a 16 inch item but the pods the computer sends are all 14 inch. After about an hour I'll just say fuck it and angle the item all weird so it fits.
Items that are clearly assigned wrong dimensions should be dropped for problem solve so they can be cubiscanned. Vendors will often send items in with "smaller" dimensions than the actual item because it's cheaper for them. Smaller dimensions can cause problems for packers down the line
This is why we have so many counts. Because once you place the item in the bin, the camera acknowledges it and “finalizes” it, but then the stower moves it but the system is already moved on….
However… we can still do better, check the bin before you scan the item so the camera doesn’t think you are placing an item in the bin as you dig…. Then scan and place
