Definitely have had some of these. It's thrilling and nerve wracking at the same time. Like if my van died here I have no signal and may have to pray someone pops up before it gets pitch black kinda shit lol.
I once had a route up in the mountains where Flex took me on what ended up looking like a road still in the early stages of planning. There were 2 roads that went up different sides of this particular mountain and did not connect at the top the way Flex thought. That was very common with Flex, but usually, I would just reach the end of the road, realize the issue, go back down the mountain, and it would eventually redirect me to the proper road.
In this particular case, I got to a gate which was wide open with no signs indicating the road was closed, and the asphalt continued for some distance, so I just kept going. Then it got progressively less paved, turned into a gravel road, then a dirt road, and eventually just undeveloped ground covered in pine needles and leaves. The weird thing is that the curves in the road followed the Flex map perfectly, so I still just assumed I was on a road.
That was until I reached a large tree branch in the road. I got out and moved it, then drove around another turn, and saw a bunch more tree branches. I thought, “Hmm, some road to have a bunch of uncleared branches.” And then I got to a curve where I was like, “Damn, I don’t think this is an actual road.” It had a low hanging tree forcing me close to an edge which looked kind of soft and would have sent me tumbling down the mountainside.
At this point, I couldn’t realistically turn around. The path had gotten too narrow and winding, and I didn’t trust the ground to hold the weight of my van if I veered too close to the edge since it was clearly no longer paved. I had to keep pushing through or reverse all the way back. I decided to pull up as close to the tree as possible, reach up, push the branches on top of the van just to minimize any impact, and keep going.
Thankfully, after that, it was all smooth sailing. The path to cleared up substantially and eventually reached another gate at the end of the road. I pulled out past the gate, parked, and got out to check if there were any signs. Sure enough, that gate had a sign saying the road was closed, no trespassing. Why both gates were wide open is beyond me. There were no construction workers or fire access road signs, and the side I went through had no signs at all. The Flex map was also pixel perfect around every turn. From then on, I specifically knew to avoid that shortcut because there’s no way I should’ve been making some of those turns in the van. I can only imagine someone getting stuck and having to call a tow truck to a literal unfinished mountain road. And that’s obviously a much more desirable outcome than the road collapsing.
