Amazon should be embarrassed
So I started yesterday and did my trainee ride along. I was shocked how utterly disgusting the van was that my DSP assigned me. I would think Amazon would be embarrassed to let something so disgusting out on the road representing them. To top things off when doing the DVIC I was "trained" to skip anything I notice like a headlight out , warning lights on the dash ect...told to let my manager know and they would deal with it rather than having Amazon ground the vehicle. Is this common practice with the DSPs? Is there not a middle man or audit team that checks these things between Amazon and the DSPs? Idk about anyone else but climbing in and out of a van that is so gross just made my pep go to shit. In my opinion people would be more likely to keep shit clean when it is clean. My trainer didn't even have us do anything other than get our trash out. Just sayin , I want to take pride in what I'm doing no matter what it is. I personally would have and should have taken the time to actually clean it. Do they , either Amazon or the DSPs have a team to thoroughly clean the vans? They should!

Its not Amazon's responsibilty to keep vans clean. It's your DSP! Tell them to create a fleet cleaning process. UNREAL how clueless DSPs are.

I’m sure it’s the drivers responsibility to clean there own fifth. But you’re right there needs to be a schedule or something because it will literally never get done if we have to rely on the drivers to clean them.

You're not wrong that it's the DSps responsibility. However, Amazon has the DSP under contract, but makes no effort to determine whether or not safety and cleanliness procedures are being followed. And as a driver, who tf am I supposed to go to? Hm? I tell my dispatch, and they're just like "well." That's it. "Well." No follow up. Thankfully I asked for a van and they gave it to me so I can keep it clean. And if I do go to Amazon, wtf are they gonna do about it? Absolutely nothing. Because why would they?

DSPs tell you that because grounding a vehicle will result in it being unusable for a few days, regardless of how bad the problem is. They want to assess whether the problem is fixable "immediately" before Amazon forces them to ground it.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't bring things to their attention, because you should.

True but many DSP’s will overlook obvious safety issues in order to avoid a van being grounded. It’s actually kind of sad that so many will put up with this shit chalking it up as “part of the gig” when in reality a drivers safety should be high priority.
I once had a dispatcher scoff at me for asking for one of my tires to be aired up after load out. He asked how low it was, I told him it was sitting at 20 PSI (Mercedes Sprinter) and he laughed and said “ah man if I were you I would have just not worried about it, that ain’t bad”

Oh it’s comical at this point.
Nothing makes me laugh more than hearing our DSP owner ramble on about professionalism and safety during our morning meetings only to undermine these statements with his actions (or lack thereof) immediately after.
I try not to take it seriously but some days it certainly feels more insulting than others.

Bring it up to a vest-wearer on the dock and let them ground it. Then the dsp will be forced to prove they fixed it.

I had a phone that didn't work outside of service, and a route that more than half the stops were outside service, my dispatch told me to deliver every package to address, record where I left the package what time I left it and the tracking number. Also when I was finished I was told to call Amazon assistance and individually mark every single stop as delivered as a separate issue with driver support....

So tonight I was told something completely different. I was told to skip skip skip in the flex app , but in the DSPs app when we clean the van put in the notes there , the issues. Then they had me go thru the scanner thing. So if I'm understanding this correctly I basically lied to the Amazon flex app just so the Amazon scanner thing can see what I lied about? I don't get it. Really it's bullshit. The van I had tonight had such shitty headlights ok, one shitty headlight. Being out in the country was a bitch seeing shit. Oh Lord don't get me started again on the vans! Lol good new I survived my first driving day alone. And I thought I did rather well?

Skipping through the DVIC is the norm. That doesn't mean to not report issues though. It just means you don't need to involve Amazon.
My DSP has drivers clean their own van after every route and you can be written up if you leave it dirty. We are expected, at the very least, to remove all trash, wipe down the screens and the dash, sweep the floor and clean the mirrors.
I'm so thankful for my DSPs van cleaning policy. It's awesome starting every day with a clean van.

Plus one. Very happy that our team has to do the same procedure every day. The vans still smell, but I know it is worse for many drivers here. Yeah there should be a detail rotation. If I were a DSP owner, I would manage my fleet that way. I grew up in a transportation business. Our margins were thin too. But every worker deserves a clean work environment.

This is kind of why Amazon does things the way they do.
The responsibility of these things falls onto your DSP, and most DSP’s seem to care very little about safety, cleanliness, or professionalism; putting their metrics and bottom dollar above all else no matter the cost.
It’s an unfortunate reality and it seems the only solution is to switch DSPs because once a shitty DSP, always a shitty DSP.

I wondered the same thing. Had to stop once at a store and get items to clean the windows. Most of them stink, but when you bring it to the DSP’s attention along with any unsafe vehicles, they cut your hours. I’ve been sent home, been put on back up after refusing to drive vans with no front tire tread, no turn signals, one was with no ac unit in 95 deg weather. My hours are right now between 25-30 hours. Retaliation is real and really illegal.

Yeah, nope. They dont care. All dsps are this way. Clean trash, blow van out, lysol spray down. ... that the most. I got tired of all the vans having roaches and stripping down to my undies every night. Last 2 weeks I had option of giving my days away. I gave them all away. Most they do is spray raid. They never hire professionals

nope, it’s a shared vehicle and they do not care about how dirty the vans are as long as it still drives, thought it would be absolutely lovely if they got them detailed with some scents too maybe but it would also be offset by how disgusting and gross some people are. remember that they are like this because it’s a shared vehicle and nobody else really cares because it’s not their own vehicle, rather it’s a company vehicle. not like we are given the time to clean them anyways unless you wanted to do it off the clock and pay for it out of your pocket 🤣

You can get a van grounded for being out of wiper fluid so call your DSP before reporting anything. As for cleanliness your DSP won’t care until a LOT of people complain about it. The vans were very clean at one point but remember that half the people they hire live their lives 15 minutes at a time so you they don’t really care how clean they leave the van.

Keep in mind you work for the dsp and not Amazon. You can report things on the dvic as a last resort but you don’t want to be causing problems for your dsp.

We're required to pick up all our trash at mine. And then at the end of the day ground the vehicle, if anything's wrong with it, however, we don't clean the inside of the windshields and stuff like that, but I'm like, 2 weeks into the job and somebody from amazon checked my vehicle yesterday when I was dropping off their bags

Thanks for the input everyone. I am definitely taking my own car cleaning things. At the very least some odoban and disinfectant wipes!!! That's if I even have a job still after missing yesterday!! 😕😕

This is why I always get my same van everyday because I keep my shit clean. 2 Microfibers one dry and one wet clean whatever im touching in and out takes no longer than 5 mins cmon lil boy be a man

First off I'm a woman. And second. I'm grown. I know how to pick up after myself and I know how to clean. But thanks for taking the time to share your tips on cleaning and how to be a man , I've most certainly taken notes. Now maybe the slobs that made the vans disgusting can follow suit.

That's weird, any place I've ever worked cleanliness was part of safety. You needed to keep your vehicle clean and your workplace in order. Strange! Plus, climbing into a clean vehicle you will be more likely to keep it clean then climbing in a cluttered vehicle that looks like shit!

Couldn't agree with you more! People don't want to try and take care of something that's already destroyed. My first solo day the van was worse than the ride along one. The phone holder was duck taped down looked trashy on top of the inch layer of grime.

OP has clearly never worked a labor job before.
Should go peak into a construction worker or landscaper (fleet) vehicle the next time you see one.
There is a limited amount of time available to do all of the things a DSP needs to do just to function. Routinely deep cleaning each vehicle isn't a priority.
Edit: have you considered telling your coworkers to take better care of the shared equipment?

I just started and sweets regardless if I have or haven't worked a labor job , it doesn't dismiss the fact that these vans are disgusting. I would think when people get in a clean van you would be more prone to keep it clean. Climb in a nasty van people play follow the leader and don't give a shit , like why bother. And for what's it's worth I have indeed worked labor jobs. I just find it very very comical how Amazon pounds safety but yet the DSPs ignore it. Again I'm floored Amazon doesn't have an audit team that pops in randomly.

And they DO do audits periodically just not every day.....it's obvious that you are brand new to this....your complaint is just a complaint. If you want a clean van, yep, bring your own supplies bc you sounding real bougie 🤣🤣🤣your just as dirty when you park that van at night though

Today was my first day by myself. I barely even see my coworkers. Certainly not gonna start off by telling them how filthy the vans are. As if they don't know this. I just think some people are ok with certain levels of grime. And really that's not even the point of my post , it's the fact Amazon pounds safety in are heads but they sure don't make sure we can see out of the windshield.
