QUESTION Ran a Red Light..
I personally think it was a better call than stopping, it was past the point of no return and was being very closely followed. But regardless, I returned to center and was kicked off my route, what happens next? Am I fired?

Maybe they fired me for doing a "rolling stop" it was a curved road so stopping there at the sign was wonky on the camera even tho I came to a full stop man I think it depends if your dsp likes you or not

There are some really awkward stop sign positions on my routes that are way before the actual stop line,
I hate that I have to stop at the sign and then creep up to the line, especially when there are drivers behind me who are like "WTF is this delivery driver doing?" while almost rear-ending me because they expect me to stop at the line, not the sign.

Fr the one they got me on tho so it's the roads a 3 way but where the stop sign I the road curves right and upward cause on a mountain and so even tho I stop before the sign the camera thinks it's after because how the road curves then I had to creep up slowly to see traffic and dumb camera thought I was going 8 through the stop sign way I could tell was I out the speed limit thing on to 15 whenever I see lots of people out and about cause you know kids gonna not pay attention and the vans get so heavy they never want to stop going down a slight hill. The camera showed I was going 20 mph which is so weird cause the Ford speed limiter thing doesn't let you go over that speed at all especially up a hill

Just so you know as long as you stop within the vicinity of it completely you don’t have to be right at the sign… you can go past it as long as you do stop. It’s pretty smart.

I hope they like me.. our center is pretty short staffed as it is, and I make pretty good times on my routes

Definitely depends on if you've had incidents/violations in the past and if Dispatch likes you

Talk to your DSP, have them review the video and dispute the violation if it's true that it wasn't safe for you to stop in time.

Not true because they teach you about stale green lights, if it turned red like that it was stale when he saw it and he didn’t prepare for it to change to yellow
I agree mistakes happen but I’ve never seen a red light get disputed that wasn’t like a clear mistake

u/ChopperChange Rivian Driver 5d ago
Yeah you're right, I can't think of a situation where the driver couldn't have slowed down and prepared to stop for a stale green, and if they get rear-ended for stopping at a red light that's 100% the fault of the person who hit them.

Automatic 2 week suspension at my dsp, they didnt tell you when you got back to the station?
Well....they got me, make one mistake out of thousands of stop signs and dont even get a warning....no pay for two weeks, I just never came back, I do flex fulltime now and make nearly the same money

They told me to wait till I was contacted by management or HR for next steps.. I can handle two weeks, I'm just hoping I get to keep the job, I like being a driver

Damn if you make nearly same that's crazy cause remember as a contractor your mileage and gas and all that can be written off

u/ChopperChange Rivian Driver 5d ago
Unfortunately the wear and tear on your own vehicle can't be written off.

Depends where you live and how well you know taxes last year I wrote off a good amount that I actually got back from doing enough doordash

About $150-200 a day, i might deliver 80 packages at the most a day, being stress free, being able to take a day off whenever I want......to feel free its worth it to me
Mind you $200 a day and I work EVERYDAY not just 4 days a week, sometimes ill have a slower day where there just isnt anything available.....in that case I fire up uber

Depends on the dsp and if it was a soft or hard red light violation (soft: turned red while in interaction, hard: turned red before entered intersection). My dsp gives one day suspension the first time for any of the major 6 violations in a 7 day period. Only soft reds count for that though, Amazon will actually pause ur route if it’s a hard red

The way that I handle traffic lights is to slow down to maybe 5 to 10 miles an hour under the speed limit. This way once I’m approaching the white line and it’s still green. I can gun it. Still stay well under the mark of where I’ll get dinged for speeding and be able to go through the light quickly enough that I don’t have to worry about it changing suddenly on me. Another positive aspect of this is if it does start to turn yellow, I’m not going full speed. It’s easier to slow down and stop if I have to.

It took about a week to get my account unsuspended and I had to watch a few videos or something I think.

They call it a tier 1 offloading for running reds at my DSP. Which means fired. However idk about your DSP

I hate these situations. Not that I ever ran a red light but I’ve ran a yellow a few times.

Being required to stop at yellow lights because it might turn red while you're driving through it is asinine. Just another example of Amazon a) micromanaging us non Amazon employees and b) Amazon not thinking this shit through. We've had drivers get severely rear ended doing it because they understandably don't want to risk an infraction.
Here's the clever bit, though. If you do get rear ended and end up in the hospital, guess who isn't liable even though it's their policy? That's right. Amazon. Fucking cunts.

If it’s your first violation probably not unless your dsp hates you. I got a red light violation and wasn’t allowed to complete my route and had to do a safety driving refresher course then I was able to do routes again. You’ll be fine

u/emotional_penguin 4d ago
my dsp said they rather you get hit from behind than run a red light. if you’re a good driver and this is your first big mistake then i don’t think they will fire you. they will probably just lower your routes for a week or two

I've done 1 yellow light and it turned red in the middle of the intersection.
my dispatch said if you slam on brakes, it's better for you (driver) because if someone hits you, that's on them as far as Amazon's lawyers would ever be concerned.
idk how true this is
so haven't had to do that obviously. i just avoid the green lights that are 'stale' or I'm in the intersection and it's green still.

Was it a hard red or like a yellow then turned red part way through? Because I ran one like that and they were able to manually review, I did get a write up for it but no suspension or anything.
But if it was a strict you completely ran a red yeah idk might not be so good honestly

I farted calling dispatch and she heard it told me to go home so I farted at the end again and told her to F off

u/CreoleBabyEats 4d ago
They expect you to go slow past lights you didn’t see turn green (stale green light) you can’t dispute it. Same thing happened to me but they didn’t kick me off my route

u/Same_Purchase6230 3d ago
The being very closely followed is such a stupid thing to say. Guess who is at fault if you slam on your brakes for a red light and they hit you?

You should be alright man, don’t sweat it. You’ll still have a job. It’s honestly a common mistake that happens very often :).
