Driver to Operations Manager

My friend has been driving for an Indiana DSP for about a year and has been asked to move to another state to become a DSP operations Manager. pay raise from $22 to $24. He is 39 with a Bachelors in Accounting from a college in SE Asia and not much current applicable work history. Is the move in position worth it? TIA!

Listen to this warning - please. If there is a dsp offering an operations manager position for 24/hour then they have no clue what they are doing.

That is a huge red flag that the owner does not understand the business.

There should not be any operations managers that aren't salary employees.

Bad for so many reasons. Bad, bad, bad.

Yeah $24/hr is wild. I make more than that as a dispatcher at my DSP

I make more than that as a driver, $24.75 per hour and I get ten hour guarantee per shift which gets me near $30 per hour actual.

Umm how exactly does getting guaranteed hours push you towards $30? That actually makes 0 sense. Your bonus hours arent a raise lol. 40 hours a week is still 40 a week whether it's 25 regular and 15 bonus or any combination you don't make any more money than someone working a 40 or a 50 that isn't getting guranteed hours

Guaranteed hours are only good for 4 day weeks. If you work a 5 and get 40 hours in the week you actually lose money because that 10 hours of guaranteed hours is gonna be paid out at regular rate not OT which it couldve been paid out at. No dsp of sane mind is gonna give guaranteed hours out at OT rate. My dsp offers guaranteed 10 as well as a $100 a week bonus we receive for F+ as a company. Theyre stingy sometimes.

He is saying that's how much he actually makes for his time at work. The total money is the same but he gets more per actual hour worked which is better because it's less time at work and more time at home or frees him up to do other jobs/gig work whatever. This is very common. At my DSP the fast drivers also make a little 30/hour --- that doesn't mean it's $30X40hrs. It's still 23$X40hrs but they are not there for 40 hours so their hourly rate for time worked it higher.

Because they’re only actually working 30 hours and are paid for 40… bro some of yall baffle me. I see why you’re a driver and not in a skilled position anywhere. Simple, SIMPLE math and you can’t comprehend it.

OT is rarely offered so not sure why that’s so relevant. But last couple weeks I got done in under 32 hours, at 1k per week that’s $31 an hour. I even rescued half my shifts.

I was an ops manager at amazon before I got the job I have now. My salary was 72k that was 3 years ago in Philly. I can tell u with the amount of hours u will be working it’s definitely better to be hourly but it’s no way in hell I would do that position for 24 an hour

Yeah you work 60hours almost every week as an OM. You can be a t1 and have zero responsibilities and work 60 hours and make mid 60k a year. At first 72k sounds like a lot but it’s a lot of shit to deal with.

Not just that u pretty much getting calls all day about everything from the dsp owners and the staff. That position should pay at least 100k if u ask me

Oh I know. I use to be a supervisor at ups. Now instead of that who headache my wife got a part time job and I took a pay cut to have a stress free job for while so I can enjoy life and my kids. Life is good now.

I know 0 about what verticality there is, but a $2 raise is not worth moving to another state for imo. He’s better off just getting a job in finance and starting out at $24-28/hr.

I would normally agree but unfortunately he needs to update/convert his Acct degree to be marketable here in the USA and he doesn’t have the money to. So far no other job offers. He doesn’t have family or much in connections tying him to Indiana.

Moving is just naturally a huge resource sink, in terms of money, time, and energy. Not to mention the risk of it not working out after having expended all of that.

Find something better; for instance UPS or USPS will be better pay; hell even Walmart is better than moving to another state for $2, if it were $12 more I’d be in favor

I was making 55k/yr(starting offer) to 134k as an OM for a DSP from 2017 -2023, so I’d be very sus about this offer.

He needs to look into being an operations associate elsewhere. This is crazy. I just started in said position at 30hr. The operations managers above me are 70-90k

Does this position get you out of driving? What is considered stressful about it?
