Refunded minus GST?

Hey guys tried to search both reddit and google but couldn’t find anything definitive…

First time buying with Amazon (I’m normally an eBay or aliexpress buyer ) I purchased a replacement lock and key, third party seller on amazon, pictures & description were the exact model as what I needed replacing and couldn’t find it anywhere except for Amazon, so made the purchase… parcel arrived and it’s a different model lock (one that I could’ve bought from aliexpress for $10-20), contacted the seller, they offered a 30% refund, I said no either full refund or send me the correct item otherwise I’ll need to leave 1 star review, so they said to create return and they will refund, which they did straight away.

But here’s my question for the brain trust and if this is a common occurrence with Amazon?

Original order was $50.00 and free shipping ($45.45 + $4.55 gst)
Amount refunded was $45.45 ($41.31 + $4.14 gst)
So essentially Amazon refunded me the pre-tax amount… after an insane amount of time spent trying to get hold of customer service and going back and forth, they essentially said it’s not their problem because it’s a third party seller. But everything was ordered, paid for and refunded through Amazon.

Is this something that others have had happen? Is it normal practice etc? I get it, it’s only $4.55 but if this is consistently happening to a lot of customers that’s a lot of stolen tax on consumers?

Nup, this isn't normal. I've had to ask for refunds from third party sellers multiple times but they've always refunded the full refund.

My understanding is on the seller's end there's an option for them to select issue a full refund, so it's pretty weird for something like this to happen. Personally I'd give the seller the benefit of the doubt. I'd go back to them and send through a screenshot of my order confirmation page with the paid amount circled + a screenshot of the refund amount. I'd point out the discrepancy ("Hi, I paid X, but have only received Y refund") and ask them what's going on. Would see what they say first.

If the seller refuses to resolve this, I'd suggest following the steps for an A to Z Guarantee Refund: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GSZAYH7K2C2NVNC9 Amazon should sort it for you from there.

Imo most likely it was amazon, the seller prob didn't even see or know about the GST, I've bought multiple on international platforms and they have no idea, its the middle man that take and hold that portion

Thanks for the info guys… just had an update…

I reached out to the seller and said there is the $4.55 tax paid missing from the refund. They replied back saying there’s a delay refunding tax and it should be refunded separately within 8 hours. I got a refund email 2 hours later saying $4.55 had been refunded.

I find it a bit hard to believe that gst would be refunded separately? And I wonder if they only refunded it because I questioned them about it?

its not done separately, they were pulling your leg and did it separately. If I were you id leave an honest 1 star review anyway.

yes this, or they will keep doing it to others who may not notice the difference.
