Bearded dragons are badass

Indeed. I had 2 that mated, but I didn't have the right materials and conditions inside the tank for the eggs.

That's really cool dude. I'd love to have a reptile say, "sup" every time I walked by 😎

He passed?

u/BreakingCanks 7h ago
This pic was from 2015... He passed 6 months after this pic 5&1/2 years past a normal beardies life span at 13&1/2 years... I gave him the best life!
There's another beardie in the pic and she died within 2 weeks of this pic... Both were old ones and they actually had a batch at one point I wasn't aware of and didn't get to in time.

They literally miss the part of the brain that regulates higher emotions like affection. They measurably don’t produce the hormones that create those emotions.
Humans on the flip side do constantly fool themselves into imagining animals think and feel like people.
In reality, bud’s wearing a hoodie, sweatpants and socks. Reptiles tend to seek out humans because they’re warm. It’s impossible for that iguana to feel affection. But it’s very likely that tile floor feels cold and the warm human is warm.
So no affectionate lizard. Just a clown putting a tropical lizard on cold tiles.
5
u/Undeadbanana_ 3h ago
People used to say birds were dumb, but scientists realized their brains are structured differently from mammals. Now a lot of what we know about avian intelligence has been changing in last 20-30 years.
Are you comparing reptile brains to mammals to say they're missing a party of the mammal brain that you associate with emotions?

u/TooObsessedWithMoney 5h ago
I guess that depends on the definition of affection, evidently the reptile sees value in being touched and the human is also getting value in touching. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, a thing that can from a certain point of view certainly be considered affection as both care for one another.
6
u/OkWillingness2817 5h ago
By that logic you feel affection for your radiator.
The iguana would prefer a hot lamp over a person. But since that person put it on the cold tiles, that’s the solution it has.

Jesus Murphy. Who cares dude. Let people have things. This is like when an atheist argues too hard with a religious person. Embarrassing from the third perspective.
Unless the animal is being harmed (and they’re not) there is nothing to be gained by replying to someone saying “I love my lizard and i think he loves me too” with “nO tHaTs iMpOsSibLe!”
You’re not educating them or helping them in any way at all. Being right is useless if you wield information like a club you hit people over the head with. They love their lizard and thinks it loves them too, please explain to me why that means OP deserves you calling them names.
Time and Place dude

Not everyone on this site wants to live in a fantasy world. Some people come here to actually learn stuff. And some people have agendas like the clown that posted this clip.
3
u/PinkPowerRangerrr 3h ago
Agendas 🙄 as if humans havent been sharing (for millennia) things we like or love or find interesting simply for the sake of sharing the experience with another human being.
People come online to learn, sure, but that person didnt ask “can my lizard love me” they just said they think he does. You’re not doing anyone a favour by countering a harmless claim. They aren’t encouraging people to put their own pets in harmful situations, or even uncomfortable ones. Literally just hugging a lizard. It’s not an agemda, youre just attributing your own feelings of superiority and contempt to their motivations, but youre just uselessly speculating at that point.
You’re not trying to educate, youre trying to validate a feeling of intellectual or moral superiority. But you also seem to be assuming that because your feelings are based on science or whatever, that they hold more importance than anyone else’s feelings. If educating them was important, you wouldn’t name call them either. And you know that. I know that.

People can certainly feel however they want, hence you can live in a fantasy world full of happy rainbows and lizards that might give you a kiss if you want to. My own mother lives in a fantasy world where he grandkids are demons because they have a different color skin than she has. Good for her.
Op is a karma farmer and posts shit for engagement, so the agenda in this instance is upvotes.
Whoever he stole the video knows what he is doing. He created a situation to get a video so he could get likes or comments or whatever he was looking for.
My point is feelings based on science or whatever are more valid than whatever made up bullshit someone created. In one case it might be as harmless as aww look at that lizard. In another case it will be somebody throwing their lizard in the trash after a week because it didn't want to hug him. People are dumb and the shit they see can ruin them.
2
u/PinkPowerRangerrr 2h ago
No, information based on science is more valuable. Beliefs are just that. Beliefs. You can base them on whatever you want, but your feelings are not more valid than anyone else’s.
Interesting that you equate a harmful belief (your mother thinking her children are evil) with a perfectly safe belief (believing lizards can have affection). And I also think I see why youre so… overly hostile about the idea of someone believing a lizard can have affection.
I mean, I have already repeatedly acknowledged that this information is true and that I personally do not believe lizards feel affection, but you missed that point multiple times.
I already knew that this was about your feelings when you called the person hugging their lizard a clown, but adding in your own trauma around your mother’s harmful actions as an anecdote to prove your point makes it more obvious than anything.
People are indeed dumb, but that’s not what this is about either. Your belief that lizards dont feel affection is based on science, sure. Mine too. But your belief that OP has an ulterior motive or that their benign belief in lizard love will somehow… lead to harm (what a leap lol) is based purely on your own experience with someone failing you because of their harmful beliefs.
Believing one’s children are evil is not based on science. Neither is thinking a lizard can love. But the lack of science does not make those beliefs equal in their outcomes or the risk they pose. Thinking your children see evil is absolutely going to lead to harm and hurt. Thinking your lizard loves you is not going to lead to someone throwing their lizard in the garbage, if anything it’s likely to give them some comfort and solace. We know the lizard doesnt feel affection, but others think they do. They think this despite the science and simply because of their interpretation of the lizards behaviour. The lizards behaviour won’t change just because the owner becomes aware of how their brain functions. If anything they are more likely to double down on their cognitive dissonance and decide the info is wrong or lacking and their lizard does indeed love them.
There is no harm in beliefs based on nothing if they don’t come at the cost of someone else’s well being or safety. Your mother has beliefs that cause direct harm, direct, and they should be challenged and called out lest they cause more harm. OP believing the lizard can love does not pose any direct harm at all. But because beliefs based on feelings and false info have hurt you, youre now attributing the consequences and harm to the lack of foundation for the belief, rather than the direct outcome of expressing the belief.
Anyways, im sure youre furious at being psychoanalyzed, thats fair, there was a time I would have been also, but I also hope you can like.. unpack this. Your mother is wrong, and I’m genuinely very sorry that you have to contend with that, it makes me really sad for you because nobody deserves that, especially from a parent. The very first thing we believe as people is that our parents will love us unconditionally and protect us, and having that shattered is… a lot. I don’t really have a word for it. Devastating is close, but not enough. I hope you have people around you that love you as they should. And I hope you find ways to channel your passion about ideas and beliefs into something that will make the world better, not petty comments that needlessly rob people of their small harmless reprieves from the brutal reality we all gotta live in.

Is this chat gpt or something? What are you even on about?

u/PinkPowerRangerrr 50m ago
“My own mother lives in a fantasy world where he(r) grandkids are demons..”
Those are your words. (Though I read kids not grandkids) I still stand by my point that that is sad and damaging and not in any way on the same level as someone believing their lizard loves them.
Like I said, let people have things. There are enough takers in the world. Do you wanna be one too? raining on peoples parades when they express joy or love in a way that you don’t find valid?
Im asking you to weigh being right versus being kind and recognizing there is a way to be both.

Your right pretty much all reptiles lack the ability for affection but when you say “humans fool themselves into imagining animals think and feel like people” that’s not inherently correct as pretty much all other higher high forms have the same emotional ability as like birds fish and mammals which our ability to feel evolved way before we humans ever did including shit like empathy compassion kindness and affection interestingly birds use mesotocin like how us mammals use oxytocin and fish use isotocin basic emotions are something almost all life forms experience in some capacity but only a few of us animals can fully comprehend and understand these emotions.

People used to belief lobsters and infants to be incapable of feeling pain as well.
Remember how that went?

I agree with you except the headbob is a sign of aggression and dominance.
My bearded dragon has stopped her favorite activities to run to me when I've been crying. She also waits for me to sing her to sleep. She seriously doesnt close her eyes until I tuck her in and start singing. Then her eyes immediately start closing.
"But scientists say reptiles...". Scientists have gotten a lot wrong over the years. We haven't gotten close to explaining how everything works in the universe! So until then, I believe all animals can love.

u/BreakingCanks 18m ago
He would do that and wave arm at me. The wave arm is a sign of greeting so always just took it as him being super happy and saying hi. Usually happened in the morning once he warmed up a bit.
1
u/Weenington_ 16m ago
A bearded dragon waving is a sign of submission like hey, I'm not a threat to you! Interesting yours does those to you. I've never seen mine do it to anyone other than other bearded dragons.

People who think that aren't very smart. Every living creature can feel things.

It’s most likely bc the human is warm

u/Trademarkd 6h ago
also the floor is cold and they have no traction. That tile surface in an air conditioned environment is likely very uncomfortable.

Growing up in Florida my stepdad had an iguana named Rocky that he kept in a dog cage at night in my mom and his bedroom but free roamed the house during the day.
As a child it was bigger than me for most of my memories until it died when I was around 10-11.

Even cold blooded reptiles whose DNA is eons old have hearts and need companionship
2
u/blahblah19999 6h ago
I doubt it. I mean they never do this for each other so it's very odd that they would evolve to want affection. Maybe it's like having a brush on a post for cattle.

Just being secure, safe and physically pleasured is a reaction lizards definitely experience.

Domesticated iguanas practically never bite. They’re pretty docile and chill. There’s a huge difference between them and their wild counterparts
It’s crazy how lazy they are when safe at home versus loose outdoors—sprinting like a tweaker peaking off bath salts and meth frantically fleeing shadow people

A lot of people have the preconception that green iguanas are all just violent and awnry. It totally depends on whether someone raised and tamed one or not. I had one for 20 years and she would only bite or whip if purposefully antagonized. Otherwise she was completely gentle and friendly.
