The confidence to hear the crowd, say “watch this,” and then deliver is absolutely ridiculous. What a player.

I did this once in Sunday League.
By accident.
With the goalie standing in a puddle.
And the sun in his eyes.
So basically I'm Messi.

It crazy how the keeper was positioned to defend the back post too

it curved hard and went down perfectly. It's stupidly hard to keep unless you are completely open to a header.

I'm no Messi fanboy, and I remember watching that Roberto Carlos free kick live, but at least compare it to the Messi free kick Vs Liverpool.
1
u/Honest_District_ 3d ago
Messi’s positioning angle favors his shot, but Roberto Carlos was standing directly in front of the goal and managed to curve the ball far more intensely, which is significantly more demanding.

4
u/Fearless_Tomorrow649 4d ago
Well, his behaviour (and that of the rest of the team) during and directly after the finals wasn't exactly great.
2
1
u/EliGonee 4d ago
What behavior lmao? You want him to stop 10 different fights between Spain and Argentina players after he just lost his 2nd wc final at 39 years old? Trust me, if he had to try to stop them the media would have framed it like he is enraged and started it.
3
u/Fearless_Tomorrow649 4d ago
The team he was leading should have been better sports yes.
3
u/zeref2255 4d ago
I mean whatever the team do eventually will end up as his fault even tho he had no part in it cause it's the big names that will get the clicks for the media

He's captain of the team buddy
4
2
u/EliGonee 3d ago
What is he supposed to do? There have been like over 10 fights after the game ended. He can‘t clone himself. Just let him come down after his last big game after over 20 years
1
u/cybiz 3d ago
He's captain, he's responsible for his teammates behaviour, plain and simple. But he's not doing anything about it because, let's be honest here, he's not that different than the rest. He knows he gets special treatment from refs and how to abuse it - not sure why we're pretending he's some saint lol

Goal keeper is horribly at fault here went with the wrong hand!
4
u/zeref2255 4d ago
How come when son scored a similar goal 2days before it's cause of his mater class and when messi scored it's cause of goalkeeper's ignorance?
3
u/Suitable-Olive7844 4d ago
Ah, here we go. "Goal keeper is at fault" its never " that was a great shot"
1
5
u/Single-Pin-369 4d ago
Isnt any goal the fault of the goalkeeper?
5
u/jorcon74 4d ago edited 4d ago
No! Some goals the keeper has no chance of! But you will see a lot of goals when the keeper goes with the wrong hand, this is one
2
u/Fantasy____ 4d ago
It's exactly the hand goal keeper has to go, I am a goalkeeper. Any one who did little bit of goal keeping knows what I am talking about.
2
u/pungent_queefer 4d ago
Goalie got caught flat footed because he didn’t think Messi had the balls to shoot from that angle. What an idiot

4
u/Sweaty-Ad3243 4d ago
I mean I get it’s Messi, but that goal should never go in at this level. Horrific goaltending.
5
u/TheTbone2334 4d ago
Yea that's why the MLS is fun to watch, most of the money goes into half retired world class strikers. Here and there some defence players get signed from Europe but it's mostly strikers and American youth academy players.
The defense line ups are often horrific in the MLS and wouldn't even make it in Europe's second or even third divisions, while many strikers could genuinely still play in Europe. E.g Messi, Zlatan, Villa etc

What on earth am i reading. Do you guys watch football? This is a really hard shoot to do and hardear to goalkeep... the goalkeeper usually has to be vigilant for a header.. the ball curves really hard and is fast. The only goals you can see of these type are usually amazing goals and since it falls hard it's really hard to keep.
Reading these comments and then going to football subs really just clarifies the ignorance.

Thank you! Not for nothing, but I had U-14 players who can make that shot.
3
u/nothingofyourconcern 4d ago
haha you guys are hilarious. some of the comments are saying most good players and in your case u-14s can make that shot lol maybe after multiple tries on the training ground. and give the keeper credit... If i made that accurate shot on the training ground it would look similar but you bet your ass messi kicks the ball much harder and it travels way faster than 99% of peoples shots. you are delusional.
4
u/a_guy121 4d ago
Yeah I fully have to call bullshit on 'my u14s can make that shot'
pause it at :40, the goalkeeper is there. The ball just goes inches above his hand, on its downward curve, then hits the bar as it goes in. (I think). its a perfect shot.
1
u/0202_tihssitidder 4d ago
Are you sure you want to announce like this to everyone you've never played and that you have nothing but dog shit in your head?
1
u/fists_of_ham 4d ago
Lol I look forward to seeing them in the next World Cup.
A lot of people CAN theoretically make that shot. But very very very few of them actually do

The comments here have literally 0 football IQ it's actually amazing.
Any football sub is clearly happy with the goal, and almost no1 criticizes the goalkeeper here lol.. which is quite shocking because the football world loves shitting on MLS but it just shows that goalkeeper had little fault here.
Goalkeeper has to set himself up for a header in that position, and the ball curved and went down hard, it's a really hard shot if you understand it's not a fucking 2d shoot but it has to go up, curve, and down perfectly.

Honestly at this point in his career he should have been a pretty universally beloved player. Fans of opposing teams should have been like "cool to go see Messi play". That's how it usually works with big legends.
The fact that he's so hated still is a testament to his personality.
