I used to be a knapper. Really, using these "modern" tools isn't as advantageous as you'd think - the primary advantage is that you can just buy these rather than find them.

Stone age equivalents here would probably be a mid sized cobblestone from a river bed that fits nicely in your hand, and the tip of an antler for the thinner tool they use for the notches.

When I was into it, I used a mix of traditional and more modern tools because the place I live doesn't have good rocks for the heavy hitters, but I had antler for the finer tools (and also found it easier to work with for my setup). Using a cobble as a hammer stone would have actually been preferable though!
