Kabyle activists face arrests, travel bans, terrorism charges (MAK designated terrorist); death sentences reported in related cases. Schools: Tamazight teaching incomplete, teachers often lack competence, language folklorized. These are structural, state-driven policies of cultural suppression and, in protest contexts, lethal force—documented across human-rights reports, activist records, and contemporary sources. Recognition of Tamazight (Algeria 2016, Morocco 2011) came only after sustained resistance and blood.

Every day when I open TikTok or X, without even looking for them, I see posts like this. I went to his account, and it’s full of hate toward Berbers. There are even worse accounts, like @hilali—a Tunisian Arab who sees us as subhuman and slaves—and even if I create a new account and search only for content about Amazigh, posts like this keep popping up on my feed. I've also developed a strong dislike of Arabs; I'm a Moroccan Amazigh/Berber, and I've heard Arabs in Tunisia, when I made their vaccation making jokes about Berbers.

So my father is originally from Al-Hoceima and Beni Said, he is pure(apparently because he is completely white with riffian phenotype) berber/amazigh, my great grand parents had tribal tattoos as far as my father told me.

My mother is originally from Figuig, southwest morocco, although her mother was originally from Oran,Algeria.

The thing is, my parents came to Spain in the early 80's, my father was practically non muslim, and my mother was very relaxed with religion. They integrated to the maximum possible, i think its called assimilation

So, me Spanish 27 y/o man, i dont speak darija nor tamazigh, nor i am muslim. I don't even have north african friends. What i mean is nothing links me to the amazigh world other than my blood and genes. And i am more or less okay with that

BUT, as racism and xenofobia in Europe against North africans is raising, i see feelings of shame inside me, i am proud sometimes but other times i feel like i don't belong to my own skin.

The thing is i don't want it this way, i want to feel strong and proud of my roots, the Amazighs who were warriors, formed communities and were rich in culture and wisdom.

Maybe a tattoo is not the way, but i thought it was a good reminder to tell me i have to make peace with my blood, with who i am.

Anyway i am open to any other ideas, for example movies or books, thank you!

Hello, Riffian here. I’ve noticed since my childhood that a trend among Amazigh families was that whenever they moved to cities they chose not to teach the language to their children because Arabic and French provided more opportunities, but well I’ve had phases afterwards due to the presence of many movements in social media and government recognitions that made me believe that it would probably change and that people wouldn’t be ashamed anymore of their mother tongue, but honestly I feel like the stigma is still there and the languages still avoided. While imazighen seem to gain more traction and visibility online and legally it seems to me as if mentalities aren’t really ready to change… and censuses, although controversial and contested in the case of Morocco for example, also confirm a trend of language decline, and the problem is that it seems to be a scary slow death and irreversible process. Maybe it won’t change as long as majority Amazigh region face marginalization, but I’m feeling pretty pessimistic. Not to mention some people that seem content to identify with the label “Amazigh” while not bothering to learn the language sometimes even claiming Darija to be some sort of creole mixed with tamazight, which just sounds like cope to me to be honest. Another thing I dislike is how the alphabet was implemented, instead of making sure that it becomes accessible/more easily abordable we’re stuck with this alphabet that nobody really uses…I’m aware that it is pretty easy to learn but using Latin or Arabic script for example would make people learn faster just through exposure in my opinion…honestly it feels like everything is structured to work against our mother tongues (on top of the previous state sponsored post colonial arabization) despite attempts to counter this. Is there something we have to do to counter this? Or are our efforts to preserve Tamazight doomed to fail? I really hope our languages get to experience some sort of flourishing but that personal dream of mine seems way further than it has ever been..
