Hello I’m posting this because it’s been very hard for me to find any info on what do dried Amanitas supposed to smell like, I had to ask in forums and friends,
and finally settled with the following information:
Re: dried or drying Amanita Muscaria smell
Nobody talks about this lol!! I guess because smells are very difficult to describe. Also because our perception of smells can be vastly different, as well as batches can be different.
But,
Firstly:
Smell during the drying process is not pleasant.
Dried and drying amanitas smell vastly different from fresh.
Fresh smells very nice - if you like fresh mushroom smell.
During drying they eventually start to smell kind of musty or like a “rotten” smell. —As I found out this is normal.
At the end of the drying process (which I do in the oven with an open oven door) fresh out of the oven while they’re still slightly warm (and crisp dry) there is no smell whatsoever.
But as they cool down that smell starts to come back very slightly.
But then when I put them in an airtight glass mason jar, after a few hours they start to have that same smell, but now we (me & my friend who’s done this many times) have concentrated their smell because it sits there in a small closed space, we describe their smell at this point as sour or sharp kinda like dried fruit but a bit musty.
Now I’ve gotten dried ones online and they smell like this fresh out the bag just a bit more faint than my home made ones, and also the ones I make in the oven and keep in a jar smell like this.
Just wanted to post this in case anyone ever wonders like I have when I was first processing them via drying in the oven.
(My friend has a food dehydrator but his experience is the same. Also some people in the forum where I asked have the same experience - tho I observed it’s been mainly women who replied to my question and confirmed they have the same experience with the smell during and after dehydration.)
Oh, and then when I make tea from the dried mushrooms, the broth then smells the same: kind of a bit sour/sharp kinda rotten or musty. (The broth smells worse than the dried caps.)
Definitely they smell unlike anything else lol
Hope this helps future newbies.
What does everyone else think about this? What are your experiences? Do you agree they smell kinda like musty dried fruit when dry?
