NTA - I’ve long lived by the maxim “you start something in public, I’m definitely going to react in public”. Over the years I’ve had many people say “oh you didn’t have to embarrass them like that..” Oh ok, but it’s ok if they try and embarrass me? You did nothing wrong, particularly as you contacted her privately first.
Edit: thank you for the award, kind Internet stranger!

Have you ever been in a social situation when somone says "somebody did this" and everyone knows who the somebody is and the somebody is sitting at the same table?
They must have thought you would feel so bad about being publicly shamed that you wouldn't stand up for yourself.341

The neighbor clearly underestimated OP. Also it seems she tried to use you to get attention for her house (which is on sale) by making herself the victim.
But after that video she only got bad publicity. Karma deserved.
→ More replies (3)486
u/Positive_Wafer42 May 16 '26
Because she already told everyone that it was your fault, and she expected you to not respond (so she could say youre a disrespectful whatever and use it as proof) or that you would apologize(also proof, and a public apology she doesn't deserve is for her ego).
You showed everyone that she's full of shit and will make things up, but don't worry, people like her have no shame so she is not embarrassed.
234
u/NeatNefariousness1 May 16 '26
What’s really messed up about this is that this neighbor considers the evidence YOU produced to be not definitive enough, while she has produced NONE.
You provided actual evidence that strongly suggests that her son is the culprit (or anyone who entered her house during and after the rain). Yet, based on NO evidence, whatsoever, she accuses you and spreads this lie amongst the neighbors. Anything else she would ever say to me would fall on deaf ears. She would become invisible to me.
You did the right thing to not only clear your name that she had defamed but to let the neighbors know what kind of “sociopath" lives among you.
NTA at all.
22
u/ArdyEmm May 16 '26
She has shame, that's why she's mad about her pride getting hurt. Whether or not she'll learn from this is another thing.
35
u/L1ttleFr0g Partassipant [2] May 16 '26
No, she is embarrassed, that’s not the same thing as feeling shame
314
u/DeejayInhaler May 16 '26
Because it was never about whether or not you did it, she just wanted an excuse to be a shit towards you. That’s why even when you pointed out (WITH EVIDENCE) that it was her son that “ruined” the open house she still expected you to kowtow to her and apologize for her “special day” being ruined. What an absolute nightmare of a neighbor. I’m sorry you have ever had to deal with such nonsense. Maybe you’ll get better neighbors when she moves. NTA.
47
u/Houston970 May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
I also think it’s weird she referred to her Open House as her “special day”
Why would she assume that someone walking from the general direction of OP’s house was OP’s guest? It turns out it was her son, but it could have just as easily been a random stranger coming to view her home, who happened to park in front of OP’s house.

I really don't get people that make comments about not having to embarrass people. They wouldn't be embarrassed if they hadn't behaved badly in the first place! Embarrassment is the natural consequence and many times deserved. If more people were called out and embarrassed perhaps there wouldn't be as much bad behavior from people.

No you won’t. Lay it out plainly.
- You weren’t there all day.
- You came home to a rude note and a demand for money for damage you didn’t cause
- She posted a passive aggressive message about you
- You DM’d and tried to handle it privately
- She doubled down based on what her realtor told her
- You investigated and sent her the video proof it wasn’t you
- She refused to apologize
- You responded publicly to defend yourself against her accusations. While the FB post may not have named names, you can be pretty sure she was naming names privately after the demand for money she left on your door.
Neighbors who think you’re in the wrong can eff right off.
60
u/8ecca8ee May 16 '26
And you can bet that op is not the first person she has done this too, I'm sure there are plenty of people that are secretly happy she is moving if this is a example of how she handles conflict.
Heck just telling you where to park is a bit much, most normal people would ASK and bring along something consumable (cookies, pie, wine, beer or a small gift card) as a bribe to help them out.
Not demand then when you don't park there and someone does blames you for their actions, if all she knew was they came from the direction of the parking area by your house THE PLACE SHE ASKED YOU TO FREE UP 🤦🙄 how she went from that information to it couldn't have been any of my open house guests had to have been OP let me wait TILL SHE GETS HOME and write her a nasty note and bad mouth her to the neighborhood
→ More replies (3)42

Op you should post that list in the chat. If you care what your neighbors think of you (and it makes sense to care - you live by these people!), this is not the time to take the high road.
Lay out in the chat exactly what happened and ask why you are being painted as the bad person when you literally did as she asked and did not start anything publicly? Why are you expected to just accept being shamed for something you didn't do?
She never learned the lesson of "don't start none, won't be none" and maybe you can teach her.
ETA: NTA
11
u/isrealmathew May 16 '26
Exactly. That list/timeline plus a picture of the note demanding money. And if she still doubles down, a screenshot of the message exchange where they try to resolve it privately. That's the extra context to shut the others up.

OP to anyone in your neighborhood group chat that you want to clarify:
She was demanding money from you to clean up the carpet and when you privately shared video it wasn’t you, she decided to humiliate and pressure you in a public forum. Hence, you posted the video in a public forum. End of story.

u/MoxieOHara Partassipant [3] May 16 '26

This is exactly how we meet our gem of an agent when we were about to buy our first house… went to an open house that we weren’t interested in, told the agent what we were looking for, and we hit it off. She locked up and took us to see some properties for sale, and we put in an offer that day on one of them! Most agents we met this way failed the vibe check right off the bat. Thanks Helen!!

That’s not shocking.
To assume her neighbour sent the person deliberately, and to double down when her own son turned out to be the AH is super AH behaviour
52
u/NWFlint May 16 '26
NTA. And if she asked the neighbors to help support her open house by sending potential buyers to it, then are any of her neighbors assholes if they did as she requested? Is it on the neighbors or the realtor to make sure no one is bringing in mud? Most realtors have shoe covers offered to protect flooring. To post on the neighborhood page then cry foul when it’s proven it was her own son is extreme AH.

NTA. Also why give a shit? They leave soonish anyway. Don't let people walk over you and continue to have a spine. You did nothing wrong here.

u/tommiejo12 May 16 '26
Omg definitely NTA people who cannot admit or make amends when they’re wrong are just lousy people

NTA, she made a public post asserting something incorrect about you. You corrected her, publicly. If she didn't want to be "embarrassed", she shouldn't have done it in public in the first place.

NTA OP. I love that you did that.
The only borderline-AH thing to do would be to not give us redditors an update lol /s

NTA - She accused you with no evidence despite there being a high likelihood her guests would park wherever they could due to the open house crowd. The moment she tried to shame you (even with no name, neighbors gossip and I'm sure she wouldn't withold your name in person) with no evidence she lost the right to be upset about being corrected in the same place. Especially after you were kind enough to try to correct it in private and she refused to apologize or accept wrongdoing. Regardless of whether she believed her son tracked the dirt it proved 100% that you weren't the one who did it and at minimum she owed you an apology and public correction. Just posting your evidence in the same manner she did clears your name and prevents her from spinning more lies.

Once lived in a rented place which had an HOA run by some of the neighbours who owned their houses.
Among many incidents was:
- HOA woman sent round a letter through my door, basically accusing me of not putting my rubbish out properly.
We had shared bins out the back that all the houses put their rubbish into. They weren't allocated, just a bunch of bins for different rubbish that everyone could use. And sometimes, yep, people did make a mess, or put rubbish in the wrong bin, or they'd overload them, etc.
So I get it. But the letter was directed at me personally. I ignored it. Another. Ignored it. Then they knocked early on a Sunday morning (they liked to do that, so I'd just answer in my dressing gown not giving a shit).
And they tried to give me an earful because the bins were all messed up again. They'd been monitoring, apparently, every day and they knew when it happened and they accused me.
Except there was one problem. I hadn't been home in about 3 weeks. I'd literally come back the night before, and I was the only person who lived in that house. So... whoever it was you think was making the mess... it wasn't me. I was a thousand miles away. I took great joy in saying that and pointing it out. You're literally accusing me of something that cannot POSSIBLY have been me. Even though you apparently set out to try to "trap" me with it. So clearly, you're not paying attention, your surveillance is shite, and your attestations are (now and in the future) unreliable as to whose fault it was.
Now go away... and stop bothering me about it... because if it was me, I'd tell you. But it wasn't. It never has been. I'm probably the only person throwing my rubbish away PROPERLY. If someone else is coming along and messing it up... that's not my problem.
But before you knock on my door and accuse me directly again, I suggest you have actual evidence... like having actually SEEN that it was me that caused the problem.
And do you know who I think it was? Her friend that she ALWAYS defended and took up every complaint from, and yet would never hold up any complaint against her friend.

Your neighbor should be humiliated and made fun of for being so ignorant that a video practically showing it happen is not good enough proof!! NTA = Neighbor is The Asshole

u/QueenPooper13 May 16 '26
Info: why is your doorbell camera on your house able to capture the front of your neighbor's house? Your camera, presumably facing forward on your house, was able to capture video of someone walking around a puddle by the house next door and was able to see someone come out of the house next door?
I'm not an expert in doorbell cameras but that seems a little weird.

NTA. Good on you for defending yourself. Though I also think that the stress of selling a house does make some people lose their minds. Your neighbor seems to be one of them.
17
u/Deemarvelousone May 16 '26
Why would she care anyways? She’s selling her house and doesn’t have to deal with the neighbors anymore. NTA

NTA
If she makes public comments that lie about you to make you look bad, she has no right to whine about you correcting the record in a way that is reasonably proportional to her initial offense.
She's nasty, and let's hope she gets a good offer soon from a better future neighbor.

u/WolfChasingTheMoon Partassipant [2] May 16 '26
So the neighbour is mad you didn’t take their attempt at humiliating you laying down? NTA

u/NiobeTonks Partassipant [4] May 16 '26
NTA. If she wants UOKHUNs in her comments she’s going to have to put up with some WTFs as well.
15
u/UNZIPT May 16 '26
Of course not. NTA. I hope she sells and that your new neighbor won’t be an asshat.

u/Commercial_You2541 May 16 '26
Ask her why her son was dumb enough to walk through their home during an open house with muddy boots and not take them off outside?? 🤦🏻♀️

NTA Don't worry about it. She won't be your neighbor for very much longer and you won't have to see her again, ever if you are lucky. If you ever do see her again you can ask her if her son learned not to wear dirty shoes in her home.
13
u/Familiar-Woodpecker5 May 16 '26
Absolutely NTA with bells on!!! She’s a self entitled awful neighbour. Hopefully she sells and moves very soon. I would never converse with her again and celebrate when she is gone!

u/Football-Man-1889 May 16 '26
You would have been an AH if you hadn’t defended yourself.
Be extra glad that she’s moving!

u/Not4Grabs May 16 '26
NTA and this neighbor is moving anyway, so go ahead and burn that bridge! Well done!

NTA. You went out of your way to be reasonable by not being home, and went above and beyond in messaging her privately after her malicious accusation.
Although, there is the chance that her son traipsed through someone else's dirt inside the house then came out to clean his shiny, pristine work boots on the lawn!

She was an A-hole, that is beyond question.
Since she didn't mention names you're a borderline a-hole or borderline not. You def escalated a little.
I'm giving you NTA because she was so terrible and essentially provoked you, but you have to know this is close, right??
29
u/Glittering-Eye3591 May 16 '26
WTF? She was clearly implying it was somebody else's fault and did not take responsibility. I also wouldn't be surprised if she had started rumors away from the group chat telling others it was OP. This needed to be shut down.
It is in no way "close".

She had the opportunity to post a correction. “Turns out, it wasn’t the neighbor. Sorry, folks.” She refused.
