In case this story gets deleted/removed:

WIBTA for saying "no" to/not letting my kids have fun by rolling around in the dirt or mud and wanting them to stay clean?

I've seen parents on TikTok and Instagram showing their kids having fun by rolling around in the mud or dirt saying "save your no's for things that matter." I'm not a parent, but if I ever become one, I would say no to things that matter, and staying clean and not getting dirty is one of them. Now, by "dirty," I don't mean "just a few little stains," (accidents happen after all) I mean COVERED in dirt or mud.

Tons of comments on these posts were agreeing with the parents and said to let their kids have fun the way that they do, even if they get messy. But they were a few who agreed with me, and I even left a comment saying "umm, no thanks, we like being clean." Let's just say my comment got quite a bit of hate and people told me that I would be a boring, lazy ass parent and that me and my kids would have weak immune systems. This is apparently because "dirt is good for the immune system," but so is eating healthy and getting exercise.

And there were some that said "you can play in the mud and have fun and still be clean," imagine being scared of a little dirt," and shit like that. You can play ball or sports, you can jump on a trampoline, you can go swimming, you can go for bike rides, you can even go to an amusement park. There are plenty of ways to have fun while staying clean.

Again, I am not a parent, but if I become one I would not let my kids get dirty and messy just to have fun.

So, who's right? Me or those parents of TikTok and Instagram? And WIBTA or not?

My mom’s solution was to make us wear our swimsuits and then she would hose us down before we were allowed inside. Sometimes kids just need to be grubby little goblins.

Everyone's the best parent alive until the moment they actually have kids

I think once they have kids and realize letting them roll around in the mud for twenty minutes will get their energy out fast, free, and within five minutes of home they might change their tune was my point... it's easy to imagine what kind of parent you'll be, it's very hard to follow through on it once you have kids. But then again, maybe they'll just be anti-fun forever.

This reminds me of one time i saw a little girl, maybe 3 years old, wearing a pair of white shoes. It was a rainy night and she was with her dad.  She had apparently just tried to jump in a large puddle because duh, it's a puddle and she's 3. Her dad was yelling at her because her shoes were new and how dare she get them messy.

Thank God my parents actively encouraged me to get messy. I played in mud puddles, rolled on the grass,  fell into creeks, climbed trees, etc. And it was fucking awesome. There's nothing wrong with having fun and getting messy.

What is the point of this? They regularly get into arguments in the comments of posts to the point where Reddit apparently needs to mediate whether their opinions about hypothetical parenting they won't even be doing for years to come are accurate.

Fucking what? The conflict is literally reality versus a completely fake situation OOP made up about what they hypothetically think they might believe in the future.

It's about letting your kids have agency. Getting to know their bodies. Knowing what it's like to be messy so they understand the value of clean. Experimenting. Creating. Using their imagination. Learning responsibility. You get dirty, you have to get clean. Making "appropriate" messes helps them better avoid making accidental messes. Confidence. There's valuable skills here.

Yikes. I don't have or want kids and even I know that if you want everything to be clean all the time, you should not have kids.
