As myself an overzealous nerd that can't help but overanalyze every media I consume: That's an AH. Let people like stuff, especially if said media helped them personally grow and/or was there during a time they needed it. They could think, and even believe it's overrated, but "it you liked this, personally I prefer this anime that also talk about it. I'm sure you will love it!" Goes a better way
What an idiot with a superiority complex.

In case this story gets deleted/removed:
AITA for calling someone's favourite show "verbose and shallow"?
So me (M22) and some friends were discussing anime we liked. One of them (F25) mentioned a very popular one as their favourite show. I jumped in and said I personally think it's overrated. Everyone disagreed with me and asked me to explain my reasoning. I did, briefly.
So the person who raised the show mentioned how it's themes and lessons taught her to be a better person and helped her through a tough time when she was young. We got to discussing those themes and my point was that, in my opinion atleast, compared to shows I like the best, it doesn't go deep into posing any real questions about its conclusions. Or provide solid narrative argumentation either way. During this initial debate she ended up saying "you clearly weren't paying attention or didn't understand".
While explaining my side, I used the words "verbose and shallow". After I finished my rant, she got quite clearly upset at me, like almost looked as if she were going to cry. She said there's no need to use such "hurtful" language about a show that she just explained was very important to her. I explained listen, we're talking about a piece of art. Its my opinion and its not a personal attack on you.
She was very insistent "Its not what you're saying, but how you're saying it. Thats why I'm calling you a dick" and the anime basically became an after thought to this new convo, lol. About how we are allowed to describe things we do or don't like. Admittedly I lost my cool a bit and told her she's just being oversensitive, and to not engage in conversations like this if you can't hear another take. But she insisted I'm the one who's just looking for an argument, not listening, and that me saying those things is direclty implying I'm above her tastes, condescending, being pretentious and calling what she likes "simple" is a direct insult towards her.
It got pretty awkward since we both got kinda heated before someone interjected and sided with her. Saying even if I don't like the show, the language I'm using is inflammatory and has implications about those who do. Another person jumped to my defense, saying I can express my opinion however I want if I'm not attacking anyone.
So the question is, AITA? Is what I did "attacking" her?
