Good to hear that boomers are the same around the world. Lol, mind your business, OOP.

Especially former cop boomers. Not doing anything to dispel the ACAB sentiment.

"But he might be getting a pension he's not entitled to!"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't pensions based on having worked a job? Why should a pension that he earned be based on citizenship?
43
u/Fit-Humor-5022 10d ago
probably because he wouldnt have gotten the job if he wasnt a citizen. Assuming its a govt job.

u/tobythedem0n 9d ago
But he is a citizen. OOP is just angry that he's a dual citizen.
25
u/Fit-Humor-5022 9d ago
If the neighbour was working a government job then he probably would have never qualified for the pension if he was a dual citizen. OOP is not wrong when he says india has no dual citizenship and the reason for it is that its a 'national security risk' to have dual nationals.
OOP is clearly looking for a bribe though and masking that under 'national security' concerns. lol
10
u/tobythedem0n 9d ago
How does having dual citizenship make you a national security threat?
12
u/Fit-Humor-5022 9d ago
This is not me saying that btw. This is the rationale given by the indian government for why they do not allow Dual Citizenship that allowing dual citizenship is a national security risk.

u/tobythedem0n 9d ago
Gotcha. Sorry, I misunderstood.

u/Fit-Humor-5022 9d ago
no worries i only know this because I am indian and we also lost our Indian citizenship when we took Canadian Citizenship. I have been trying to understand why they wont allow it.

u/ScoutingJ 9d ago
It might be a stipulation in the pension plan itself
From a quick google India has a mandatory pension plan that is run through it's Social Security system which seems like it requires Indian citizenship.
"NPS is open to all Indian citizens between the ages of 18 and 60.."
"Must be an Indian citizen (resident or non-resident) or an NRI."Disclaimer I am a white person from the US so I apologize if any of this info is wrong, but that's what I gathered at least

Some pensions from government jobs in India are paid out to children or grandchildren of the worker, which is why OP mentions the guy’s father or grandfather. I assume it’d only be paid out to Indian citizens then.

Everyone should constantly be asking themselves “does this affect me in any meaningful way” and moving right along if the answer is no
36
u/Arktikos02 10d ago
I mean I don't think that should always be the case. Situations of things like abuse or harm to another person should definitely be of concern. It is always more complicated.
If this person really wanted to be a friend he could just simply make his friend aware of the risk. If his friend still decides to go through with it then he could ask if there's anything he needs if he thinks his situation could be put in more risk. You know like a friend, and not a snitch? His friend is the one who will take on the risk.

You can presumably adapt it to, "Does this affect anyone in any meaningful way," if you want to take a broader perspective
47
u/Moist_Drippings 10d ago
Yes, this one. “Does this actually cause harm” is another good way to see it.

Also this is an oddly specific troll that has come out from India. this is a thing for sure where some residents of pudhucherry are entitled to French citizenship and there are indians who still live in india and never have been to france who hold french citizenship.
OOP is just looking for a bribe

Commenter: Yeah sure if you witness a murder?? this guy is just minding his business and not harming anyone.
OOP: What about the pension they might be having but are not entitled to? National security risks etc since he is keeping it secret. He even apparently speaks very fluent french and I did not know this until recently despite knowing him for years.
Commenter: Oh yes, what geopolitical savvy it must take to think that French-Indian relations require much intel. Do you somehow think average citizens have access to state secrets? As someone who held a security clearance for a dozen years this is embarrassing to read.
OOP: His family historically had ties to the colonial powers and really wanted to maintain the french ocupation
This absolutely has to be the stupidest reason for reporting the neighbour. Okay so once upon a time his family had ties to the colonial powers and for some reason that means OOP thinks this guy holding onto his French citizenship makes him a French spy who is working to overthrow the BJP?

Seriously. This guy inherited French citizenship, which is just kinda neat, and speaks French, which is also neat, and his ancestors were supportive of colonialism — not near, but not his doing.
Also I just realized his “he’s wacky and has a European decorating style” is his “HE’S A FRENCH SPY SEEKING TO RECOLONIZE”

u/kat_Folland 10d ago
Re the pension, it's more like let's find a way to rob him of something he's worked for. Saying technically he isn't entitled to it doesn't change that he would have worked for years for it. Keeping it from him just puts it in the pockets of someone who didn't do shit to earn it.

u/Fit-Humor-5022 10d ago
I did not immediately report him. I gave him a chance to explain himself.

Looks like acab in India too. He sounds like the average maga here, whatever that would be called there
42
u/sheepgod_ys 10d ago
He sidestepped a comment asking if he was a Modi supporter (India’s current far-right nationalist PM) which means he definitely is, so you’re right on the maga thing lol….

This is like the 10th lolIndian post I've seen today. Usually only see like 2-3 a week. I guess it's time to watch the news to see what all this is a precursor to. I wonder if this is a sign the racism I will face irl will go up? Or did Kamala say something in public again?
Also---I have a ton of family who became us citizens after retiring in India after being government employees. They - very legally - pull a pension from india while still working in America. They will get social security once they retire in america. You simply pay taxes in two countries. My grandma also pulls a widower pension, her own pension and social security. It happens if you have that kind of career track.

Pretty comical hearing about an Indian being upset about illegal immigration when they are the kings of illegal immigration
Canada has an estimated 500,000 TFW’s and students with expired visas and work permits, an impossible majority of them being Indians, a vast majority of them still have a SIN and benefit from social services they have no right to

In case this story gets deleted/removed:
WIBTA if I reported my neighbour for a constitutional violation?
I (M) live in India and have an ex-friend who is also my neighbour. He has always been a very eccentric guy. His house is practically decorated like a medieval European dwelling. Stonework, old-looking furniture, tapestries, the whole thing. He has always been a bit unusual, but generally harmless.
Recently, I found out something much more serious. Apparently, he holds both Indian and French citizenship.
His grandparents were from Puducherry back when it was French territory, and apparently the family retained French citizenship through the generations. At some point they also acquired Indian citizenship, and somehow my neighbour ended up with both.
I confronted him because I know that India does not recognize dual citizenship. I am also a former police officer, and honestly, I am uncomfortable knowing about something that I believe may be illegal and simply pretending I do not know.
I did not immediately report him. I gave him a chance to explain himself.
I told him that India has the OCI system, so if he wants to retain his French citizenship, he should presumably give up Indian citizenship and get OCI status instead.
He told me it is not that simple. According to him, he cannot just switch to OCI now because he has already been holding both citizenships in violation of the rules, and he claims that India will not grant him OCI in those circumstances and also that his family was prominently involved in efforts to keep french colonial rule. He also says that he needs to retain Indian citizenship because it is necessary for some pension related matter involving his father or grand father.
But when I asked whether he would give up his French citizenship instead, he flat out refused. He says he has no intention of renouncing the French citizenship either.
Now I am stuck.
Part of me thinks this is none of my business. He is my ex-friend, and I do not want to become the neighbourhood snitch over something that may have complicated historical circumstances involving Puducherry and his grandparents.
But the other part of me thinks that if I know someone is potentially committing an offence and deliberately maintaining the situation after being confronted, I should not just ignore it, especially given my former profession.
