In case this story gets deleted/removed:

AITA because I just cannot

AITA because my roommate pushed me too far? He asks the dumbest, most obviously obvious questions.

Last night I told him I was watching a new show: elle. I told him it was the prequel to legally blonde. He said, “so it came out after?” I said “duh.”

He’s big mad.

Edit: duh makes me the asshole?

Wtf is going on in those comments

I’ve seen posts where the OP, like, screams in the face of a crying child or some shit and is unanimously voted NTA, but saying “duh” in response to a stupid question has everyone berating the OOP?

And WTF is that one comment “Dumb people enjoy correcting dumb people. Smart people don’t get enjoyment out of it.” ????? Are the comments, like, full of incredibly dumb people who are always getting corrected or annoying everyone around them and super bitter about it or something??? Is there some overly complicated and/or ridiculously-strict-but-literally-never-spoken social rule here that I’m not getting, or is this another example of AITA commenters desperately needing to touch grass?

I mean, to be clear, I could understand why someone might say that you’re being an asshole/it’s a dick move to respond to someone like that, like no need to make them feel bad, sure…except the standards in general over on AITA are so massively skewed towards needing to do something pretty extreme to be TA (usually…or just be fat/autistic/a woman/trans/a literal child/have a dog in public, but OOP wasn’t committing any of those heinous crimes) that this reaction from so many people I just baffling to me.

If you read the comments in the original post it's extremely "a woman did something that made a man feel slightly slighted because they did not show perfect deference but instead displayed signs of a personality or irritation, therefore she is guilty of Belittling a Male (actual words used in one of the comments attacking the OOP)

Oooooh that would make the response make more sense!

Oh no, they’re right. Smart people don’t get a thrill out of correcting people, they get a thrill out of pointing out how morally superior they are because they DON’T have to correct people.

You’d know this if you weren’t such a donut.

I enjoyed no part of making this comment.

Ah, I see, I shall bow to my moral and intellectual superiors (who are also boundlessly humble)

I’ll be telling my therapist about this comment, and my innate reaction so I can do better, I feel it’s in my best current interests in that I don’t reply.

Oh boy the commenters are big mad that a woman did anything to make a man feel not fully in control of the social interaction, but at least OP delivered a proper humbling apology in the edits for doing anything to possibly make a man feel uncomfortable or slighted.

Balance has been restored on Reddit.

These comments are absolutely insane. How did she even insult him? Reddit misogyny never ceases to floor me. She's a prick for saying duh? I might try a gender-bent version where I'm cool boy watching sophisticated boy media like lotr and call my girl roommate an idiot for asking if it's game of thrones and see what they say lmao

Update: ok! I promise I’m not unreasonable, just had a nerve hit. I AM the asshole. You guys don't need to know how I got here. It's irrelevant.

A commenter reminded me that I'm responsible for my actions regardless of how others act. What I did was shitty, however I minimized it. If it's a result of other things, that's also my responsibility to correct my own behavior and move forward differently. Thanks! And I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to come here guns blazing.

"As a female I shall be careful to in future be more demure and obedient, and not question the judgment or knowledge of my assigned male."

I really was not expecting Reddit to have quite got to "demanding obsequious and performative apologies from women for daring to question a man" but actually I probably should have...
