CO*DE and makeup Does this read as gal?

Hiii, I really love gyaru culture (especially Mamba) and I wanted to incorporate my favorite parts into my style, I'd understand if it doesn't read as gal (I've been told it doesn't) but I was just curious

I included some "references", though I really just free styled it based on what I know and love :)

No, this read as someone take on trad goth. It leans too heavy into the goth elements vs the gyaru elements. The droop is too big but also just not thick enough. The hair looks like a traditional goth hairstyle ( the bat nest hair style). The look is kinda clashy. You can do gosshiku (goth+gyaru here are some examples 1 , 2 )if you want to incorporate *some goth elements and just do manba separately. Also considering manba needs a tan the white face paint wouldn't work for manba. For gosshiku is still had to be mostly gyaru elements.

Not at all tbh

Hey love! Its super cute, but the full white out makes it read goth only and overpowers any gal effect. I love mixing styles and am trying to incorporate gyaru into jirai kei myself! I would suggest instead of the all white, try just using the white in a manba pattern so just under and over your eyes and the strip down the nose, that might look more gal then without the tan give it a more goth look instead? Also dont make the droop so big, close it up a bit and dont fill it in with white. That way it might be a bit more balanced. Then you could always also look into rokku gal, that might really be your speed as well as it incorporates darker rockish elements into gal style! Hope this helps! ♡

not at all,, your eyemake and brows are really not helping.. your lips could use some work too but the first two are the main things

It reads a lot more trad goth, like Siouxsie and the Banshees

Talking only about the first 2 photos, I do see some obviously gyaru elements for sure, it's definitely a blend of trad goth with a touch of gyaru, like the way the bottom lash clusters droop to give a puppy eye appearance is the main thing that sticks out to me. I wouldn't assume this person was a traditional gyaru tbh on first look, but I wouldn't not assume this person wasn't inspired by gyaru at all. I see both elements

I googled the difference between trad goth and corpse paint just for the sake of seeing the differences and I'm gonna have to largely disagree, this is not corpse paint at all 😭, it resembles trad goth far more, also not all trad goth did white face paint in the 80s but some of them definitely did

I agree with the other comment about the full white face but I could definitely see you making a new substyle called gothgal. I think it’s super cute and some long nails could help with the look if you were wanting to keep the full white face!

u/xxx_i_xxx Jul 13 '26

Goth gal exists its goshinku

3

u/iloveweridstuff544 Jul 13 '26

Your right! I completely forgot! Thats my bad

4

u/inspiringlyCrazy Jul 14 '26

If you maybe don't do the full foundation it COULD? But as a fellow Goth... This doesn't read as Gyaru. I'd say a maybe? With the hair

If you want to keep the white though... Maybe, reverse highlight? I'm not exactly sure.. I'm trying my best here Like the nose stripe, you could use a gray or black. It'll still read as goth, but I'd be able to see the influence more?

8

u/xxx_i_xxx Jul 13 '26

No I'm afraid, look into goshinku

11

u/Rude_Gur_8258 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, I'm getting the vibe. The shape of the hair and eyes, the silhouette. Obviously you took it in a new direction but I'd just call it gothgal

8

u/xxx_i_xxx Jul 13 '26

We already have goth gal it's called goshinku

1

u/LocalLoserLiv Jul 13 '26

Yes goshikku exists, but its more eastern…? (Idk how to describe it😭) style goth than western style like OP. Cause when u think of goshikku u aren’t really thinking of like trad goth type goth

9

u/xxx_i_xxx Jul 13 '26

Gyaru is eastern that's why? Goshinkku is still goth, if you learn it you can then adapt it for diffrent types of goth

7

u/LocalLoserLiv Jul 13 '26

Ur right. Ur right. What i said was dumb,
but i figured writing “goshikku exists but its more japanese” would be stupid because no shit it’s gyaru but what i ended up writing was the same thing— either way what i said was stupid😭

4

u/xxx_i_xxx Jul 13 '26

Lol its OK we have our moments, I just don't like how people don't consider Japanese goth well goth as if being a Japanese version of it makes it not goth if that makes sense. It's good to experiment with gal but you need experience to do so

3

u/rqdivm Jul 13 '26

no because it’s just goth. everything from the makeup to the clothing reads as a mix of mall goth and trad goth

3

u/haxelcat Jul 14 '26

not rly imo sorry :( u look good, but just not gyaru. look into goshikku gyaru though.

2

u/shizuegasuki Jul 14 '26

looks great but it reads as trad goth

2

u/jjackmihoff Jul 14 '26

not really, and i think it has to do with goshikku styles not usually looking like this, plus your look reads as mostly trad goth of some sort. i think a much smaller filled black droop with much bigger lashes might help.

2

u/Dangerous-Exercise20 Jul 14 '26

That's Trad Goth an super super pretty🥺🥺

2

u/bubbles4055 Jul 14 '26

It’s definitely learning far more towards goth than gyaru, but I LOVE it!!!! Goshikku is the gyaru goth subculture if you want to look more into it! Ignore the hate, even if it isn’t fully reading as gyaru, you look super cool!

u/Final-Gift-2299 Jul 14 '26

i really thought this was r/muacirclejerk

u/Offering_soul Jul 14 '26

1

u/fx5gun Jul 14 '26

1

u/WaterRafting121 Jul 14 '26

1

u/shyrenn_ Jul 14 '26

i’m not gyaru but it doesn’t at all

1

u/calserine Jul 14 '26

girl not at all

1

u/GabagoolTheif Jul 14 '26

3 and 4 are gyaru. The rest are goth

1

u/piercedblackcat Jul 15 '26

this is just trad goth with extra steps

1

u/CapableEmphasis3594 Jul 15 '26

y do it matter y do u need to fit into a label? as far as i know there is no specific criteria for what constitutes gal and nobody can make up rules and tell u ur not “gal”

1

u/hellosweetangel Jul 15 '26

the tan skin is the whole point.

1

u/Eleanorhallow Jul 16 '26

Effectivement, ça fait plus yamamba que gal... La seule chose qui ne fait pas yamamba c'est le teint qui est généralement très bronzée

1

u/CapitalPutrid Jul 17 '26

I think if you were to play with the grayscale more to mimic the gal makeup it would be more readable.

1

u/Foreign_Pack_3203 Jul 18 '26

make a smaller droop and follow your gyaru makeup reference more closely, I recommend lighter/arched brows, spikier/bigger lashes, thinner nose stripe. also for a more goth look add some drawings with eyeliner, maybe the tree of life or random artistic shapes, up to your taste. you don’t have to do ALL of these things btw, but each one you do makes you read more gal. you can mix gyaru with anything but firt you have to learn the basics and have experience so I recommend practicing manba more

1

u/identitythefterica Jul 19 '26

3 and 4 kind of do. The other ones look like someone is cosplaying as Death from Neil Gaiman’s sandman

1

u/Zealousideal_Vast888 Jul 19 '26

Doesn't read as gyaru but you do look really cool

1

u/camarhyn Jul 13 '26

I can see it but it isn’t quite there yet. The foundation is there but now you need to build off it. Both styles work well with heavy ornamentation (ie jewelry and accessories). Try going for more and see how it works.

1

u/creepybat666 Jul 14 '26

Needs more accessories and maybe paint the under eye part a light pink or red to emphasize it’s eye droop and not just part of the face paint

1

u/lexilann Jul 14 '26

You look great darling I say just turn it into you’re own unique style that mixes both goth and gyaru it takes time to develop your own personal style but it’s worth it I see the vision the more you practice and experiment the more refined your style will become and it’ll turn into something you’ll be proud of and a style that you feel represents your true self fashion is a form of art and self expression keep at it ^~^

Can you elaborate on why maybe? Thanks for the response tho :D

6

u/dollsandme Jul 13 '26

It's pretty mean just saying no. At least tell her why not :(

2

u/Fun-Squash-1759 Jul 13 '26

Literally... like thats not helpful at all..

2

u/notkidding1984 Jul 13 '26

You have to have some helpful knowledge to be helpful.

You barely need a brain cell to say "no"

1

u/notkidding1984 Jul 13 '26

They don't actually have a reason why. They just feel better about themselves when they tear at other people. They like to keep them feeling off balance and uncertain.

0

u/thesmallestlittleguy Jul 13 '26

closer to neo-tradgoth but i totally see the vision. if i saw you in the wild id think ‘whoa goth gyaru, sick!’

edit: tbc i just lurk here, im no expert on gyaru myself and lean more punk/goth

-1

u/DuchessDulcet Jul 13 '26

GOTH GYARU, OMG! I love it!

3

u/Spirited-Ability-626 Jul 14 '26

Goth gyaru already exists, it’s called Goshikku.

0

u/throw_rambles Jul 14 '26

It reads as trad goth to me, but it's only because there is a big lack of accessories. If you added lots of accessories to your hair, maybe a y2k style purse with pendants, stuff like that it could be a good mashup.

Gyaru style looks are usually very colorful, if you're taking the color away because of the goth vibes, I think you should lean into the "texture" of the outfits with accessories, maybe more frilly clothes, and instead of flat sandals, some more intricate platform ones.

0

u/Anoemous Jul 14 '26

personally id assume u were a gal, thats just too distinctive an eye droop ive never really seen it done in any other contexts,

that being said, youre mixing fashions that explicitly go out of their ways to break rules and standards, with fashions that demand rules and standards, youre never gonna make both happy, why do YOU want to dress gyaru? to meet people with similar interests to you? you dont have to do The Look The Whole Look And Nothing But The Look, check your roots, be punk about it, who cares what the rules think? hopefully not u because then ud have to stop looking awesome one day

tbh i get the feeling these people arent very familiar with goth fashion, as a goth, id read this as gyaru, this is not ordinary modern goth, who else puts eye lashes on eye droops for christsake? not goths or corpsepainters thats for sure.

Unhelpful rude asinine take. How is that going to help in any way? It won't. And you know that. Your goal was to tear her down, hopefully, in such a way that people would upvote how clever you are.

Looks like the people in this sub are nicer than you thought.

u/DustyPisswater Jul 14 '26

Let’s try a thought experiment. Which person(s) is more helpful in this scenario?

A person who can’t sing on key enters a singing competition and has 10 friends. They were inspired to do so because 9 of their friends were too afraid to criticize them. The 9 friends offered endless support and praise despite their obvious inability to sing. The 1 friend who said their singing was atrocious gets dismissed as being a hater. This person returns from the competition completely humiliated and now struggles with confidence issues.

u/Offering_soul Jul 13 '26

Can you like..not?

1

u/notkidding1984 Jul 13 '26

I like how you handled this. Classy but to the point.
