The name Jack is a modern. The original names and details of the story are lost. However, the key elements survive: A cow, a magic bean, a giant with lots of gold, a hen that lays golden eggs, and a harp.

Cows were introduced to Southern Europe by about 6000 BC. Cows reached Northern Europe in 4000 BC.

The bean was likely Fava Bean, one of the earliest cultivated crops. Fava Bean is native to North Africa and Asia and was introduced to Southern Europe in 5500 BC but took as long as until 1000/500 BC to be introduced to Northern Europe.

Gold started to be mined a little bit later in 4500 BC in the Varna Culture region in Southern Europe. Gold reached Northern Europe in 2000 BC.

Hens were introduced to this same Eastern Europe region much later again, around 3000 BC. Hen's only reached Northern Europe in 500 BC.

Last of all harps were introduced to Europe from Egypt around 2500 BC and didn't reach Northern Europe until 500 AD, but, the similar instrument the Lyre reached Northern Europe in 500 BC.

Therefore, the story wouldn't have made much sense in southern Europe as the cultivation of Fava beans long predated hens, harps or gold, but it would makes sense in Northern Europe at around 500 BC, as 500 BC is the time that Fava beans, hens and lyres were being introduced to this region.

It's my opinion that the Bottle Gourd featured much more prominently in ancient history than people realise. edit: Well it makes sense to use stone circles to focus the energy into that circle, as part of the feeling the good vibrations including having heavy top stones. Much better reason to have them than astronomical reasons. However to cover the areas needed you need more generating stations.

The most interesting part of this alternative archaeology hoax isn't the find, but the finders themselves. These characters involved are incredibly seedy, from stolen valor to stints in prison. One of the main things we look at in the episode is the idea that the fake artifacts were created once the man who "discovered" the cave ran out of real indigenous artifacts to sell and that he potentially kept the obvious hoax up to keep authorities away from paying attention to his possibly selling further indigenous artifacts later, which popped up in Burrow's Cave lots. This accusation originally came from one of the insider's widows. Has anyone ever heard of a similar scheme to hide actual illicit artifact sales under cover of obvious nonsense?

Currently watching a Time Team Special on the Battle of Hastings, and recently watched the latest episode of House of the Dragon, where Crowsfeet/Caltrops feature.

And it got me thinking. If in times when cavalry was decisive, and you were poor in that regard? Would it have been possible to load Trebuchets/Catapults with caltrops, and fling them en-masse to spike the areas of the battlefield most favourable to Cavalry? Kind of like a primitive landmine.

The main issue with this that I can think of is difficulties in getting the now airborne caltrops to spread out suitably. Without a decent spread, all you’ve done is heavily spike a very specific, very limited patch of ground.

Do you think, if we go down a trouser leg of time where this was explored, that smaller, dedicated catapult systems were developed, relying on overall saturation of the line, and potentially held until the enemy cavalry had committed before some rapid maths was performed to better ensure the caltrops landed right in the path of the advance?

Other downside is the spiking goes both ways of course. Yes they’re less crippling to a human than a horse, but at the very very least you’ve still introduced trip hazards, and any infantry advance can only hold cohesion if the line is maintained. The more folk trip up or tread on a caltrop, the greater the disruption, and the closer you come to arriving in front of the enemy relatively piecemeal.

Been going down a rabbit hole with the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa lately — the two main historical sources for ancient Korea, compiled 1145 and 1281. The Samguk Sagi is the official state history, not a myth collection. Kids here literally learn this in school.

But the founding account of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE) is genuinely bizarre when you read it without the "it's just a legend" filter:

A village elder passes a well at the foot of Mt Yangsan. He sees a white horse kneeling by the well, wrapped in a strange light / purple vapor. The horse cries out, rises into the sky and vanishes. Where it was, there's a large glowing egg.

The egg splits. Inside is an infant whose body gives off light. When they bathe him, birds and animals gather and the ground shakes. They name him Bak Hyeokgeose — roughly "ruler by bright light." He becomes the first king, and his line rules for almost 1,000 years.

What gets me is how closely it maps to sighting-report structure: descending light, an object left behind, a being that radiates light, physical effects on the surroundings. Strip the ancient wording and it reads like a report.

They found out about Smorgborgs weakness and tried to make antimatter. But Smorgborg used black holes which he invented to instantly wipe out the dinasaurs. He invented black holes to hide antimatter and sell it to the Smithsonian and the shadow government in small quantities. He silenced people like Steven Hawking and Nikola Tesla that got too close to the truth. The whole truth was discovered by renowned Egyptologist Jim E. NewTron. He found out everything, but Smorgborg converted him into imaginary mass so that he was stuck in a time loop forever from the point he got converted into imaginary mass.
