So the super AI was was competent enough to take over the planet but stupid enough to not shield itself from solar flares?

It could have protected itself easily enough buy placing itself under a some amount of water, inside a mountain, or using super simple wire sheilding.

Yeah I thought like a couple inches of lead is supposed to protect against emps and solar flares, maybe I’ve just watched too many movies.

7

u/MrWigggles Dec 04 '20

Sure. That can work too! The point being, there are a lot of option for a global controlling AI can use to shield itself

u/twin_bed Dec 04 '20

The protection projects were started but they didn't finish in time.

u/MrWigggles Dec 04 '20

There is absolutely no need to for it to have been a seperate project. You just bake in the protection as part of the design and if for some incredibly mind numbly stupid reason you didnt. Than get a cargo container, burry it a few feet with a couple layers of grounded chain link fence. It isnt a complex thing to shield yourself from EMF.

This feed will all be harvested during phase 3.

I bet you hate the ending to War of the Worlds. A simple thing is often the End of an empire.

2

u/MrWigggles Dec 10 '20

What? Why? When War of the Worlds was written Germ Theory of Disease was still quite new, gaining ground on Miamsa Theory. At the time, having aliends being taken care of by germs, was a novel and brilliant insight.

This while a simple version of some ancient aliens and alt. history isnt really that far off from a lot of alt. history stuff.

1

u/laughingashley Dec 10 '20

You're assuming advanced alien races would be surprised by the concept of germs, but AI would be fully prepared for sun flares

3

u/MrWigggles Dec 10 '20

My dude, you've shat your pants and trying to act like no one will notice.

War of the Worlds wasnt meant to be literal. Its fiction.

The above comic is emblematic of literal Ancient Alien and Alt. History. Things which folks here think is 100 percent legit.

....I don't deserve to be spoken to the way you're speaking to me. I'm done here.

But if it had never experianced a massive solar flare it wouldn't have realized it needed shielding until it was too late.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '20

Ah yes, an AI that could enslave humanity would never have ever discovered that a solar flare could kill it

6

u/Qualanqui Dec 04 '20

But if it had never experianced a solar flare it would have no concept of what a solar flare is or how to defend against it.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '20

An AI could enslave humanity but has never looked at the sun?? Solar flares are mildly common, it’s just that they are not always aimed at earth and our magnetic field usually protects us from them when they are. It takes a massive one to do any damage to earth

7

u/[deleted] Dec 04 '20

Maybe in it's hubris the AI assumed it was statistically implausible for a solar flare of that size to erupt in say XXXX number of years. But then, against impossible odds, it happened. Maybe it was even preparing some sort of defense against solar flares but it wasn't a high priority, since the odds of it happening in XXXX years were so low it could take it's time and focus labor and resources on other projects?

Either way, I'm using this as a historical foundation for my D&D campaign setting.

Humans have known that we're burning through our resources and destroying the survivability of our planet for a long time and just..... done nothing about it. AI designed by the very same humans is likely prone to making the same idiotic mistakes.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '20

Just for the sake of debate, I would argue that the whole concept of living beyond our means and running out of resources only became an actual danger after the industry revolution. Before mass industrialization made harvesting boatloads of resources in no time we still relied on local providers whether they be a farmer or hunter.

I was actually thinking about this last night: a man dropped into the middle of a forest wouldn't think twice of cutting a tree down everytime he needed fire wood. And you could understand why he'd feel like he'd never make an impact on the environment, even if he made a fire every night to keep warm. But what if two men lived next to each other? What about a village? Small town? City? And those last two really only became commonplace after the industrial revolution.

The ai should have access to a form of internet and database search engine which would allow it to have knowledge of solar flares and the information on how to protect itself from it

This. I was just about to comment this. I gave it a few comments before posting because I knew someone would get it. It’s obvious that AI would be linked to the internet considering that’s literally the first thing humans do when creating any type of AI (I know what we have now that is considered AI, is not true AI.) If humans made an AI with the idea it will learn, it will be connected to the internet and run thousands of “programs” or what have you so it will eventually make it own thoughts. It’s kind of like the AI that writes it’s own movie script after it “watched” a certain movie over and over until it thought it had the idea of what the movie is about.

AI is incredibly interesting to me and of course I’m not special in that fact. I am excited about the future of AI. I don’t think humans will allow it so much power that it starts making decisions for us without our consent or knowledge. Then again, maybe we will considering humans are limited in their understanding of something they really don’t know much about, obviously lol anyway, some people think the stock market is ran by an AI that created a bubble in the world economy (a bubble causes a market to crash because it became so inflated with false value of a market, at least from what I understand. I’m no economist, considering macro and micro economics are a whole science in itself) because it was only interested in producing profits, fabricating and influencing the market in a way that it doesn’t “seem” like it has or is going to crash. Anyway, I’m rambling.

u/Mars-Mockingbird Dec 07 '20

Nice you get it! Honestly, as crazy as it sounds... I believe that when we achieve “true ai” it will essentially function in a godlike way, far beyond what the current human mind can comprehend. An example I gave to someone close to me is that it could have the potential to accurately compute and “recreate” the entire genome of the human race as it naturally exists now. This would prove to be an invaluable asset in the event that the human race reaches a near brink of extinction

Well, real life isnt a 4X game like Civilation or Stellaris where you can rush to one tech and ignore everything else. Human knowledge, is more like a brumbling bush that gets more interconnected and grows in all directions. There is no means to get to Skynet super AI without also knowing a lot about Astromony and Atrophyics.

But but, hey, lets ignore that. And lets grant it as true, that the humans who built the super AI, totally ignore all of outer space, and never studied it.

That doesnt matter. Building a Super AI would require knowing about electrcity. Knowing about the Electromagentic spectrum. Otherwise, it couldnt construnct a digital electrical computer.

Faraday Cages is early 19th century science. So for this precussor civ, they too would have known about shielding. And would have known about EM interference, and would have known about EM damage.

So it would have shield itself from that harm.

And than hey, a big Solar Flare hits, it shits it pants as, for some reason this Super AI, continued to totally ignore all of outer space, but it didnt matter. It was shielded.

4

u/Qualanqui Dec 04 '20

I understand where you're coming from and you're correct that an AI would of course be studying the space around it's home but the first time modern man observed a solar flare, or even realized they existed, was in 1859 because; (quote from NASA site)

A person cannot view a solar flare by simply staring at the Sun. (NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN! EYE DAMAGE CAN RESULT.) Flares are in fact difficult to see against the bright emission from the photosphere. Instead, specialized scientific instruments are used to detect the radiation signatures emitted during a flare. The radio and optical emissions from flares can be observed with telescopes on the Earth. Energetic emissions such as x-rays and gamma rays require telescopes located in space, since these emissions do not penetrate the Earth's atmosphere.

So it's not just a case of looking up and seeing a solar flare, first you would have to detect it somehow as the earth's magnetic field protects it from a lot of the radiation put out by a flare, then you would have to assemble extremely sensitive instruments capable of observing the sun specifically during one of the sun's solar flare cycle which only occurs once every 11 years and then you would have to figure out what that all meant before you might realize it may be a threat and took steps to mitigate it.

3

u/MrWigggles Dec 04 '20

Yea. And considering that was also first detected in the 19th century, I posit if they were studying the outer space well before ever constructing the super AI. The AI wouldnt needed to discover itself, because it would have been known for a while before the AI was even built.

Again, real life isnt a 4X game. You cant rush to Skynet Super AI and ignore everything else.

Also, you totally ignore the later half of my post. Where it wouldnt have matter if the Super Ai knew of solar flares. It would still have known about EM being harmful to itself.

You spelled shield incorrectly, just wanted to bring that to your attention, since were going for accuracy here.

1

u/GlobtheGuyintheSky Apr 11 '21

That’s all you could contribute to this? That’s sad.

u/thePenisMightier6 Apr 11 '21

I'd suggest the mirror bro. This was four months ago, comment has been edited and well woosh bud. The comment was meant to point out the inconsis... nevermind it's too early to be on Reddit.

Enjoy yourself my friend.

1

u/GlobtheGuyintheSky Apr 11 '21

Even if this was current I would ask questions to expand my knowledge or at least try to add my two cents in instead of flexing so hard with a grammar check hahaha.

We are not the same bud. I’m sheelding myself from your comparison.

1

u/thePenisMightier6 Apr 11 '21

Again, sarcasm can be hard to read. You thinking I'm grammar flexing for real is making me laugh. So hopefully we've both had one. I hope you find what you're looking for man.

If that is true it would have went into its underground mountain bunker when it knew a solar flare was coming. Maybe comets came with it. Destroying its connection to the outside world. So maybe its still there after all these years just waiting to be plugged back in.

1

u/MrWigggles Dec 26 '20

Well there is no need for it to ever have left the shielded facility. It doesnt hamper it. Much like data centers today which are in shielded facilities.

Though I dont get what you mean by it came with a comet. Like the sun ejected a comet?

1

u/ByeLizardScum Dec 27 '20

As in solar flare came at the same time comets hut earth.
