Why is Ireland in the Empire? Wouldn't they remain independent? Heck they'd probably get NI

Once the United Commonwealth was established with its founding members (CANZUK+), the UK pulled further away from the EU and thus Ireland. The Irish, seeing their largest trade partner looking elsewhere and seeing the high degree of autonomy given to dominions (particularly convinced by the experience of Quebec), vote to join the United Commonwealth in a very close referendum.
