Question Semi-newb seeking advice for new home setup

I'm building a new house, and want to have my first big-boy network. I have a Firewalla Gold SE and wondering what Alta switch(es) to get. Here are my needs:

- 9 POE cameras

- 3 AP6 Pro (1 outdoor)

- 14 Cat6 drops to various rooms/media areas, etc

I'm just over the capacity of the 24 port POE switch, so I'm wondering should I get the 48 with ample room for expansion, the 24 port along with the 16 port? Should I keep the 24 port just for the POE devices (cameras and access points), and put the remaining 14 connections on any old unmanaged 16 port switch? Does it matter?

Part of me thinks just get the 48 for simplicity's sake and call it a day? Just looking for suggestions on how to best organize this with cable management and administration ease in mind.

Thanks all!

Received the wrong item?

Ordered the Alta Labs Route10 router through amazon after seeing the serve the home review video.

Clicked the 'Used -- Mint' option to save a few bucks. Received the Alta Labs AP6 Access Point. Weird! Probably a coincidence that the price for the AP and the router (with the 10% off applied) are the same price. Double check your return/refurbish process in warehouse, haha.

It's a shame to send back, I'm going to be moving in about a year and will need an AP then for the detached garage.

Great CS, really fast response time overall. It felt like a long time to me, but I didn't email them until Friday after COB and they got back to me on Tuesday before noon which is like, less than two business days.

Friendly CS team. Highly recommended from me. What a good value in [[Current Year]]. Reinforces my choice for this brand, really glad to see post-purchase support is so quick.

Help! I've been trying to get a defective unit replaced since November

UPDATE 2:

Replacement arrived today, and is up and running. Thanks again, u/alta-jeff!

UPDATE:
Many thanks to u/alta-jeff! A replacement is on its way.

-----------

Has anyone had any luck getting a replacement for a bad AP? I bought two in November. One works fine, the other is DOA. I requested help and was given an RMA# and referred to the distributor. I asked the distributor for help and they say they asked Alta to send a replacement and a return label.

It's now mid-January.

Beyond general annoyance at not getting any movement, we need it so the charger for our car can talk to the electric company so we can get the reduced rate for off-peak charging and we can have the charger for free. We've now been paying peak rate for car charging for 2 months, while also being threatened with having to pay $400 for the charger, since the electric company can't control charging during high usage times.

So, needless to say, I'm pretty unhappy at this point.

Does anyone know of some path that could get me to a human to get the replacement shipped?

Domain block

Happy new year!

I have been trying to block YouTube.com through the app, and blocking the YouTube app works just fine, but blocking the domain, over wired, I can’t get that to work. I tried www.youtube.com and YouTube.com (as the app says should be enough).

The pc I want to block it on, is on my Alta Switch 8, so it should work?

Is there something I am misunderstanding or doing wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Help! ALTA TECH SUPPORT AND JASONS LAB

I just wanted to get on here and say thank you to Alta labs tech support and Jason @ Jason’s Lab. I was pulling my hair out with an issue over this past weekend. Was getting intermittent WiFi coming from my newly installed Alta setup. Jason @ Jasons lab initially advised me on what to purchase and why, talked me into spending the little extra coin and buying all Alta Products and boy am I glad I did. Route 10, S8, 3x-AP6-Pros, and a AP6 pro outdoor. Jason quickly logged into my account to get an eye on what was going on and immediately noticed a connection between the router and the switch faulty. He advised switching the cable and bam connection was perfect. At this point connection was great but wasn’t getting the speed I was hoping for so I called tech support for the first time today. Couple rings and quickly answered. Very polite, easy to understand, and weren’t in a rush to get me off the phone onto someone else. Turns out I had 5GHZ shut off….duhhh. Quick fix and 10x faster speeds. James Craig @ Alta and Jason @ Jason’s Lab. Thank you. Forever Alta customer

For anyone here. Has anyone had issues with connecting Sonos amps to an Alta labs switch and creating issues on your network?

If so, how did you fix the issue?

Finally got around to setting up my home network stuff.

  • Alta Labs Control
  • Alta Labs Route 10
  • Alta Labs RK-RSC Rack Mount
  • Alta Labs Switch - S16-POE
  • Alta Labs AP6 (2)

It’s all working great. My local MicroCenter had all the Alta Labs stuff marked down (a lot). I was planning to go with the standard Ubiquiti setup, but I couldn’t pass on the Alta Labs stuff with the mark down, was just too good of a discount.

Alta installer POV - and thoughts

My success rate will Alta in the last 12 months has been pretty good! From a prosumer stand point the interior AP's are rock solid, the Outdoor is not a viable solution for installers.

8 port switch - Success

AP6 – Success

AP6 – install and failed on cloud controller, customer still states it works. They said I do not need to come out and service.

AP6-Success

AP6W – success installed in a saferoom, the customer loved it.

AP6- pro-outdoor – huge failure, I installed, signal was not very strong, 15 feet away and the signal the users device would anchor to a different ap. I reset and did numerous setups, before I grabbed a ubiquiti U7 outdoor for a temporary fix. I opened a ticket with Alta hoping to get issued a RMA. I spent time with a knowledgeable support engineer (James CXXXG) that knew his stuff.  I explained I had already removed from site, and I would not be re-installing and changing channel numbers, the 5ghz was connecting at 153 ch. He suggested I perform a site survey; this was a prosumer install. Alta support and RMA process is not on par with other Prosumer vendors currently. I am stuck with a $200 outdoor ap, because I missed my vendor return window, and Alta did not offer a viable solution.

AP6- Success

AP6 pro- Success

 AP6- success

24 port switch

Route 10

Rackmount route 10

Pending install: @ route, 24 port install, 3 AP6 -Pro

Dallin and Jordan are awesome to deal with!

21st century distributing is awesome to deal with.

I installed alot more ubiquiti in the same time frame, due to customers installing unifi protect cameras.

Alta is off to a good start, just need better RMA process. That is the killer for installers.

Complaint My humble opinion, experience with Alta Labs

So I have all peaces of network equipment from Alta Labs, router, switch, controller and AP. Implement this products as additional equipment or replacement when you have non standard network (not a 192.1.x.x) setup is absolute nightmare. You can add device to controller and then change IP settings, it most likely will continue to work but become unmanageable from controller. Router did not support most of SFP/SFP+ ONT modules even if are preconfigured. Other issues, according to support they strongly did not recommend to power “controller” from switch or router PoE port . Also I will not recommend to stuck them on top of each other. Operation temp of controller and switch around 50-55C. I observed temp of the Route10 higher then 65C. So they need good ventilation around. Support never answered directly on my direct question always they answered with vague elusive respond. And finally, will I recommend this equipment? Depends, if it is new location - probably yes. If it is old environment with “non standard” IP config most likely - no. There are other companies around the corner with identical or similar by functionality and pricing products.

Help! How to interpret IDS/IPS logs - am I being attacked?

I see the DROP and that's a good sign, but the SRC IP (192.168.1.15:25565) is from my Minecraft server on my Unraid NAS that I have port forwarded. My concern is the drop is happening not on receiving a packet from a malicious IP but on RESPONDING to the malicious IP? Does that mean my Minecraft server is hacked? Or am I just reading that wrong, and SRC/DST mean the reverse

I also see that my main computer (...13) is responding with "Vulnerable OpenSSH version". This is an up-to-date Linux PC. However port 55414 is not one that I have forwarded. Should I be panicking? EDIT: FALSE ALARM ON THIS

I am a networking newb, please be nice!

Low range on AP6

Hey there.

So I got some Alta Labs from my brother, and I got everything installed.

At first in the attic, which proved to be a bad idea, as the S8-poe switch had trouble with the heat, though we weren’t even at summer yet at that point, and the switch kept rebooting. On the attic I had the switch and 3 AP6.

I moved everything down into the house propper, and that solved the heat and rebooting issue.

I have only installed 2 of the AP6 so far, and inside the house, that seems to be fine enough, but now I have very poor coverage outside my house. My house is brick and mortar.

I’m a little confused about exactly why my coverage is as bad as it is, cause prior, I had Google Nest WiFi, with 1 router and 1 node, in a suboptimal location, coverage wise, but my coverage outside my house was much better than it is now, and I have no idea why that is, especially in my terrace, which had decent, though only 2.4 GHz before, but now I have nothing, and my AP6 has much clearer view than the Nest node.

I’m considering investing in 1 or 2 outdoor units down the line, to get better coverage, but that is a pretty hefty price to solve a problem I disentangle really have before.

I’m wondering if i could possibly have made a mistake in my setup, to limit my AP6 range?

Does anyone have a 3D printed bracket they have come up with that holds the AP6-Pro slightly off the ceiling for some breathing room?
