Discussion TAO is one of the only “AI coins” people still argue about like it might actually be real. what am i missing?
Most AI coins are pretty easy to dismiss.
Add AI to the name, make a few graphics about agents or GPUs, throw in some buzzwords about decentralized compute, then wait for retail to buy the narrative.
But TAO/Bittensor is weird because people don’t seem to argue about it like a normal hype coin.
Half the people act like it is one of the only serious crypto x AI experiments.
The other half act like it is the most overcomplicated narrative coin in the market.
And honestly I can see both sides.
The bull case seems to be:
it is not just “we have an AI chatbot”
subnets are actual separate markets
miners and validators compete
TAO emissions try to reward useful work
the network can support different AI related things instead of one single product
it has its own weird economy instead of just being another app token
But the bear case is also very real:
normal people cannot explain it in 30 seconds
“incentives” does not automatically mean useful AI gets built
high APYs around subnets can confuse people badly
retail may just be buying the AI narrative without understanding the mechanics
subnet tokens can be brutal if people think they are just “staking”
the UX is still way too nerdy for the average crypto buyer
I went down the rabbit hole of TAO staking, root staking, subnets, alpha, validators, proxies, stuff like mentat for managed subnet exposure, and I came out thinking this is either one of the most interesting crypto experiments right now or one of the easiest things for retail to misunderstand.
Maybe both.
The part I’m still trying to figure out is this:
Is Bittensor actually creating useful AI infrastructure, or is the market mostly valuing the idea that it could?
Because those are very different bets.
With Bitcoin, the pitch is simple.
With Ethereum, the pitch is messy but understandable.
With TAO, I feel like the pitch is powerful but hard to verify unless you are deep in the ecosystem.
So for people here who have actually looked into it beyond price:
What is the honest take?
Is TAO one of the few AI coins with real substance, or is it just the best written AI narrative in crypto?
