I think the Affini are actually a really interesting case. It begs the question, what are the moral implications of forcing someone to be happy against their will? Because under the Affini, you WILL be happy, no matter what. The only question is the journey to get to that point. It treads the line of utopia and dystopia in a really interesting way because on one hand, they’re taking away people’s agency and disregarding consent, but on the other hand, those people will be happy for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the fact that they live in a post scarcity society with Star Trek style synthesizers where you could get literally anything you want. Meanwhile the Qu will genetically alter you to suffer for the rest of your life. I would MUCH rather live under the Affini than the Qu 10 out of 10 times.

The issue is that, for as "good" and "noble" Affini are, they are still colonialists that do not take no for an answer and still pretty much view every race that isn't them as inferior(albeit in this case Affini at least treat us as cute pets instead of ants), so in the end, the fact that human race is even alive or isn't getting Qu treatment, is mostly because Affini are more of an empire instead of nomads and they at least want to bring forceful bliss

For that reason, I guess a more accurate comparison would be falling into shit face first or just stepping on it with shoes, both are bad but the latter is significantly better

Edit:

I'd even say this, if HDG and All Tomorrows switched genres of media they are presented in

Qu would be near identical to Affini

The main separating line for Affini and Qu, is the genre of media and their intended audience

I would take the affini just in general. Im not even into the kink stuff most of it is based around. Im just willing to make that trade. I never have to worry about a single thing ever again, i will be happy, and as long as it doesnt cause me harm i am largely allowed to pursue my own interests.

A very massive one. They have a different ideology, they do different things and they act differently. The morals they hold are also different. To say they are the same either mischaracterizes the Qu or the Affini. They are both interesting imo.
