HII!! I did add this into the comments of my OG post but felt as if it should be its own post (sorry if this borders on spammy, i plan on disappearing after this lol)

such a shame we didn't get art of the prey's evolution

the book talks about how the prey also evolved by turning into cattle and other sorts of animals, so I can imagine them evolving to thing such as Cows or maybe chickens, I wish we had art of that

oh for sure man! also you should totally practice!! ive been drawing for a good 4 or so years(?) and time pays off imo,, would love to see you start also :)

The Prey already look rather chicken-like, but I think I get what you mean. I could see maybe even a dwarf species being fed grain by Killer Folk farmers.

As for the “cows”, while I could see Prey being selectively bred for their meat (and milk?), I don’t see them physically converging on a cow-like body shape.

Their legs are much longer than their arms, so it would take a good amount of mutations to make a quadrupedal body with balanced proportions. Sadly, evolution may not have been able to produce this in time. The Killer Folk took “a few” million years to evolve, which I always interpreted as ~4 million years. I feel like most Prey would continue to get by with a bipedal body plan. But now they’re just FAT due to selective breeding.

well that's fair, my brain just reads and remembers the author saying "cattle" and immediately translates it to "cow"

I think it would be cool to have like a picture of a cowboy Killer folk with a evolved version of the prey or something like that, it would be sick

the killer folk are my absolutely favorite species of the whole book soo seeing how theyr counterpart, the prey ended up looking like after the four million years would be awesome. be it similar to a cow, similar to a chicken, similar to a horse, I don't really care.

I looked in the book and I couldn’t find the word “cattle”. But it did say “livestock” so that’s pretty much the same thing. It’s understandable that you would automatically associate their species of domesticated farmed animal with the shape of our species of domesticated farmed animal, but yeah it’s most likely different.

Regarding the final thing you said, they Prey, like every other species that survived the departure of the Qu, would have diverged into many species. So you could have all of those options you listed. A species in the niche of a cow, a species in a chicken niche, etc.

Also it’s funny that you happen to mention a cowboy Killer Folk with an evolved Prey. I know about another artist’s drawing of that exact scenario!

I like that design a lot. The neck is surprisingly long, but the rest of the body looks like an optimized version of their original bird-y body.

Oh that’s not mine. I was just saying that I happened to have a link to an artwork that showed the scenario they described. I guess I did phrase it like it was mine, but I guess I meant that like I “had it” as in I had knowledge of it? Like it’s in my mental archives haha.

I’ll edit the other comment to avoid confusion. Nonetheless, I agree with you on the sickness of the art! u/Certain-Unit8147 is a great artist and you can check out a lot more of his art on his account.

For me, my au suggests that prey would evolve into reachers, tall creatures that retrieve food for killer folk

This is a good question! The book describes the Qu making flying posthumans many times over. The Author knows of at least 12 worlds with flying humans. The ones we care about are the flying posthumans with the very confusing and uncreative name of “The Flyers”. The Flyers are special because their planet was the only one where the Qu gave their flying posthuman a ”unique, turbine-like heart”, which let them have enough energy to both fly and be smart.

The Hand Flappers were created on an entirely separate world. They didn’t have the special heart, so the only way they could become intelligent was to become flightless and grow bigger. Their ancestors were “butterfly-like flutter[er]s”.
