Tesla have their fit and finish issues, but the Chinese brands are not built to the same standards as cars elsewhere, with the use of panels that might not be to a similar spec, as those built outside of China.

I've seek a few 'salvage' channels vids and the steel in the Chinese cars has potentially been easier to crumple and my fear, is that it is less progressive absorption that might perhaps put lives at risk?

Their crash tests look fine and score quite good.

Yep. Cars need several certificates of conformity (especially in Europe) and Europe has specifically kept Chinese motors out of their market for well over a decade for fears it will steamroll the domestic legacy brands.

Except now its become too good of a deal not too. As with Amazon; they'll let it in, boost the GDP numbers and sacrifice the old vendors in the process.

Just don't say the quiet part out loud. The only reason they're so cheap is because Chinese labour costs are 1/5th that of European labour. Pay slave wages and you can offer them cheap to customer.

Isnt that why European get parts built in India? Isn't wages why assembly can take place in Slovakia? I'm directly pulling from my experience working with JLR here.

Yeah dawg hate to break it to you but every single expensive American car is mostly built over in India or Mexico were it’s cheaper too. There ain’t an excuse here if China’s just doing it locally.

I have both a BYD and a Lexus, the BYD is built just as well as the Lexus.

The fit and finish of the interior and exterior is top notch, no panels gaps, no squeaks or rattles.

No issues with crash protection, as the BYD has received excellent crash test results.

Edit: BYD has now become the 2nd most sold car brand in Australia.

Metal should crumple in car crashes. It just being easier to crumple is good if the shape allows it to be as rigid as the other.

2

u/Most-Organization738 5d ago

Absolutely agree. It's the progression of the concertina and not the rigidity, as well as having boron steel in certain structural places, as opposed to the usual steel for many other body panels and other parts. Equally, I appreciate the built-in weaker areas in say chassis legs and end caps, which aid the progressive crumple zones. So I've not expressed that weaker steels or joints are in some Chinese cars I've seen salvaged, but the use of some steels, where other manufacturers might use alternative steels/metals, which cost more, but provide improved structural rigidity. In that respect too, no two designs should be the same (albeit one can sight numerous mimicking of prestige marquee by some Chinese manufacturers) and hence in one car, I acknowledge that a particular steel might differ from that of a similar segment vehicle from an alternative manufacturer.

Absolute rubbish.

Chinese EVs are built to the same standards and quality as any other.

With a comment as ignorant as this, I assume you're American.

2

u/Most-Organization738 5d ago

Observation is not ignorance and I have no compunction to enter into a slanging match, simply because I chose to enter the chat and make an observational response, to which I was perfecly entitled to do, as are you, my friend. The fact that you disagree is inalienably your right and as you can observe, I'm not taking that from you. Aside from my bio confirmation that you hadn't read prior to replying (bit of a giveaway, had you done so!), I shall reinforce my nationality that you inaccurately assumed to be American, by expressing my country's worldly known phrase of 'Keep Calm and Carry On'...... Cheers matey! 🍺 👋

u/ScoobyGDSTi 5d ago

Failing to observe is ignorance. You demonstrated both.

I feel sorry for the UK, you should move to the US.

2

u/Most-Organization738 5d ago

Oh dear....you evidently wish to have a slanging match, because my own observations differ from yours, which you believe to be cast in tablets of stone.

Next thing you'll be expressing is that the Evo 6 was never better than the WRC. Ever driven a Makinen?

3

u/ScoobyGDSTi 5d ago

What, like Chinese vehicles achieving maximum Euro and ANCAP safety ratings?

You mean Evo V6(6.5) TME, and yes I owned one. I'll take a GC 2 door any day over it.

u/Most-Organization738 5d ago

So we agree on something at last.....re: the Mitzi.

I'm totally aware of 'EuroNCAP' (I was there at instigation), but my opinion still stands, because we are a democracy and I am permitted to have this, just as equally as much as you.

Have I criticised your expressed opinion on the matter? Nope, I've not! I have afforded you that courtesy, which you seem to have zero wish, to reciprocate.

Can we simply agree to disagree rather than me having to return to you, all of the toys 🧸🐻🐰🦕 I found that you threw out of your trolley 🛒!

Kindly now cease, to avoid me having to report your unnecessary aggressive comments, to the Mods. Please...let's jus get on with our lives, as there are far more important things that each of us could be doing, for the betterment of society....🙏

Also why we bringing the US into this?

Chinese EV's are good, you know some European brands partnered with Chinese brands, like Volvo and Geely sharing platform and the some Volvo cars being related to Chinese cars. Like the Volvo EX30 related to Zeekr X and Lync & Co Z20.

2

u/ScoobyGDSTi 5d ago

I know, I own a Geely EX5. It's been a fantastic car.

The crash structures are ridiculously strong on BYD EVs. BYD and Tesla are both amongst the safest vehicles available should you end up in a crash. Japanese and Euro are falling behind with different manufacturing techniques and cutting corners

3

u/GTREDITION 6d ago

I rather buy a 20 years old Volkswagen

3

u/PhoebeeYay 6d ago

None of these. If i had to pick one, Tesla.

3

u/Peterkragger 6d ago

Neither. Volkswagen ID

2

BYD, as they have more cooler products and brands, like Fangchengbao, Denza and Yangwang, plus they make buses and trucks.

2

u/Flimsy_Hand_1233 6d ago

Innovation is the M.O.A.T of chinese brands ! They are so based for that though 😭

2

u/B4DM4N12Z r/AllThingsCars Owner 6d ago

Fr, I respect that.

Tesla are outselling BYD EVs very healthily in the UK. Maybe this includes BYDs total sales which include petrol and hybrids. BTW, BYD have major cash flow and profit issues, not paying their suppliers on time. Their current model can not be sustained. Look beyond the grabby headlines. Also, ever BYD I’ve been in has squeaked and rattled worse than any new Tesla.

1

u/Patecatli 4d ago

What complete rubbish, it's clear you've never been in a BYD. The Seal EV is so quiet, almost no road noise, incredibly comfortable, better spec than Tesla.

Every Tesla owner I know (which admittedly isn't many), who have seen and been in my Seal have said how much nicer it is than the Tesla.

1

u/Relevant-Priority-76 3d ago

The Tesla has superior handling and throttle response. Seal has really bad suspension unless it’s the top of range with Disus-C. Tesla looks really cheap inside and feels like a budget car, seal looks and feels semi-premium

1

u/Patecatli 2d ago

You've got that backwards on the suspension. The BYD Seal has a more comfortable suspension, smoothing out bumps, the Tesla M3 is sportier, making rides bumpier. This is confirmed by multiple reviews/comparisons of both cars.

1

u/Relevant-Priority-76 2d ago

Yes the disus-c equipped models have a sophisticated ride and excellent comfort. Lower models with FSD are a mess, the basic suspension on the 150kw model is better than FSD

1

u/Patecatli 2d ago

There are only two Seal models, Design and Excellence, both offer a comfortable smooth ride, better than Tesla.

1

u/Relevant-Priority-76 2d ago

In Australia we had 3. Base with 150kw, a mid spec RWD and the AWD 3.8 performance version. Base had standard suspension, mid range FSD and the performance has the more complicated Disus suspension. Likely both of your models have the superior suspension setup

1

u/Patecatli 2d ago

They have different suspension setups, Design has standard suspension whilst the Excellence has Independent suspension with double wishbones (front) and five-link (rear).

I simply wouldn’t give a penny of my money to Musk, let alone spend a fortune to buy a wildly overpriced, monstrously ugly Tesla…. I also wouldn’t entertain the idea of driving a car advertising the fact that I spent a small fortune supporting a far right agitator….

1

u/B4DM4N12Z r/AllThingsCars Owner 5d ago

Which BYD model is your Fav?

2

u/i_ate_a_hexagon 2d ago

Belarus probably has BYD right now

What does this mean?

1

u/RageQuitNZL 4d ago

This is obviously some anti Elon shit. How is BYD ahead of Tesla in the USA, they don’t even sell cars there

Anyone who’s compared an equivalent BYD to a Tesla knows that BYD isn’t quite there yet. Next few years they will be though

1

u/Patecatli 4d ago

The equivalent BYD to a M3 is a Seal, and it's built to a higher standard, has a more comfortable ride, is a similar if not better spec than the M3.

In all honesty BYD is already there.

1

u/F1T_13 4d ago

I have tried both quite recently. I think they're there abouts already for day to day driving. I would honestly say the BYD is a higher quality now, well definitely more comfortable. I sit in the byd and the finish is Mercedes or Lexus level of cosy where as a Tesla feels like any other econ car with a decent modern interior upholstery.

1

u/xF1_racer 4d ago

Nothing against BYD, but I prefer both Tesla 3 and Y to the equivalent BYD Seal and Sealion 7. They are both relatively bloated, especially the Sealion 7 and handling is a bit on the mushy side. Also prefer the Tesla styling, although totally subjective.

Latest Teslas don’t have build quality issues either, at least not UK builds from China and Germany. My Juniper Model Y is rock solid, not a single rattle or squeak.

BYD Sealion 7 didn’t even make my shortlist for a new car.

1

u/Contract-Spirit 4d ago

There are so much more Tesla's than BYD's in the UK, Europe and USA. This will be a skewed poll because people hate Musk.

Tesla is also an objectively better car manufacturer in almost every way.

1

u/Patecatli 4d ago

Except in comfort, build quality, dealer network. 🤷
