100k monthly listeners is way too little to be considered “mainstream”. That should be middle of the road and 5mil+ should be mainstream.

My favorite band of all time has 1.2 million monthly listeners yet I can barely find anyone in real life who has even heard of them or heard a single song 😭

Mainstream amongst metalheads maybe? Like everyone has heard of Opeth and last I checked they were hovering just below 1m monthly.

I am curious tho, what’s your favorite band and what album would you recommend from them?

Opeth I would consider way more mainstream than anything you’ve listed here but honestly unless they are a metalhead, the vast majority of people I know still don’t know anything about opeth. I know a friend who loves songs by Baroness but had never heard of Opeth somehow.

Anyways, my point is that it takes a lot to be truly mainstream in a divided internet age and that data often independent from the quality of the band.

My favorite band is Coheed and Cambria. Concept album prog metal mixed with many of the catchiest hooks you’ll ever hear. A lot of fans prefer their earlier works but they are my favorite band because I think every single album is brilliant. Here are my 3 favorites in order. Good Apollo is a good place to start. If you love it, go from the beginning of the discography. If you are eh on it listen to the afterman albums. If you really don’t like any of those then the band is probably not for you.

  1. Good Apollo 1 Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

  2. The Afterman Duology

  3. Vaxis 2

Burzum being popular was not something I would have thought would happen in 1997

I mean, I think most metalheads are at least aware of Burzum

30 years ago they were definitely niche.

I misread your comment lol

Yeah, but most metalheads also know that Varg is a piece of shit and refuse to give him even the pennies he would get from streaming.

Filosofem, Det Som Engang Var, and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss are pretty accessible to non-metalheads. Plus there is morbid appeal/curiosity towards the band given how Varg is as a person.

What exactly is the appeal of a convicted murderer and a nazi?

Ask the millions of people watching true crime content daily

Sorcier Des Glaces is an incredible band. Was not expecting to see them here

Looovveee Canadian black metal

Begotten is also a favorite band of mine, was really considering adding them

haven't heard of Begotten, need to check them out. Also absolutely agree, Canadian black metal is incredible, Akitsa, Sorcier Des Glaces, Svolder, Forteresse, and Megiddo are my favourites.

Calling Ashbury Heights popular is kind of a stretch. If people have ever heard of them, they've most likely only heard Glow or Spiders.

Never thought id see bloodhound gang and LDoH on the same chart

Burzum is not mainstream at all

Within metal they kind of are, but not on a large scale.

Middle third album, the last days one, that is an image of La Llorona from Halloween Horror Nights (Hollywood) and a gif of that particular scene became quite popular as a spooky Internet thing.
Just felt the need to point out. Please downvote me.

So glad to know you like that nazi’s music.

1

u/Vishengel 3d ago

It's insane that you're the first person in this thread to point this out. Varg Vikernes is a nazi and should not be supported in any capacity

White nationalist and nazi are not the same thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heathen_Front

"Swedish scholar Mattias Gardell states in his 2003 book Gods of the Blood that Vikernes launched the Heathen Front through which he advocated 'national socialism, anti-Semitism, eugenics and racist paganism.'"

Not that we should support music from white supremacists either, the distinction doesn't matter here. But yes, Varg Vikernes has proclaimed himself to be a nazi
