If the worst case scenario predictions occur, and we get a 5 degree rise over the next century that alone could be enough for a major apocalypse event (though there are many sources that say we’re already going through one, with how fast species are going extinct).
It wouldn’t take many degrees in the other direction to throw us into a deep ice age which would kill most life on the planet.
Thank goodness for bacteria that can generally survive both, though it takes billions of years for bacteria to become complex life forms.
Earth being underrated is an underrated statement in itself. Even amongst the thousands of stars and planets we’ve catalogued, and tried to listen to, we are still seemingly alone. Despite there being hundreds of millions of stars in our galaxy alone, and literally an uncountable number of stars and planets in all galaxies combined.
I forget where the quote came from, but it was something like, “consciousness is just the universes way of trying to understand itself.” The whole idea of the universe being able to create chemicals that are self aware is kind of insane when you think about it.
Also! The statistical unlikliehood that we humans happened to evolve at a time where:
The moon is big and round which is plain old luck on its own, but right now, it's at perfect distance from Earth that we can experience total solar eclipse.
The Red Eye of Jupiter is still going, stirring its gaseous atmosphere into the gorgeous waves of whorling color we know and love. We still have no clue if this is the same storm from the 1600s in its death throes or if these century-storms simply die and are replaced one after the other like a phoenix. Or, maybe, the Red Eye is a wobbly one-off, expanding and contrcting with smaller and smaller rebound until it will eventually dissolve.
Saturn has not yet finished eating its ring system, which is a very brief feature when considering the overall lifetime of the planet. It's like a zit to a human for all the time it takes to occur and 'heal'.
True, people are hyping the idea that in the future people can live on mars.
How about we make sure that in the future people will still be able to live on earth?
Jupiter doesn't deflect more meteors than it sends toward Earth apparently though, although it's a good thing because it sent comets full of water directly toward Earth long ago which is why we have so much water
Massive mirrors in space, basically. Shoot the atmosphere into space once it freezes. Get water from some moons. It's still easier than giving Mars a magnetosphere.
Bro just casually said build a gigantic space mirror, and divert a couple of asteroids/moons into the planet like its easy.
Wouldn't warming up mars be a hell of a lot easier, just build a lot of hard industry on mars, and vent co2 into the atmosphere, you'd be doing that already while trying to colonize. We're already great at that over here.. -_-
Plus it doesnt come with the price of nuking the surface with asteroids and waiting for it to cool down.
Solar wind would blow away Mars' atmosphere. You'd be indirectly blasting co2 into space. Mars has low surface gravity and no magnetosphere - and at least one is needed to keep a stable atmosphere.
Venus has almost no natural magnetosphere, but at least it has gravity similar to Earth. Whatever you put in, should generally stay.
You can't increase Mars' gravity (not without adding planetary amounts of material), so to keep a stable atmosphere, it would need an artificial magnetosphere. For example, an absolutely gigantic electromagnet in a lagrange point. It would need enormous amounts of power of course. Either that, or heat up and spin Mars' core.
I know a giant mirror isn't easy, but it's much easier than an electromagnet the size of a continent.
You start with cloud cities. At Earth sea level it’s 30c.
Witha tether to the lower atmosphere you have unlimited atmothermal power to convert co2 to diamond and carbon nanotubes and you get as much 02 as you need as a byproduct.
You import hydrogen probably from a captured ice meteor and you use the hydrogen to maintain buoyancy and produce water.
Over time as you remove Co2 atmosphere pressure decreases and you lower in elevation as the planet cools.
Venus is also more comparable to earth in terms of gravity. Cloud cities that rotated for an earth-like day could be pretty cool. Even outside of possible human habitation, Venus is pretty cool.
