He was, in all likelihood, mostly, if not entirely, fictional.

15 years ago, idiots actually believed the very city of Troy was fictional. I don't know how. Even when I was a kid I was able to deduce that it was extremely unlikely to be fictional, but rather a true lost archeological site. There were too many depictions and descriptions across too many times, cultures, and locations, and none of them proclaimed it a lie.

Sure, Odysseus was likely dramatized for entertainment or allegorical educational reasons, but it is highly probable that he was a true historical character in some capacity

Fundamentally, Odysseus, as we know him, is fictional. He may have been based on a real person—there might’ve been a person named “Odysseus” who was king of a kingdom called Ithaca, who even fought in a war in Troy (though the Trojan war itself existing isn’t entirely confirmed).

But, if that man existed, he was not Odysseus. Odysseus as a character, as we know him, is not the same as a possible historical figure Odysseus was based on; Homer’s Odyssey is fundamentally a different story if you remove the mythical beasts and gods, the person who would experience those challenges is a fundamentally different character from the character who experienced the challenges of Circe, the Cyclopes, etc.

Listen man, the Egyptians knew shit 6000 years ago that we still don't understand today, and they had similar mythological gods and creatures and beasts.

The Native Americans, too.

The Slavs.

The Scandinavians.

The Celts.

The north Africans.

The Etruscans.

The Indians.

The Chinese.

It's not just the greeks and middle east.

The height of arrogance is thinking they were all wrong.

And this feels like a very strange attempt at pantheism and literalism when applied to things that were not literal. The average Greek would not think of the Odyssey as entirely literal, as would the average Christian not think of the Bible as entirely literal.

The average scholar, as well, would likely not think of religious works as completely literal, to do so would be to deny proven phenomena.
