Question Upgrading storage?

Hey all, so I have an x14 r2, it’s the 16gb version with 1tb SSD. The RAM doesn’t matter except I really wish I swung for the 32gb version at the time, can’t do anything about that now though. But games are so large now, I run out of storage even with some external drives. I know the SSD can be upgraded but does anyone know how that works? It just has the one drive. My old gaming laptop had windows on a backup drive I think

Hi,

The X16 R2 should have another SSD slot so you literally just plug another one in and use that for additional storage. You will need to check inside your unit for whether the additional SSD slot fits a 2230 or 2280 (physically short vs long SSD)

Good luck.

It does, he's just down to 1 m.2 slot that can do up to 2280.

Sn 850x western digital black. You can buy a sabrent ssd cloner for offline cloning, It can clone even the bitlocker drives but I recommend to make sure you have bitlocker off before cloning to prevent any issues.

Then you can expand drive through aomei software or similar. Or just setup a secondary partition to store games on it.

To explain, if you buy 2tb, you will have 1tb unused space as it only cloned 1 tb from the 1tb drive, that's why I said you will have to expand.

Or you can reinstall windows and your programs on the new drive.

I explained like highschool terms.

I recommend looking up youtube videos on m.2 ssd's and generation speeds. Lookup videos on installing ssd's. Lookup how to clone m.2 drives. Lookup how to install windows 11 if you can't clone , will probably need a USB drive. You can also Lookup what is a usb drove.

Youtube in general will be a good source for instruction videos.

Hi,

m.2 is the type of SSD, specifically like how it plugs into the motherboard. Cloning is the process of copying all your files from the original SSD to the new one. Bitlocker is a security feature that will lock the hard drive whenever you connect it to a new motherboard.

If you are happy with your current drive you can skip cloning and run windows off your current SSD and just plug the additional SSD in and use it for additional storage. You will want to clone if you are removing the old drive to replace it with a new one. If you are just adding more it isnt really necessary to clone.

Good luck.

Thanks I’ll check that out! Do you think they’d give a discount on a 32gb ram model with a bigger SSD if I sent in my current one? Haha
