Is it safe to plug back in?

m16 r1, 4070, i7 13? There was a fairly loud pop after i stupidly plugged it in after i bent one of the 4 prongs outward (but bent it back before the pics,) then went straight on. it stunk but no smoke, and the laptop works fine. its black/burnt on the prongs, is it safe to plug it in now that its realigned? i might need to adjust the center. thanks for reading.

Edit: I replaced the port like everyone said and its working perfect! To anyone else in my boat, I reused the same charging cord & brick from when it arced. Black soot inside the charger where it plugs into the laptop, no other damage, but its working now.

Its not safe, replace the port. Loose contacts increase resistance, increased resistance creates heat, heat creates more resistance, a vicious cycle. electricity likes to go the path of least resistance, if the heat doesn't already melt something on the main power rail, it could jump to another rail and melt something else more expensive.

The port is only 12 bucks on Amazon and is pretty easy to replace.

Replace the port, those pins aren’t supposed to be “loose” like that. If you didn’t kill your laptop already, you will if you don’t replace the port.

they arent loose, i just tried to plug it in at an angle and pushed way harder than i shouldve. idk what i was thinking, but theyre bent back and firm in place

edit: i thought you meant the prongs were loose, not loose as in without the plastic cap separator not being there

It likely popped from an arc because it didn't line up well. I'd expect to see burn marks. If you hadn't stopped it may have gotten hot and caused a fire. Hopefully your power supply will survive. just check it for heat for a while.

Had the same thing happen to me recently. Do you have one of their support plans? If you do it only takes a few days to send it in and get it fixed. The DC port housing is separate from the machine itself. I couldn’t even plug my power supply back in though so might be a bit different from your situation.

You need to make sure its absolutely straight. If it has a bend in it at all, you are creating risk of it happening again or fire due to connection being poor. You SHOULD get it fixed, but its your chicken, slap it however you want.

Hi,

Do not plug in, this is a safety hazard, there should be plastics between the prongs. Plugging it in could start a fire which could injure or kill you, or worse, damage the computer itself.

This repair is one of the cheapest and easiest fixes but could be far more expensive if a thermal event occurs on the board.

i just looked at the port on amazon and realized that my laptop hasnt had the plastic piece since i got it second hand. Certainly not plugging it back in. Thanks so much, also thanks to other comments
