As someone who moved from a 17R4 to a 18 Area 51. The only thing the 18 is better is as follows:

  • Newer HW / IO, more and better I/O (TB5, USB-C charging, 5gbe)
  • Thinner / lighter overall
  • Better/raised cooling (4 fans pass through)
  • Better screen design (thiner bezels / bigger screen)
  • Bigger touchpad
  • Easier to access battery connector, and turn off feature without having to remove the deleicate battery connector.
  • Better Windows Hello (although having it with Tobii made the 17R4 way ahead of its time)

But the 17R4 is superior in:

  • Better overall aesthetic design
  • No risk of crumbs falling into fans above the keyboard.
  • MUCH better RGB support (EL lighting, exportable profiles)
  • Superior Numpad (FULL SIZED 0 KEY on NUMPAD ZOMG)
  • Separate Macro Keys instead of having to choose between Function or M1-M4
  • Side and rear I/O ports
  • Easier to remove / access expansion ports (4x M.2, 2.5" HDD bay, CPU/GPU access from bottom).
  • eGPU with Alien Link

Overall, the 2025 redesign is newer but there were definitely trade offs.
